Activision Spiderman Mysterios Menace Gameboy Advance Action Review

Activision Spiderman Mysterios Menace

Description
You don't just play it ...you live it. Now, for the very first time you can be Spider-Man on Game Boy Advance as you take on super-villain Mysterio and his powerful band of thugs. Mysterio is in the Big Apple, turning the city into a giant movie set and playing evil tricks upon your mind in an effort to defeat you for good. But, you have a few tricks of your own: namely, special attacks, vital power-ups and special suits that protect you from harm and regenerate your health. Mysterio is the master of illusion, and will use his special effects to make everyday objects your worst enemies. But, he's forgotten one thing: You're a spider who refuses to lose.

Summary:
This game is an overall great game ,featuring everyones favorite web-slinger, with only a few MINOR flaws. I put minor in caps because most of these flaws are so miniscule that they really don't matter to your average gamer. For instance it's extremely short(7levels).

The game takes place in,where else but, New York as Spidey tries to unravel a crime spree. The story is told in comic-like scenes before during and after levels.

This is a must have for Spidey fans of all ages. I also suggest this for those who are just looking for a great game.

P.S. Spidey fans: Let Spidey stand completely still during play and watch him. Tust me you'll get a kick out of at least one of the things he does.

Summary:
Crime is rampant in New York. You put on the red-blue suit of everyone's favorite webslinger to restore order and peace in this platform action game.
The story behind this game is delivered to us in commic like screens, which really duplicates the atmosphere of the commics.
The game itself allows you to cling to walls and ceilings, dropping down on enemies, shoot webbing and (best of all imho), websling through the level. It succeeds fairly well in recreating the feeling of being a human spider.
Replay value is rather low. Even though there are some hidden powerups to recover, I did not feel tempted to go all out to find them.
Overall, a game highly recommended for spidey fans that will also appeal to other players.

Summary:
Back in the mid 80's, Sega released a four-player side-scrolling sci-fi platformer called Quartet. They later released a not very faithful but quite entertaining translation for the Sega Master System. It was an old-style arcade setup; five lives, start from the beginning every time. I played the heck out of it. Even after I could beat it with one hand tied behind my back, knew where all the hidden goodies were, etc. If I remember right, playing it through was about a twenty minute affair.

Why am I telling you all this? To illustrate how far we've come in our expectations from platformers. Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace is short. As in, don't be surprised to get through it the first day you have it. I did. It took about three hours. Long by the standards of Quartet (or Super Mario Bros., if you were of the Nintendo persuasion back then), short by the standards of current games designed to be played once over a week or a month or two or whatever your free time allows. I want to put that up front, because you'll need to find replay value in this game because it has minimal one-play value.

Personally, I hope I can find it, because the rest of the game is wonderful. The controls feel so good, and it is so easy to get Spider-Man to do what you want. And he looks so good when he's doing it. "Graceful" isn't a word you often associate with button-masher video games, but it's one that leaps to mind here. Spidey dances around the game world like Fred Astaire, and when the game design seems to substitute more mindless drone baddies for anything that requires any more creative strategy, you're inclined to forgive it, because said baddies aren't there to be serious obstacles, they're there to showcase the agility and ability of your half-inch tall superhero in red and blue.

And that's what the game hangs its hat on. The rest is fairly standard. Action takes place in factories, piers, nightclubs, amusement parks, etc. Boss at the end of every level (there are seven). The plot? I don't even remember. Something about strange things happening around NYC, and Mysterio's behind it. Various powerups. Hidden treasure stashes. It's all here, and while it lasts, you won't be disappointed.
