from Target Summary: This is my fourth pinball game for the GBA. I have Hardcore Pinball, Pinball of the Dead, Muppet Pinball Mayhem, and Sonic Pinball Party. They all have their pluses and minuses, but Sonic Pinball Party is the best of the lot, hands down.
It has the best graphics, the best physics, the best audio, the best designed tables, and best of all, the best gameplay. Plus, the minigames are integrated into the rest of the package. This title above all the others keeps me playing for hours.
Sonic Pinball Party can be difficult to find. Initially, Sega, through some marketing ploy, decided to release this game through Target stores only. This was in early 2003, and Target is where I bought it back then. I have seen it in other stores in the last couple of months, so perhaps the exclusive lock Target had is over.
Sega and Sonic Team spared no effort in the creation of this title. This is as well polished a game presentation as you will ever see on the GBA. Like most pinball games for the GBA, this one is themed, and the theme here is Sega/Sonic Team characters and games.
There are three basic table themes, and they are Sonic, Nights, and Samba de Amigo. However, these are the basic tables. As you boost your score, these tables will morph into related characters, such as Knuckles, the Eggman, and so on. Not only do the graphics change, but the table gameplay mechanics can change too. The aforementioned order of tables is also the difficulty level, with the Sonic tables being the easiest, the Nights tables being of medium difficulty, and the Samba de Amigo family of tables being the hardest. You'll have to work hard to play the alternate tables, and they are not permanently unlocked (at least, not yet) so you have to get a high score to play them.
The Pinball Party aspect of gameplay comes from the fact that there are several minigames that can be transferred, via a link cable, to up to four GBAs for multiplayer action. I've not done this, so I'll stick to the single player games for this review.
In addition to the pinball games, there are several minigames that are all very well designed and a lot of fun to play. During the Pinball games, you can open different modes such as Rings and Blue Chips. The rings and chips you collect are used in the mini games Tiny Chao Garden and Casinopolis. Plus, Tiny Chao Garden has a couple of very cool mini games within it, so you have, in effect, minigames within minigames.
This game rocks. If you like pinball, get it, post haste. It's the best. You will not be sorry. Report this review >>
