Microsoft Xbox Live Communicator X Box Accessories Review

Microsoft Xbox Live Communicator

Description
Want to intimidate your opponents with a deep, threatening voice? Always wish you could sound like a robot? Now you can! With the Xbox Live Communicator and the Xbox Live online gaming service it's easy to do. Use your voice like never before. This headset allows for games to do really amazing things, like changing the sound of your voice for starters. And, if your game character is in a cave, your voice could echo off the walls. You can even catch up with old friends while you play. Who knew chatting with distant relatives could be this fun?

Summary:
Overall not bad. I had some lag issues ininitally and was VERY disappointed in the service. THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE XBOX LIVE THOUGH!!! I went to the linksys website and found a firmware update for my router. One of the issues this fixed was poor xbox live performance. After that, no problems.

Make sure to check your router firmware first, you may save yourself lots of aggravation.

Summary:
The Xbox Communicator is a great tool for Xbox Live, not only that it is great to use with a cordless phone. If they made more headsets like the Xbox Communicator it would probaly be the number one tool for phones and online gaming.

Summary:
The service is NOT lagg free , I have cable and expierence lagg with just four players, the fact that i can only host four people in unreal championship, and only TWO in ghost recon, makes me so sad and dissapointed, the service is not good at all if u own a pc, in fact the games are less appealing to since i can get just about every good title on my pc also and earlier makes me think this might be the straw that broke the camels back

Price Paid:  $50.00 from Xbox.com

Summary:
The Xbox communicator headset is a well constructed paripherial with slick, comfortable design. The headset is very light weight and bendable. The earpieces snugly fit over each ear and the device sets on the back of your neck so you don't have to worry about messing up your hair to put it on.
By default, the earpiece fits over your left ear, but you can easily change it over to fit on your right instead. A small cable connects the communicator headset to a controller module that plugs into any Xbox controller (where a memory card goes). Since Xbox controllers have 2 slots for memory cards, you can still have a memory card in the controller that is set up for Xbox Live. This comes in very handy if you want to take your controller to a friends house so both of you can play on Xbox Live from his xbox.
From the controller module, you can turn the communicator off and adjust the volume. While playing it's quite easy to block certain people that feel the need to make asses of themselves by using profanity or being offensive. Also, you can apply a mask to your voice so that you sound like a little kid, a girl, a chipmunk, a robot, or lots of other things.

Price Paid:  $49.00 from selected as beta tester

Summary:
With Xbox live or XBL as i will refer to it, Microsoft will change the way we all view gaming forever. I was lucky enough to be included in the last wave of beta testers. Xbox live starter kit costs 49.99 which includes a one year subscription to the online service, the xbox communicator, and online demo versions of Whacked (a fusion frenzy type party game), the xbox live starter disk, and MOTO GP ONLINE, as a beta tester i recieved NFL FEVER 2003 but it will expire on November 15th when XBL is released, whether there will be a demo replacement in its place i do not know. Interesting fact about MOTO GP ONLINE is that if you own the retail version you can unlock new tracks and bikes in the online version OR you could save your money for another XBL game and rent the retail version instead, after you unlock new tracks and bikes you could take it back and have the info saved on your harddrive for use in the online version.
Connecting your xbox to your modem for online play couldnt be easier. I have a cable modem so thats what i will be referring to here, if you have another set up then bestbuy.com has a terrific setup where it asks you questions and at the end tells you everything you need to get up and running. As i said i have cable modem and i didnt want to spend 80+ dollars for a router or hub, a router or hub basically lets your computer and xbox live run at the same time, however with me whenver im on xbox live i stay on for hours so i elected to not fool with routers or hubs. If you dont mind only having one or the other on then all you need is some Category 5e cable or CAT 5 cable for short. Unplug the etherent cable from the back of your modem, after that its very important to RESET the modem, then plug in the CAT 5 cable, after that you just plug the other end into the back of your xbox and your ready! Once you boot up the XBL starter disk you will go through a series on menus to setup your account, basic info that is entered via the onscreen keyboard. When you get to gamertag hold up and wait, clear your head, no matter what you read, no matter what you hear, YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR GAMERTAG ONCE IT IS SELECTED, however you can change account information such as email, billing, credit card number etc, so choose wisely, the only way to change it is to buy another 50.00 starter kit. Once you choose your gamertag you come to a place to enter a subscription code, PC users will recognize this as all PC games have CD keys that you have to enter, you want to enter the one on the inside of the jacket the disk came in. After that comes our second important menu, CREDIT CARD, whats that? you dont have a credit card? No problem, go to a local bank and open a checking account and request a debit card, debit cards carry the VISA or MASTERCARD logo and can be used anywhere credit cards are accepted. What some people confuse is that they will get charged 49 for the kit and then 49 for there one year service, this isnt true, your one year subscription is paid for the moment you walk out of the store with your kit, Xbox live will offer Premium content in the future, be it add on levels, new characters, tournament entry fee, the possiblities are endless, the credit card just insures the user is 18 or older and also makes it easy for you to purchase the content if you choose. For those of you who have parents with credit cards that are not to keen on putting on your XBL account tell them that the info can be password protected and let them do that password so that they wont think you will go buying extra content without permission. After that your good to go simply select a game or if you have NBA 2k3 or another XBL compatible game simply select PLAY LIVE and have at it.

The final peice of technology you get is the xbox communicator. You can set it up so that it will be over your right ear or your left, the rubber gell material fits snug and comfy over your ears and the band that normally goes on top of your head goes in the back. The first thing you will notice and no doubt be shocked about is the quality and crystal clear sound of people that are talking to you, wanna sneak peek? Call your friend up and immediatly say IM GOING FOR THE FLAG, the clarity that you hear his voice is what you will hear through your headphones. The communicator plugs into a box unit that in turn plugs into the top of your controller, on this you can control volume and also press a big black button that changes the little green light to red, red means you are muted and people cannot hear you speak, i cannot stress the importance of the mute button. Me and my wife have pet nicknames for each other and talk baby talk sometimes (please dont ask) I was playing MOTO GP and she came home from work, i immediatly launched into her nickname followed by some sweet talk, next thing i know about 14 people start laughing, some saying "what the h###" , since your name appears in the upper left corner when you speak i couldnt hide it was me, i always am aware of the mute button now.
Another great feature is your friend list. Adding friends is easy enough, you go to options where it will give you the ability to add a person you just played. In games like moto gp where there is a lobby you wait in before everyone races you can go to the option menu and then to PLAYERS where you can choose to ask someone to be your friend. The only minor complaint i have is that when someone asks to be your friend you are not told, only when you go to your friend list to invite them to a game or to see what they are playing will you see a new name and be told they want to be friends, you will then be asked to accept or decline the request, other than that no gripes here, you can choose to appear offline also if you dont feel like getting invited to any games. If your friend is playing NBA2k3 or another sports game, you will see the game they are in and even the teams and current score, just another cool feature of the friend list.
Alot of you may be wondering "Hows lag?" well lag will be in any online game you play. From my experience this is what i can tell you. My brother was playing a guy in california, at the other end of the united states and we saw lag 3 times the entire game and it was very very minor, for every 6 games you play you might spot lag in 1 game, me personally i have never lagged in MOTO GP at all , so the answer is virtually no lag and what little there is not only does it rarely pop up but when it does its not enough to hurt your gameplay. Well i hope ive shed some light for you on this great masterpiece and i look forward to seeing you online, my gamertag is SILENTKILL, and one final thing about the gamertag is that once you get a gamertag, no one in the world can use it, for example i will be the only SILENTKILL in the world. So if any of you reading this ever come across me in Unreal Championship i would like for you to stop and say "hey thats the guy that wrote that very informative review, hows it goin?" then lower your weapon and walk away, yeah right, only in a perfect world.
