Xicat Ballistics Racing Review

Xicat Ballistics

Description
Ballistics takes place during mans next century. Technology and increasing demand for hazardous entertainment has born a new form of racing. The Ballistics pilots run their hover bikes on magnetic fields inside a track that allows full 360º movement. The races take place in many different settings; all with their own unique design and environment - all shaped to breed the speed.

Price Paid:  $5.00 from Electronics Boutique

Summary:
You pilot a sort of meglev/jet/speeder-bike inside of a twisting tunnel full of obstacles, and must race to beat the 7 other pilots.

Memorization of courses and/or great reflexes are the key to winning -- the game gets so fast that you literally cannot blink for fear of losing grip on the track or hitting an obstacle.

I've had the "experience" of playing the game for so long in one sitting that when I close my eyes I can still see the red cross obstacles screaming toward me. (pretty messed up, agreed?)

There are 7 courses, all of which have different styles.

Of all racing games I have played, this is the most no-nonsense "arcade" of the bunch (second place goes to Whiplash AKA Fatal Racing). I like the fact that I can jump in, race a couple of tracks and leave anytime very quickly.

I haven't been able to try out multiplayer because everyone that watched me play said "how can you possibly control something that fast??!" or "you can't even tell which way is up!"

Having played the Descent series, I can say that your brain decides on which way is down arbitrarily in those circumstances.

Summary:
Ballistics is all about speed. In fact it is and probably will be the fastest arcade racing game ever. That's no exaggeration. It happend that people left my room because it "hurt their eyes"!

It's hard to make a general recommendation about a game that is so extreme. If you are looking for the ultimate speed experience Ballistics rocks. If not you may find it rather bizar or pointless.

I suggest that you test the demo for yourself: www.grin.se/ballistics/
Even if you don't like it, it is an experience you should have made once. Believe me, it will be much, much faster than you thought!
