Rainbow Six 3 (RS3) provides gamers a good single player experience, and a top-rated online experience. Obviously, you’ll get more out of this game if you have Live, but the game will still provide about 10-15 hours of play the first time though the single player campaign. Perhaps the best aspect of RS3 online is how the game promotes teamwork. No other Live game does it this well.
RS3 is a slow-paced, technical game, played from the first person perspective. The game simulates real-life aiming, real-life damage, and the AI provides some realistic behavior. As such, you will need to progress through the levels with caution. The game has a lot more suspense than pure action. Also, you will depend upon your teammates (human or AI) to keep you alive. All missions have at least 2 objectives, and the objectives are only of several types (rescue hostage, defuse bomb, prevent person from escaping). Rest assured, even on the easiest mode this game is quite challenging.
There is much less micro-managing than RS3’s predecessors. RS3 has stripped away the “planning phase” of the missions that was present in the previous Rainbow Six games. Instead, all decisions are made on-the-fly. You can point your reticule at an object/ground and command your AI teammates to go to that location. You can point at doors and give your teammates a variety of commands (open, open and clear, breach, flashbang and clear, etc). You can also tell teammates to hold or follow. (BTW, all commands to AI can also be issued by speaking into your Xbox Live headset, while in single player campaign.) But that is the extent of your control over the AI. The AI sort-of handle themselves for the most part. In most cases, they act like highly trained soldiers and will save your hide. Bit in some cases, they do stupid things like stand out in the open. You’ll have to learn which areas of which levels your AI do stupid things and then move them elsewhere or have them stay put. Report this review >>
