Summary:
I'm a casual gamer and a serious paintball tournament player. This game has been a buzz in the small paintball world for some time now, and was widely demo'ed at the recent World Cup Paintball Tournament that was held in San Diego recently. I already had a Xbox but only played it on the rare occassions I had spare time with games like Halo, GTA series and sports games. After demoing the game at the tournament, I immediately went out and bought it the first day it was available, mainly because it was a video game that I could really relate to...and plus I play real life paintball against many of the players featured in the game itself. Since I bought this game, I now make time to play the Xbox and has seen more hours of play in the past weekend then since I brought it home from Target a year ago.
The game is definitely NOT a breakthrough game for the industry. It has only average graphics, really bad AI, ok storyline (for single player), basic layout when comparing it to other game titles like Halo 1 and 2, GTA series, etc.... But as a tournament paintball player, it really does capture the feel, excitement of actually playing paintball...even in single player mode.
In real life paintball...there is a huge power struggle between two different tournament leagues and game formats, both parties feel that getting on TV is the promised land that will bring lots of fame and $$$$....most of the ambition is for personal gain rather then for the sport or players. I think this game will do more for the sport for tournament paintball then either of those two leagues will offer in the very near future. That is partly why I'm taking the time to write this review...if you were ever remotely curious about paintball or playing in tournaments, I highly suggest you get this game, it's a very good simulation. As more folks who have never played real life paintball rent or buy this game....peaks their curiosity and make the effort and drive to try it for real, the sport will grow even faster then it's growing right now.
Activision timed the release of this game perfectly, and I think will only accelerate the participation of paintball and tournament paintball.
As a real life paintballer, I highly recommend you try this game out.
