$0.00 Summary: Finally! another Xbox exclusive title hits the shelves. Great, at least now I can play a game written for my technically superior console, rather than have to make do with something that panders the lowest-common-denominator (yet still more expensive) Playstation hardware.
I'm somewhat sad to report then, that HTR:Redeemer is a typical Xbox title:
Spiffy Graphics.. Check
Big Sound.. Check
Liberal dose of T&A.. Check
Smooth Controls.. Check
Slick Overall Feel.. Check
Weak gameplay.. Unfortunately Check
Everyone knows that what the Xbox really needs is exclusive titles that are more than just re-vamped versions of old genres with a few more polygons and a bit of pixel shading and bump mapping. The release titles for the 'box showed off the enormous potential of Microsofts gaming system. Halo and Morrowind showed you what could be done with an integrated hard drive games console back in 1999, unfortunately little has come along since to re-enforce these ideas. Developers of exlusive titles have instead focussed on utilising the graphical prowess of the 'box.. knocking out better looking versions of tried and trusted shooters, beat-em-ups and driving games with little or no originality in gameplay.
Today, the Xbox is in an uncomfortable middle ground between PC and Console markets. Its the only console on the market capable of even 'thinking' about handling ports of many PC games, yet Microsoft seems to be singularly failing to use this key fact to its advantage in terms of the software houses it approaches. Sitting at the computer for hours playing something deep and absorbing like X2 is something millions of us enjoy, what the Xbox should be trying to do is get us 'mature' gamers back into the living room in front of the TV, and not just churning out endless arcade titles with weak playability and a 15 hour completion time.
