Price Paid:  $15.00 from UK mail order

Summary:
This review is based on the PC version (it's also on XBox). From the moment I started the Yager demo I was captivated. Before my wide-open eyes I saw graphics, character movement and rendering, voice acting, gameplay and a physics engine better than any game I'd played before and I'm a flying game buff! My first few trips through the demo were mostly to gawk at the stunning graphics. What also set Yager apart was the combination of a FPS with a RPG plot, excellent character development and amazing, cinematic cut scenes. You play Magnus Tide, wisecracking, freelance pilot for Proteus who's trying to mend his reputation after he crashed his ship on a routine delivery flight, causing the female lead, Sarah, a communications officer at Proteus, and Magnus's former girlfriend to be demoted. His attempts to win Sarah back is a subplot.

German-made Yager sets itself apart from other games, in that, a private Yager development team formed to design the game that had been a hobby of the lead developer for 10 years. THQ then published the title, but only in Europe and Japan. As a result, I had to order my copy from the UK. However, Kemco released Yager in North America in Oct. 2004.

Price Paid:  $20.00 from Gamestop

Summary:
Having been released in Europe some time ago, Yager is now available in the US. The good points of this game ? Nice graphics and a bargain price of just $20. The bad points ? Kludgy controls, a mediocre checkpoint save system, confusing and frustrating level design, very linear gameplay, and no multiplayer component all combine to make Yager underwhelming. For me, what could have been an engaging sci-fi version of Crimson Skies instead became a disappointment. Hardcore “flight n’ fight” fans may be willing to overlook Yager's frustration threshold and grind their way thru the game, but a more general audience is probably better off passing on this title.
