Like the Simpson game’s developers, Aliens vs. Predator started out in ’99 on the PC. as a popular franchise borrowing the form of the popular game at the time (Half-Life). The game did well with just about everyone and scored a sequel in ’02, they both ended up doing well enough to spawn remixes dubbed A.v.P. Gold and A.v.P.2: Primal Hunt, and that one included new missions and stories. Then I guess the creators decided, “Where shall we take this series next….hmmm….I know, let’s rip off another popular game and mass sell it this time with console versions! Perfect, let’s get right to it!!” (Ect.) Thus, A.v.P. Extinction was born.
Starcraft….oh, sorry. I meant “Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction” is a strategy based game where you are a god-like general. As the god general, you control one of three armies like the Marines and Predators through several tactical missions to annihilate the opposite species. Now I will praise this game for being the first command and conquer type game for the PS2, if you haven’t played any of these (usually only on the PC.) types of games before, your in for a gaming experience! And if you’re a fan of the Blizzard games like Diablo and Warcraft, you must take a shot at this one cause it was made for you. But compared to Starcraft, this game just wasn’t as deep, especially if you’re like me and are looking for a game that improves off of Starcraft rather than just copies it. In fact, it might not be a bad idea for you to get some experience with another commanding game before trying A.v.P:E, I have beaten Starcraft to the bone and a few of the levels in this game took me hours to complete!
One of the problems with this type of game is that you can only get such detailed graphics with characters no taller than a toe nail clipping, and still end up with a PS1 looking game. Aside from corny graphics, this game has quality sound effects (but a weak musical score), same fun and addicting game play as any of the PC. command games, and will definitely take some time off of your hand if you let it. On the other hand, they really could have done more with it and like most games with the “copy formula”; it doesn’t compete with the caliber of its original predecessors. Bottom line, while nothing more than a rip off, this game is still very much enjoyable for people who take their games seriously; don’t let the Simpson’s comparison lead you off.
