from Toys R Us Summary: WOW I thought, and so did many others, when they first heard that Enter the Matrix was coming out soon. When it came out I bought it in the first week! How could I not, knowing that you could actually play, and be inside The Matrix. My first guess at what the game would be like was slow-motion, bullet-dodging action with all the starts of the movie. Explosions, amazing special effects, and the ability to do what no other video game has let you. In fact, I wanted to actually Enter the Matrix and do everything that they do in the film and more. My first let down was after starting up the game and seeing only Niobe and Ghost to choose from. I really enjoyed both films and wondered, who is Ghost? Not put off by the fact that you can not play as one of the lead characters I continued to play. The first level started and it took me a while to get used to the controls on my XBOX but got a grip with the basics of the game. The first thing I spotted was how Niobe ran backward, it reminded me of another game by Shiny called MDK, I felt like I was using MDK's character to run around the game with, but I soon forgot about this as I was running up the walls and pulling guns off guards that attacked me, hoorah!
After playing the first couple of levels you start to notice that it is similar to the 2nd film is some ways, after about 2 or 3 levels I just wanted to see Neo or Morpheus, but it wasn't until later on when I saw Neo in an FMV sequence took from the film! Exciting, yet crappy at the same time, he was only there for 5 seconds and there is NO way you can do to play as him, not even a cheat code!
I've got to say that it is a fun game if you're a fan of the film or just shoot 'em ups. The slow motion feature (much like Max Payne's) makes the game worth while though, and without that would not even be very enjoyable to play. The levels are a bit samey-samey but quite interesting to play, especially when you get getting killed by agents, or that one guy with the shotgun.
Near the end of the game, you come across FMV sequences featuring the Logos, Niobe's ship. And you actually get to change from a 3rd person shoot 'em up to a 1st person flying / driving sort of game. Does it work? Hell no! The ship flies like a rock going down a hole, bumping around and being generally clumsy. You sort of just bump around the course with Sentinels attacking you from all angles, you are going way to fast to see where you are going, and you just end up guessing where to go and what to do. This part of the game was a big let down, especially compared to the fun you have with the vampires, it was almost like I was playing Buffy The Vampire Slayer but with more slow motion, to be honest though I think I enjoy playing Buffy more.
So yeah, Enter the Matrix is a fun game, with slow-motion fighting being the highlight and probably the main selling point (apart from saying that you need to play this game to fully understand The Matrix! Can you believe that), but once you have done a few levels and have done all the moves you can muster, then it just becomes a bit dull. The difficulty of the levels vary from easy, to easy, to really hard, then easy again. Which can become annoying, when you keep dying or falling off at the same place. After you've completed the game, there is the option to go through it as the other character, but I never did. It's not like Resident Evil where you get a different storyline, it's just the same game with a different character, so I never bothered and probably won't do. Another way to keep you interested in the game is a hacking system which I couldn't work out, and had to find a guide online to help me through it. The end result though is hardly worth the effort. This game cost me 40 from Toys 'r us with a free pad, which is quite nice. I wish I never paid that full price for it though; I could've got an XBOX Live Kit for that price.
Overall I would like to finish by saying you should just rent this game two or three times, and buy it if you like it then. Or, if you're a film fan and want to complete a set then buy it. Otherwise I'd go for a more fun and cheaper alternative like Max Payne or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, both of which are now in the Xbox classics range and are much lower priced.
