from Circuit City Summary: IGN gave this game a 4 out of a possible 10, and said lots of unkind things about it. Now, having spent more than twenty hours with it, I can tell you that IGN's reviewer either did not spend enough time with Tetris Worlds GC, or ate some lead-based paint when he was a child.
Either way, he is just plain wrong, as Tetris Worlds GC is an excellent build of an old classic, and has some unique and new elements as well. This Tetris Worlds is not a straight port of the PS2 version, either, as it has graphical and gameplay aspects that are Gamecube specific.
Because of the IGN review, and because there were no reviews here at VGR, I almost did not buy this game. But I've had Tetris Worlds GBA for some time now, and IGN slammed it also, so I decided to rent the GC version. The next day I bought it.
Tetris Worlds GC features two basic modes of Tetris gameplay with six Tetris variants in each. It has a learning mode for newbies, saves your progress as well as your stats, and supports up to four players, with handicapping available for each one to offset an experienced player's advantage.
If you love Tetris, you'd be hard pressed to find a more enjoyable Tetris game on any platform. I've had many different Tetris games over the years starting with the Amiga in the late 80s, and this one is simply the best. And if you have a Wavebird, then you are in for a real experience, because being untethered while playing will improve your game.
The Tetris variants presented here are not just fluff, but are deep changes to Tetris that will take a while to master. Some are familiar, but a few are new with Tetris Worlds. All are well done.
Tetris Worlds GC sees both memory card slots (yay!) and has lots of options regarding play difficulty, audio, and more.
