Summary: When I saw a magazine review for this game what first made me want this game was that it had over 80 endings. This was something very unique so I bought it. It also had many other unique qualities about it, able to choose which characters go on what party. Private actions, which were awesome, they affected the storyline and the ending you got. It just looked awesome compared to many other RPGs. Also, the battle system got me excited as well. One where you could walk around, completely real-time. So this RPG offered completely new things, lots of new things in a single game. I couldn't resist. I had to trust it would be a good game, especially because I hadn't played any other Enix games. I had no idea what their games were like.
So when I first played it, there was no way I couldn't like it. I already knew it would be an amazing game. In the first two hours I was enjoying myself. A couple of hours of playing this game gave me a new respect for the company Enix.
Summary: This is arguably the best RPG ever released. The plot is deep and interesting, the character development is fantastic, and the battle system breaks away from all the other RPG's I've ever seen. The only reason I think that people don't like it, is that they don't want something as deep as this game goes, they want an RPG that they can play here and there and not really feel for the characters or get into what was going on, I mean, I played for up to 10 hours at a time! Not even knowing how long I had been playing!
Summary: The first RPG I ever played was Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (which was actually pretty darn good, I might add), and ever since then I have been snatching up any and all RPGs I could afford to buy. From Final Fantasy to Ogre Battle (a strategy RPG) to Xenogears, I have seen a few varied styles of play, but most can be fit into the same mold without too much work.
That is where Star Ocean: The Second Story really stands out. It is far from your run-of-the-mill FF knockoff. It is actually the second installment in the Star Ocean series, but the first was never released on US shores.
SO2 is definitely a good change for avid RPG players. It has a different battle system, two different characters to follow, many more who can be recruited under the right circumstances, and, for the people who loved Chrono Trigger for its dozen or so endings, SO2 has 80 possible endings! Throw in an extensive skill system and you have a great little game to give you a break from gears and chocobos.
With a little work on what SO2 is now, the upcoming Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time could become one of the must-have RPGs for any gamers library.

Summary: Quite possibly the best game I own. I've had SO:2 for nearly three years and im still hooked. With 12 characters and over 80 possible endings, it is an adventure of patience, frustration and overall skill with a controller. For instance, in the three full years ive had Star Ocean: The Second Story I've only now beaten the hardest enemy in it(An evil angel names Iselia-Queen who has 3,300,000+ HP). And I plan on playing it for another three years, to get every ending in the game.
