Atlus Disgaea - Hour of Darkness Roleplaying Review

Atlus Disgaea - Hour of Darkness

Description
The Netherworld ? a realm darker than the deepest abyss, located far beneath where mortals tread. It is a cursed land where evil reigns and foul beings dwell. Nobody knows its whereabouts, but everybody fears its existence...The story takes place two years after the death of King Krichevskoy, the ruler of the Netherworld. His son Laharl awakens from a long sleep, unaware of his father's death. Meanwhile, scheming demons vie for supremacy over the Netherworld. With the help of his subordinate Etna and her underlings, the egocentric, self-absorbed Prince Laharl must fight to regain the throne and claim his birthright.

Summary:
When I first glanced over Disgaea in OPM, I was iffy about the whole thing, especially since Atlus was behind it. And I just got off yet another monthly FFTactics high, so I unwittingly cursed myself to having the bar raised on any strategy RPG.
Well, the bar just got raised a little higher, and I still beat myself up for having any doubts. Shame on me.
When I found out that you can harness an army of devil-penguins and then blow them to smithereens by literally tossing them across a field, my battles were like a twisted Animal Kingdom Gone Wild. But wait, what about dragons? Demons? Abominations? The ability to successfully destroy a hackjob Power Ranger reject?
Check. Smile.
An angelic assassin too nice for her own good? Plans within plans with a story so erratically laid out that any author would turn his or her head and cry at the whole mess of it all, and yet so charming and loveable that it has yet, in my opinion, met it's match in humor, irreverence, and coolness?
Check. Oh, happy day.
This game should appeal to any who has a taste for strategy warfare. With hundreds of characters to create and train, to sign up and evolve, and with hundreds upon hundreds of boards to come across, each with it's own twisted layout to tickle one's brain but doesn't snap it altogether, this game is both greatly acceptable in terms of learning and progressing, yet not so much that you can just breeze through. Some boards require a lot of thought to unravel, and the rewards are outstanding.
Especially if you pursue the Thief classes. No hints or anything, you know...wink wink, nudge nudge.
Buy this game, and your life will be consumed by innocent wickedness, contradictions set aside. You won't regret it.

Summary:
A couple of weeks ago, the latest issue of Game Informer arrived in my mailbox (free subscription, thanks GameStop! :D). In it, I read a glowing review about a strategy-RPG called Disgaea: Hour Of Darkness, which I hadn't heard even one word about, despite being an sRPG freak. "OK, this is intriguing," I thought, "An sRPG, but not by Sega, Konami, or Squaresoft... well, it's worth a look... after all, how many sRPGs make it to the USA any more?"

So, I got it. Then I played it. I think I can sum it up in two words.

Holy @#$%^!

I have to tell you, I don't even know where to begin lavishing praise first. Disgaea has so incredibly much to it that you'll sit in front of your TV with your jaw hanging. I'll try to break it down without writing a War And Peace-length review.

Summary:
To begin I'd like to start what a free breath of air this game is. The story is told from the bad guys side for the most part, or at least one of this games many bad guys, and there really is no good guy to be found. The "hero" is actually Laharyl the son of the Overlord of the Underworld. He awakens after a 2 year slumber to find his father is dead, and the kingdom being fought over by demons all over the land. This may sound dark but the game is actually very funny at times. The character interaction is excellent, and its worth the price of admission just to watch that. Theres also a lot of new here for the old Strategy RPG genre. This includes the combo system, promotions, mentors, and the item world. Every item has a rarity level, and can be levelled up by taking a trip into that item to rid it of demons that have infested the world inside of it. Once there you can retrieve special monsters and that add stats to your items that you can transfer from item to item. Cool huh? My advice to not wait for this game to go out of print, and become hard to find.
