Summary:
This is an excellent RPG that boasts some the of best gameplay and one of the greatest stories of any RPGs I've played. The puzzles and riddles that are so abundant in the game are both challenging, and logical, and add a lot to the game play. While the graphics are far from outstanding, they are flawless in the system. You certainly won't be amazed, but you won't find any problems outside of the fact that they are so simple. The developers basically focused purely on gameplay and made sound and graphics engines that work with the game.

Summary:
This game is not for the instant-gratification gamer.

Let's get that out of the way right at the start, because it is probably the most important part of any review of this game. If you are looking for fancy flashy graphics and leaping right into insanely-cool action scenes, you have the wrong game. Dragon Warrior 7 is not for you.

If, however, you care more about story and gamimg than being wowwed by ingenious graphics, consider Dragon Warrior 7. It just might be what you are looking for.

It should be clear already which school of thought I subscribe to. Graphics are ok but they take a back seat to the actual *game*, as far as I am concerned. But that's just me (even though *I* am right!). Other people disagree with me, and that is their right. With that in mind, I will strive to be unbiased.

Dragon Warrior 7 (henceforth DW7) is the latest in the long-running Japanese Dragon Quest RPG series (when first brought to the U.S., it was found that "Dragon Quest" was already copyrighted, so the name was changed). Dragon Warrior 1 was arguablly the first console RPG ever made. In the 15+ years since then, the series has become the most popular video game series ever in Japan. In fact, it is so popular that Japan actually has a law requiring that new DW games be released on weekends or holidays, owing to the huge mobs of people who began cutting school or work to buy the game whenever a new installment came out.

Here in the U.S. the series has not done quite so well. Even so, it has earned a committed group of fans who swear by its old-school flavour.

The story of DW7 is quite typical of rpg-style games: small band of adventurers travel to save the world from evil. But the story is told in a novel way. You start out in a fishing village on a mid-sized island, believed to be the only land in the world. As far as anyone knows, the rest of the world is just empty ocean. But for a long time there have been rumors and clues that your homeland is not alone. Or rather, that it *shouldn't* be alone. When one of these clues leads you and your friends to a magic alter, you get pulled into a quest to restore the lost lands that have somehow been locked away.

Along the way you visit fifteen or twenty lands, each with its own particular crisis for you to resolve. Solving the problems of these islands causes them to be unlocked so that they reappear in the oceans around your home island. Each new island is a complete mini-story by itself, but as each is restored, the larger story slowly takes shape.

As said, this is a very novel way to tell a story. So novel, in fact, that I do not know of any other video game that does this. Perhaps the old NES Dragon Warrior 4 game would serve as an example, since it was a five-chapter game with the events of the first four chapters all tying together in the fifth chapter. But that game is more than 10 years old, which makes it a poor choice to use as an example in this day and age.

This unique method of story-telling will strongly appeal to some people, and strongly bore others. In order to get through this game, the gamer needs patience to slog through close to two dozen mini-stories. Some people will find this very rewarding, as each new story brings something new. Others will find this very tedious, feeling as though they are doing the same thing over and over.

The quality and depth of these mini-stories are quite amazing, considering that each one is just a tiny part of the whole game. Each is a heroic tale of love, hate, life, and sometimes death. Some stories are wrapped up with everyone living happily ever after. Some end quite badly, with heartbreak and dispair. Many are somewhere in between, with some people getting what they want and others being left by the wayside. It gives the story and game world a very realistic feel, because real life itself is often heart-breaking and "messy".

Of course, the quality of the stories do not change the fact that the player is basically doing the same thing over and over again. The question to ask yourself is: will great absorbing stories be enough reason to go through with that, or will performing the same actions become tedious despite the stories? For me, the stories were reason enough to keep playing for a very long time. Other people, however, clearly disagree, complaining that this game is boring and not worth the time.

Be aware of what kind of game you like before you invest your time and money in DW7. If you do not like RPGs, avoid this game at all costs. If you prefer Final Fantasy style RPGs, approach this game with caution. If you enjoyed the old Dragon Warrior games, definately get your hands on DW7.
