Summary:
Oh my god, where do I begin. It pains me to know that this game did terribly as far as sales go. There isn't an action game out there that is better than this.

Otogi is Devil May Cry done right. Set in Feudal Japan, Raikoh is brought back from the dead to stop the resurrection of a demon king. Yeah, the plot is standard feudal Japan "stop the revival" but is that bad? No.

You have to experience the combat for yourself, I can't put it into words, but I'll say that one could finish an entire level zipping through the air DBZ style without ever touching the ground. Its amazing and so much fun. Otogi takes the things you wish you could do in a game and makes them possible.

Summary:
On a dark and gloomy bridge [lots of Japanese folklore] you play a sword wielding warrior. That's the short version of the games backstory. Now, let me start out by stating that Otogi is an action game pure and simple. The story, while certainly not hollow, takes a back seat to hacking and slashing everything that moves and a bunch of stuff that doesn't.
So, how good it Otogi? I have to admit, that's a tough one to call. I find Otogi very much a "one trick pony" but that trick is very cool. If you are a fan of action, hack and slash, I am certain you will find a lot to like about the game. If you are they type of gamer that needs a game to have layers, side quests, involving story, mini-games and the like you may have your fill of Otogi in a matter of a few hours. As an action game, Otogi is very high quality stuff. How much you get out of it will simply depend on how much you like pure action games. As far as reviews go, its a bit of a cop out but I think many gamers will understand exactly what I mean. Is Otogi a good game? Absolutely. Will it appeal to me? How would I know? An no review should try to tell you different.

Price Paid:  $40.00 from Babbages

Summary:
The XBox hasn’t seen a game with such original and beautiful style as Otogi: Myth of Demons since Jet Set Radio Future was released early last year. Sega, once again, offers a very unique and convincing Japanese experience. Its action, graphics and audio combine to create a perfectly mystical and intense samurai world set in feudal Japan.

Despite its perfect presentation, Otogi may never be considered a financial success in the US market. Similar to JSRF’s cell shaded futuristic Tokyo, Otogi’s highly stylish dreamlike world will either engross you or escape you. Released over seven months ago in Japan, Otogi will ultimately find a limited audience here in the US.

Live:
Live? Otogi: Myth of Demons doesn’t even have multiplayer. I’ll talk about that more in “Suggestions”.

Suggestions:
As gaming parties become more and more mainstream, a title that offers only a single player experience is truly limiting its appeal. At the center of Otogi’s fantastic style is the principal that Raikoh is a lone samurai, tasked with single handedly purging Japan of its demonic infestation. Incorporating multiplayer options into the story of this game may have been an impossible task for From Software and Sega. Still, any title that brings a gamer into its story without offering the open ended gameplay of multiplayer, loses that gamer once the story is over.

Hopefully Otogi: Hyakki Toubatsu Emaki, which is currently in development, will address the missed opportunity for multiplayer levels.

Add to your Collection?
If you already own Akira or the Princess Mononoke, Otogi: Myth of Demons is going to fit perfectly on your shelf. You’ll appreciate the references to Japanese folklore and its feudal style. Otherwise, playing Otogi will be a crossroads experience- you’ll either be smitten by the perils of a mystic samurai life and eagerly spend the $40 or you’ll simply appreciate its surprising style and be happy it was only a rental.

, from a place that don't pretend to have good games

Price Paid:  $1.00 from a store with quality games unlike EBX

Summary:
This game rocks! I can't say enough about it. To claim this game is all style over substance is just ignorant and proof that whoever would make such comments is clearly not an old school gamer but merely someone who was spawned from the "feed me some more figgy pudding mum! Me hands is too feeble to feed me'self!" era. Let's face it folks - it's been a while since games were made that would have you cursing at the screen and smashing random nearby objects. Otogi is not only a spectacular game graphically it's also fun to play! You play as a samarai who must battle demons to restore not only his family name but a great seal as well. Think Gun Valkrye with Japanese music and backgrounds and you get the picture. You can double jump, hack and slash, and determine the kinds of weapons and magic your character will go into battle with. You can also select from various items to help raise defenses as well, such as belts and armour. Let's face it - this ain't no Final Fantasy type RPG but it surely spanks Squaresoft where it hurts - graphics. I don't know about you but just because a game is pretty doesn't mean I have to dislike it if it's too hard for me to beat. Old schoolers will love this game because it doesn't cater to the "I'm too feeble to replay levels over! I want cheat codes! I want unlimited time and health that's not affected by using my magic!" mentality that so many kiddies grew up with in the late '90's. Remember Final Fight? You would use your special moves and it took health! Yet when you went up against that final boss that's what made it so amazing! You would have to EARN that battle the old school way and the reward was getting to use that magic to deliver the final blow to the end boss! That's ol' school gaming at it's finest folks. You have to learn to conserve and use strategy.

, from UK

Price Paid:  $50.00 from Game UK

Summary:
PLUS POINTS = Japanese derived XBOX game. Purge various levels of Japanese demons using super cool weapons whilst listening to haunting Japanese music. Amazing graphics really show what the XBOX is capable of, and music to die for. Collect amazing new spells and weapons whilst you venture through some of the most graphically amazing levels yet seen on the XBOX

NEGATIVE POINTS = Camera can be a pain, best not to lock onto enemys too often. Like with most games, it can get repetitive as the main focus of the game is to KILL STUFF...lol.
