Summary: Sim City 2000 is way ahead of it's time. This game has got killer graphics(for 1994), great music, hours and hours of gameplay, and loads of fun. I've had this game since 95 or 96, and I still play it today. Maxis is defenitely a top notch company.
Summary: This ranks as one of amy all time favorite games. It was the very first game I ever bought and 6 years later I still play it,even though I now have SC3000. Sim City is a fantastic game. You are in charge of a city and you can decide how you want to build it.Do you want a small town with tiny neighborhoods?do you want a sprawling metropolis? It's your choice with this game. There are also scenarios you can play, designed to test your prowess as mayor. Some of them are quite difficult,I reccommmend Dullsville as your first scenario. When you first start playing this game, make sure you start a mass transit system.Railroads are great but can get expensive,so you might want to try bus stations-they are cheap and effective.I really love this game-it is a well loved classic and it deserves it's fame. You might have some trouble finding it but when you do it should be fairly cheap,so buy it!You won't be dissappointed!
Summary: In the dictionary I looked up the meaning of the word 'game'. This is what the dictionary said: 'a form of sport or amusement, ecspecially one with rules'. So, I then looked up the word 'amusement'. It said 'the state of being amused'. Amuse meaning: 'to cause to smile or laugh' or 'to make time pass pleasantly'. In conclusion of this research then, a game's goal should be to make time pass pleasantly.
However, Simcity 2000, in my opinion, does not make my time pass relatively pleasantly. Yes, it is different than all these shoot'em games with violence and gore. But it just seems so irky pirky pickled pie meaningless. What is the whole point of building a polluted, overpopulated city? What is the point of trying to keep your budget up and to keep the citizens happy? What is the point of playing a game which has no way of winning it? Sure, it may pass the time pleasantly for some people but not for me. Here is why:
Summary: Sim City 2000 has been around for a long time now, and I have had the game for around 6 years. I now have the Special Edition which comes with the game, the urban renewals kit, and more scenarios. But to get on with this review....
Gameplay (8/10) Steep learning curve. It will take a while to learn how to play this one. There are so many options, and tools and it is just a bit too overwhelming at first. It took me around a month before I could play this really well. I remember spending 11 hours straight, just on one city, and I got the population to 1000. Man I was so happy. Now, I could get the population to 1000 in a few minutes. There is a map editor which lets you create your landscape where your city will be. This allows you to make the style of city you want. Whether it be a chain of small islands, a large mountain range, or a boring piece of flat land. It lets you place trees and water. Raise and lower the water level, and terrain. You can make nearly any landscape you want.
Then, it comes to building a city. You will get to choose a year (1900, 1950, 2000, 2050). The amount of things you are allowed to build is different according to the year you choose. For example, you wont be getting a Microwave Power Plant in 1900. The first thing is to give the city a name. Be creative. Once that is done, you will get a newspaper. There are some funny articles to read on the newspaper. When starting a city, you will get to place roads, Power Stations, and different zoning for land (Residential, Commercial, Industrial). Everything costs money, so you have to watch your budget. At the end of the year, the budget screen will come up. This lets you change taxes on things, and people give advice on how to make your city better.
When you zone the land, buildings will randomly pop up (if you gave them a road and power). At first, a building will be under construction, and then will grow up. You can place amusement places, like parks, stadiums and zoos. The cool thing about stadiums is, that you can name the sport and the team name. Zoo's have a Llama count. You can have Marina's which lets boats out onto the water. You can have a rail system with trains going around the city.
Water system is an upgrade from the original SimCity. Now, you have to worry about pipes and water. This part can be a real pain in the.. er you know. You'll soon dread the message "Water Shortage Reported." as it means you need to go around building more pumps. It is just never enough, is it. With all that said, this game is really fun, only spoiled by a few little things.
Sound (7/10) The music is pretty shoddy, it mainly consists of "beeps" and "bops". The tunes that they make are quite good though, but they are just Midi files which you can play outside the game. The music is more refined in the Special Edition though. I'd say while the tunes are not the best quality, they are quite good tunes and fit in well with the mood of the game. The mood of the game, if you hadn't already guessed, is hectic, fast and noisy, just like a real city.
The sound effects are Wav files and sound a lot better, because most of them contain some voice. While you may get sick of "Sim Copter 1, Reporting heavy traffic" and the explosions that happen, they are really well constructed. When I am trying to place Water Pumps around, and I accidentally place one over an existing one, I get an annoying "BUZZ" sound. Little things like this make it annoying. So Overall, the sound in this game is average.
Graphics (9/10) Its amazing how much detail the city will hold when it takes up the whole screen. Buildings lights flash on and off, and boats float through the water, plains flying over the city, the fires.. uh, crud, not another fire!. The little things in this game are very detailed. Like water, trees and buildings. The cars though, are just little blue spots that appear and disappear, they look quite stupid. Nice graphics.
Lasting Appeal (10½/10) When I have been playing this game continually for around 6 years, and still show no signs of getting sick of it. I'd say the Lasting Appeal of this game is above excellent. You can play the scenario's or make your own city from a landscape that you designed yourself. Make a small chain of islands, a rugged mountain range, a flat land with a river running through it, just anything that your imagination can come up with. As you play more, you will get better at it, and people will watch in amazement as you construct a city of 1 Million people in a mere half hour. Trust me, it can be done.
Good Points - It is endless - Last you a life time - It is so cheap now - Detailed graphics
Bad Points - Hard to learn how to play - Music is a little shabby
Overall 8.5/10 This is the master of all simulation games, if you dont have this classic by now, you really should get it.

Summary: This Game is very good. If you really like architecture and want to build a city from scratch just for kicks, then this game is for you. What I like most about this game is the statistics and tips. The whole object is to keep you citizens happy. To do that you need to provide saftey (fire departments, police stations etc.), services 9 water, electric etc.), and amusment (sports stadiums, Zoo etc.) Sim City 200 is a real thinking game where you have to put your self in the peoples shoes and ask yourself what would you want if you were a citizen.
