from Wal-Mart Summary: Twelve years ago a new developer was born from the banding together of disgruntled programmers that were sick of making endless sequels for the major game companies. This developer was Treasure, a name that would become synonymous with "Hardcore Gaming" in the years to come and their first game was Gunstar Heroes on the Sega Genesis.
Gun Star heroes itself became a legend. It pushed the Genesis to levels that no one imagined possible, competing with the Super Nintendo and their new FX Chip that seemed poised to clinch the competition between the two gaming super powers. The gameplay was fluid, frantic, full of explosions, had a deep story told with few words (Deep for that era outside of RPG's and maybe games like Wing Commander) and it had an odd but refreshing sense of humor to top it all off. It was the perfect blend of action and character with memorable bosses and incredible weapons.
Unfortunately... Gunstar Heroes came and went with nothing more than a faint whisper to be worshipped forever in the private collections of only the most hardcore of gamers.
Finally, the legend has returned.
Though Treasure seemed to have a policy in which they would never make a sequel, which is very admirable and would force them to make original games, they broke this silent pact by creating Guardian Heroes for the GBA, then finally it happened. "Gunstar Super Heroes." It was a dream come true.
The Story takes place some time after the original with a new set of heroes and villains that are practically identical to their older counterparts (Except for Red who is now a woman but we won't get into that... in the Japanese her gender is ambigious but I think SOA made the right choice by just picking a gender.) The plot however remains mostly the same, get the four gems and stop the enemy from using them to summon Golden Silver, The Great Destructor, The God of Ruin.
Does this sequel stack up to the original classic of classics? Yes and no. Report this review >>
