$33.00 Summary: For the three months that I have owned Project Gotham Racing I have enjoyed it. It is just an average racing game except for its amazing graphics, number of tracks and new super fast, stylish cars. I have just about beat this game. Since there is a timer that times that amount you play PGR, I can accurately tell you that I have played the game seventeen hours.
Setup: Project Gotham has an easy setup with many features I liked. First you can choose a style of license plate from New York, Tokyo, England or San Francisco for you vehicle. Plus you can also choose the your style and color of helmet.
The Cars: When you start playing a career you have three cars available for racing. As I recall, there is a Mercedes Convertible, a Mini Cooper and a Toyota MR2 Spyder. I have read that there are a total of twenty-nine cars in the game. I was disappointed because there is a Ford Focus, which is a very cheap vehicle. Ford must have paid a lot to get their awful car among great sports cars. Every car in PGR makes a different sound, handles different, accelerates at different rates, and has a different top speed. I assume that they characteristics of each car are realistic, but I don’t know. Overall, I was impressed by the selection of cars. I have heard though, that Sega GT 2002 has around one hundred cars.
The Actual Cars (this list doesn’t contain all the cars): 1) MR2 Spyder 2) SLK 320 3) Mini Cooper S 4) New Beetle RSI 5) TT Roadster 6) Camaro SS 7) F355 Spyder 8) Viper RT-10 9) Carrera GT
The Tracks: I have read there is two hundred tracks in this game. That is more than any other racing game I have played. The tracks are from Tokyo, San Francisco, London, and New York City. What is neat about the tracks, is they have made them with all the buildings and characteristics of that certain spot. For example, in San Francisco the streets are hilly.
Graphics: The graphics in this game are great, except for the background buildings. When watching a replay of a race, I was fascinated by the car’s detail. This is one of the only games, where I can actually read a license plate’s writing. Overall, I was fascinated by the detail of close objects, but the backgrounds need improving.
The Music: The music is below average in Gotham Racing. I don’t know how many music tracks Project Gotham Racing has, but I would guess thirty to forty. The music is not my style; it is hip-hop, punk and pop. The only band that I recognized, was Good Charolette. There is no bad language in the music, since this game is rated “E.” The music in Gotham Racing is a far cry from Amped’s, another Xbox game. In Amped there are over two hundred different music tracks.
Racing Modes: There are four different types of game modes. The object in all racing modes is to get a gold, silver, or bronze metal. My favorite mode is “Quick Start,” where you race against five computer opponents. If you receive gold metals in all four races in one difficulty level than you receive a new car. There is also “Arcade” which is my least favorite game mode. This is where you have to get a set number of Kudos (I will explain Kudos later) for metals. Like in “Quick Start” if you get four gold metals in a certain difficulty level than you receive a new card. There is the main mode, which is “Kudos Challenge.” This is where you have to get a set number of Kudos to receive metals. But unlike “Arcade” you receive Kudos by winning races and other challenges. The last mode is “Metal Pursuit.” The pure purpose of Metal Pursuit is to win metals, which in turn gets you new paint jobs for your car. Overall, I liked having all four game modes.
Controls: The right trigger is your gas, the left your brake. The ABCD buttons control a manual upshift and downshift, the parking brake, and a view behind your car. The white button changes your view from inside the car to above/behind the car, to the side of the car, and to way above/behind the car. You can use either your left joystick or left thumbpad to steer. I find myself only using the joystick. The feedback through the controller is great. On gravel streets in New York and London the thing vibrates like you truly driving a car on gravel.
Tips: The main key to this game is controlling your car’s speed around corners. Also, once you get comfortable driving you can ram into you opponents and move ahead.
Difficulty: Project Gotham Racing has an average difficulty level. What I found interesting, is that when you are in the middle of the game, the difficulty level is at its peak. I found this game to be easiest at the very start and ending. The hardest game mode is “Arcade” and the easiest is “Quick Start.”
Kudos: Project Gotham Racing is based around Kudos. In each race that you receive a metal in, you usually also receive Kudos. When you receive a certain number of Kudos you get to race newer cars. I don’t really like Kudos method but it isn’t the worst. The best racing games I have found are those make you buy your cars.
Multiplayer: I like the multiplayer in this game. There can be as many a four players racing against eachother. As you proceed though your career, more tracks and cars become available for head to head racing. When I raced one on one, the screen split horizontally. The best multiplayer game for Xbox is James Bond: Agent Under Fire.
Aspects of game I liked: 1) Great Graphics. 2) Sweet Cars 3) 200 tracks 4) Difficulty level suited me well 5) The cool thing about PGR, is that this is probably the closest I am going to get to driving these amazing vehicles.
Aspects of game I disliked: 1) Music 2) I wish there were just a few more cars 3) Ford Focus is included in this game
Aspects that could be added: I miss being able to upgrade my cars, like I have in Need For Speed 5. The only thing that you can change on a car in PGR is the color.
Overall: I would recommend this game to anyone. It is rated “E” for everyone, so even little kids might like it. If you like racing games than PGR is a must buy. I am not a fan of Nascar racing games, but I am a big fan of PGR, so don’t expect this game to be anything like Nascar and Indy games.
Price: This game has gone down from $50.00 to $30.00. I had bought it on Ebay a while ago for $25.00. At the time I bought it, the game was $50 dollars at most stores. Last time I checked, you could buy PGR for only $15.00 on Ebay, so you might want to take a look at that.
Other good racing games: Need For Speed 4 (PC) Need For Speed 5 (PC) Sega GT 2002 (Xbox) Grand Theft Auto 3 (PC and Playstation 2) Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (Xbox, Playstation2 and GameCube)
