Summary: Of all the sims ever made, the Flanker Series has to be my favourite. In this world gone crazy, its actually possible to buy high-end sims like this as budget releases now.. merely because they weren't developed in the US by a corporation with massive marketing clout.
Whilst Flanker 2.0, out of the box is a good buy, the free 2.5 update is an absolute must. It improves on the original with better graphics, sound and adds an extra plane to fly. Now tell me.. how many Microsoft flight sims do you know where you get an extra plane in a free update?
For those not in the know.. the Flanker games are essentially 'study sims' of the popular 'Flanker' jet combat aircraft. A big part of the attraction with these games comes from the plane itself.. when it was first revealed to the public towards the end of the cold war, it caused shock waves amongst aviation enthusiasts throughout the world. The story of the first demonstration of the Flankers capabilities at a western airshow is the stuff of legend: it completely stole the show with its increadible aerobatic capabilities, not to mention its increadibly good looks for a Russian built machine.
With the 2.5 upgrade, you also get to fly the Mig 29K, another world class USSR built plane of phenomenal interest to most western combat aviation enthusiasts.
The makers of Flanker are about to a new simulator entitled 'Lock On - Modern Air Combat' in a few months. Lock-On is a true sequel to Flanker 2.5 (Although they've added a flyable F15 and A10 so the overtly patriotic can buy without fear of having to play the 'bad guys'), so if your at all interested in that, you should definately check this out as the perfect way to hone those Flanking skills!
