Summary:
Super Bubble Pop (SBP) is a one or two player game that, at first glance, seems to be a clone of Bust A Move. But it is not, not by a long shot. It is a true 3D action puzzler, meaning that you have to solve, very quickly, puzzles that are actually three dimensional in nature. Two other true 3D puzzlers that come to mind are Super Monkey Ball and Zoocube, both of which are Gamecube titles.

However, SBP has a much steeper initial learning curve that either of those two games. So steep, in fact, that many gamers, especially younger ones, will give up on it in frustration. This is not a 'pop in the disk and play' title, at least when you first try it. Although the game has a training mode, it does little to prepare you for the onslaught of information you have to keep track of during gameplay, especially for the first few hours while you're learning basic gameplay dynamics.

Once you past the learning hump, though, this game is a lot of fun. Not only is it fun to play, it is a visual and audio feast as well. It's tempting to call Super Bubble Pop a party game, but the level of concentration required is very high, and the slightest distraction can be a hindrance, so it's playability in a crowd is suspect.

However, Super Bubble Pop could have benefited from just a little more polish. Just a few more options like a more comprehensive manual, a variable difficulty/speed setting, and a handicap ability in two player mode, along with a couple of other minor things, would have made this game a lot better, but I'm giving it a 5 nonetheless. In terms of originality and being a joy to play, it more than offsets any little gripes I have about the game.

In the final analysis, a puzzle game is worth having if it is hard to put down and has a lot of replay value. And by those standards, Super Bubble Pop is a clear winner. Especially for only $20.

Super Bubble Pop uses an autosave based on name input, and maintains a ten place ranking based on that same input. It allows use of either the hard drive or an optional memory card for game and option saves.
