from Game Summary: Ok, I hade quite high hopes for Pariah when I started seeing the first screenshots last year, I figured the use of the Unreal graphics engine would give this game a visual edge over its other FPS competitors not to mention that time-old Unreal playability. I would say the playability is there but the graphics did not live upto my expectations. The game itself is well designed and has some brilliant physics, namely the rag doll effect. The AI is quite good although the earlier enemies you encounter are completely retarted and just stand there waiting to be shot, this is the case even on the harder difficulty settings but a syou progress through the game the wenemies become consistantly more sneaky. Pariah has one small fault which lets it down, this is the limited array of weapons whaich are available, it seems that when these games are developed there seems to be some kind of secret code that says you must have an oversized Machine Gun which looks much more powerful that it is, a Shot Gun and a Rocket Launcher. Come on now guys, this game is set five hundred years into the future I'm sure that the Plasma gun is not the only high-tech weapon that has been developed over the last half a century. Playing the futuristic card when it comes to FPS games is a great tool for developers to splash out on the creativity of the surroundings and features as there are no boundries like you would find in modern day based shooters. This is where Pariah unfortunetly lacks imagination. The environments are quite dull for most of the game and comprise mainly of rocks and trees until you stumble across the odd structure here and there. Its not until you reach the later indoor levels that the environments start to get a little more interesting but by that time you may have got bored and stopped playing.
Its not all bad though, Pariah does offer a playability above most of the othr recent FPS efforts of late. The physics is very well programmed and the control method is pretty easy to master. The games weapon upgrade feature is a brilliant idea and the ugrades do actually make a difference to the efficiency of the game. Being able to carry around a portable Health Tool (medikit kinda thing) is very useful especialy in the later levels when things start to get a bit hairy. This probably one of the better shooters released recently but having to cmpete with the likes of Doom 3 and Halo 2 makes for some stiff competition. Report this review >>
