Summary: I want to start this out by saying - I really like Grandia in general. However this isn't going to be a review from a happy person. But still, I bought Grandia Xtreme, unseen, untested, unreviewed, because Grandia II was one of my favourite games of all time. What a mistake. Unlike the format of the previous Grandia games, this one is a dungeon-crawler: that is, the storyline is more basic than most RPG's, and the heart of the game revolves around the dungeon experience. This intrigued me, because I'm often fond of dungeon-crawlers. The best that I can say for this game is that although other people might enjoy it - I suppose it could be considered solid enough in its own right - it seems a horrible thrown-together mess. The storyline is sketchy, there is no character development..... you will have 7 of your 8 playable characters in the first 2 hours of play, folks. I like the characters themselves, I suppose - they seem to have the essential Grandia-style design - but without any real background, or at times, even any meaningful place in the storyline, they arent very likable or personable. For you to invest time in a dungeon-crawler, or an RPG for that matter, you have to care about the characters and their motivation. It should matter to you whether they live or die.
Summary: Grandia is my all time favorite RPG. It had a charm and character development that was really rare for its time and is one of gaming's best adventures. Feena, Justin and Sue are some of the best characaters ever created. So I naturally had high hopes for the titles that followed it. I bought a Dreamcast for 2 RPGs, Skies of Arcadia and Grandia 2. The second in the series improved the graphics by 1000X and tweaked an already perfect battle system, but I found the characters and the story lacking, but a good game nonetheless. I was excited about this Grandia, but the more I heard about it, the more leary I grew of it. When I first played it, I found Grandia Extreme very disappointing, as I judged it on its predecessors. To be honest I don't think it lives up to the past titles, especially the first one, and I am still looking forward to another Grandia that returns to its roots. But, Grandia Extreme is still a very good game, with even more tweaks to what I still think is the best battle system in an RPG, period.
Summary: Over all I thought this game was one of the best RPG's on the market, even compairable to the Final Fantasy series. It's battle system is by far the funest and best around, but the story line could use some touch ups. It generally follows the same general story line of Grandia 2, but a little different. This game still is in my top 3 games of all time, so if u like RPG's I'd recomend this game, and even if you don't this'll give you a good taste of what you're missing.
Summary: As for an intro to this game;not needed. Grandia attempts to bring back their classic and legendary battle system to the PS2 in a whole new world. And hey couldn't have done it any better. As for the tiniest details, this game could have been better, especially the storyline. Overall, though, this could be one of the best RPG's on the PS2 for years to come. Now---on to the details...
