Summary Goldenye is said to be one of the greatest First Person Shooters of all time. When in fact this game is so terribly over-rated. In all honesty it can be thoroughly entertaining, yet it has many noticable flaws. Some that can be ignored and others that may have an effect on your experience of the game. The only thing that I personally enjoy about this game is the humor the game unintentionally creates. I could laugh all day at how silly this game is, the terrible AI the ugly faces on the gaurds, the ridiculous loctations you visit that werent in the movie, and altogether how much this game ISNT like the movie in ANY way besides the name and story and even then it starts to get questionable. By the way the starting intro and the end credits are also hilarious, Boris with a cougar magnum or RC-P90 ahahahahahahaha. OVERALL RATING: I personally can't see how this game could be rated more than 1% out of 100% Truly the WORST game on the N64 well, besides body harvest, blast corps, shadowman 64, cruising USA, Duke Nukem 64, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Donkey Kong 64, Rayman 64, Glover, 40 winks, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Space Station:Silicon Valley, Turok 2, Turok 3, Poke'mon Stadium 1 & 2, Poke'mon Snap, Clay Fighter 63 & 1/3, Mace the Dark Age, Quake, Quake 2, South Park 64, All wrestling titles on N64 except WCW vs NWO revenge, Chameleon Twist, Kirby 64, Bomberman 64, Mischief Makers, Forsaken, Killer Instinct Gold, Jet Force Jemini, Twisted Metal 64, F-Zero X and South Park Rally.Sound Really bad. The music is like everything else in this game, terrible. Its not based on the original soundtrack of goldeneye, because either they couldnt reproduce it in N64 format or they were'nt allowed to. It cracks me up so much listening to all the silly music they came up with, for example try playing Frigate or Dam, they are just so terrible that its funny. The weapons all sound strange and warped, yet they somehow fit in with all the other strange content in the game so thats okay. The gaurds make some funny sounds too. That rocket launcher sound however is just so painful your ears might bleed if you listen to it more than once. (Sounds something like TICCKEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!)Gameplay PLAYABILITY: One of the few highlights of this game is the playability, easy configurable controls and several skill levels to choose from: Agent, Secret Agent and 00 Agent, with the latter being the hardest. It also boasts a rather useful crosshair feature which may be toggled on and off, alowing the player to target certain areas of the enemy more accurately. Which brings us to another topic, location specific damage. Introduced to us for the first time on N64 it allowed players to experience more realism when shooting enemies. For example, shooting an enemy in the foot will cause him to hop around, while a shot to the head will kill him outright. It is this system that may have been responsible for goldeneye's popularity, although many say they are more fond of the multiplayer side of the game. LEVELS: There are many levels in Goldeneye 64, which may leave you wondering "whats going on here?" did bond really go to all these places in the movie? or is this level supposed to be that famous movie locale? Heh, I know i did. Maybe im just picky but since when did bond go on an all out killing spree on the frigate? or chase 006 through an underground cavern? or better yet, shoot it out in a nuclear silo? i guess Rare decided that the movie didnt offer enough in the way of level creativity so decided to make some stuff up.. fair enough for gameplay, but not for movie contintuity. WEAPONS: A satisfactory selection of weapons, but nothing to get excited about. You have your semi-automatic pistols, your sub-machine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, explosives and a rocket launcher. As well as a drivable tank at certain points in the game. However you wont get to use all of these guns in one level, each level has its own selection of weapons, you start out with 1 or 2 of your own, usually your trusty PP7, and are required to pick up any along the course of your mission/enemy massacre. The guns themselves are all ridiculous, the sniper rifle for instance looks like a drink bottle strapped to a long stick, the PP7 model is terrible, the klobb is the worst gun in the game even holding 2 of them it takes about 300 head hits to kill 1 gaurd in 00 agent. The KF-47 is just ugly. And the most pathetic attempt at a close quaters combat weapon.. bonds karate chop. It does little to no damage unless the enemy is hit in the head from behind. DIFFICULTY: In Agent skill, it is pretty much run around and do as you please, very little threat of dying and the gaurds will go down in 2 hits or less regaurdless of where you hit them. Less objectives to complete as well. Dam for instance: Jump off dam. Thats it, you could practicaly complete that mission without shooting anyone, and you probably wont even be hit on the way. 00 Agent is where it heats up, and gets ridiculous. The game starts to lose its realisim when it takes you 2 full clips emptied into 1 gaurds head from 2 9mm uzi's (thats right im talking about the Janus Special Forces in the Caverns levels) Xenia can also prove a bit unrealistic and un-movie like, brandishing a grenede launcher and an RC-P90 (a very powerful sub-machine gun). ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: (AI) Goldeneye has very little AI for its enemies, infact probably the worst kind of AI, basically all the gaurds will follow a patrol route or stand still until you come within their visual range, which is sometimes completely random. Then once you are spotted, all the gaurd is told to do is run at you and attempt to shoot you. Terrible, what this results in is for example, you shoot a few gaurds in a room, and then go to open a door and there will be about 5 or more enemies trying to force themselves into the doorway all at once, absolutely ridiculous, all you have to do is open up with you guns and they are dead, they dont run, hide, or show any emotion. Occasionally a gaurd may jump or roll to avoid your fire, well it may SEEM like he is trying to avoid your fire but really the game is just using it as an excuse to play a certain attack animation. For example, you come face to face with a gaurd, and instead of simply raising his gun to shoot you he will jump to the side, then look at you over his shoulder and then lower his gun slowly to fire.. by then you could already have shot him and thus proves the terrible AI, another example of bad AI is when you get to close to a guard they will attempt to shoot you, figure out you are to close and simply lower their weapon. In fact the only threat the enemies pose in this game is in sheer numbers and in the higher difficulty when they have too much health and do far too much damage. MULTIPLAYER: One word, Terrible. You probably thought i would say "classic" like all the others, but no, in reality it is simply run around a huge pointless level, with boring guns and bad animations. Not to mention everyone in Multiplayer is way to strong. LASTABILITY: Player specific. Unlocking the cheats would be about the only salvation of this game.Would you like to Comment? Summary This game was the very first N64 game I played when I bought the system. At first, when you start the mission briefing, I didn't know what to do, I just pressed B the whole time. So when I got to the first mission, I was surprised. The place looked so real. I have to say that this game has soo many missions that it's so adventurours. You are so independent in the game, you're free to go wherever you want, you can even kill your partner. Whenever I think of this game, I remember the old times I used to play it, when I was in fifth grade in 1999-2000, in the Islamic month of Ramadan, i used to connect the N64 with the TV downstairs in the kitchen and I used to stay up ALL night playing it. It's somehow exactly like the movie. This game gives me a lot of memories about how I used to play it in the past, and I still have the game, I still play it. It's a great game, I tell ya!Sound I don't really wanna talk much about the music, because whenever I play the game, I turn the music down. So, I didn't get a chance to listen to the music well. But the bad thing about the characters is that they don't speak, they talk in text. But the sound when a gaurd is knocked out is good, when he shouts, and the funniest is when a guy sneezes, but that often happens.Gameplay The one thing about the game that bothers me is that it's viritual reality. The character isn't there when you play. You just see what he is seeing. I sometimes pretend that I'm James Bond himself looking out there. The controls are controlable, you can change the way you use the joystick. The game is just terrific when you play it, you feel that every mission is your favorite.Would you like to Comment? I would constantly keep getting better at the game. I am a whole lot better now than when I first got the game. I love this game so much I will not even loan it out to my best friend. I never let this game out of my site. I think this game is better than Perfect Dark in some ways.Sound The sound is pretty good, but who pays attention to sound. I like the music in the game. Especially the elevator music.Gameplay The gameplay is just awesome. The levels are a nice size and there are plenty of guys to kill. The multiplayer mode is even better. Me and my friends would spend hours playing on multiplayer. It would be an ongoing battle of who is the best.Would you like to Comment? Summary This game was the first game i bought for n64, i bought it the christmas n64 came out and i still play it all the time. It is the best multiplayer game EVER, me and the 3 other hardcore gamers are always at my house still play this for about two hours a day. This is the god of all games that ever came out for any nintindo platform.Sound I dont listen to the sounds, i usualy have lots of people playing and talking, and music playing so the sounds are turned off. I do love the bond theme though it is pretty cool.Gameplay the game play is great, anybody that complains about it never gave it a fair try, i figured it out in about 5 minutes. The levels are great, some you need stratagy, others you just run and shoot. Once you get by the parts where natalia kills her self like a moron, the game is great. Multiplayer, Not a single game can ever come close to this, i still have turnaments with 40 some players. I like this game because you need more than luck to win, if you play some new games, anybody can win in a multiplayer game(brute force)(nightfire) Would you like to Comment? Summary After buying World is not Enough for the PSX last year, I felt that 007 games were a bit too hard. I got Goldeneye last night on a whim and found my previous statement to be wrong. Unlike WINE, GE is actually playable to the point where you cannot die everytime you pick up the controller. OH and multiplayer? The proximity mines are wonderful wonderful weapons. :) I can honestly say that I like this game more than Perfect Dark because this game does not require a memory pack to do the missions (as PD did)Sound Made me feel like I was in the movie.Gameplay Standard One Person shooter. I personally like how you can actually hide behind the doors or block them to gain advantage.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. The ruler of all bond games. This is one of the greatest N-64 games of all time. But, unfortunatly the spring of sequils that follow GoldenEye can't quite match up with it (especially Tommorrow Never Dies, that's the worst one so far).Sound This game doesn't have talking in it, just text, but it is bearable. The music is great and the sound track still jingles in my head to this day.P.S.: ALL HAIL THE DK MODE!!! lol Gameplay With 20 (+) levels, an excellent multiplayer, and mind - boggling missions, the game play is unforgetable by far. Unfortunatly, this is the only Bond game where they replay how you die (er, as far as I know, I've never played The World Is Not Enough ) & I've never managed to beat the game.Would you like to Comment? Summary I don't like doing this, but I have to respond to the previous review. I couldn't play this game. I hated it. And the fact that this guy who had a PS2 before he played Goldeneye and still thought this game was good says all I need to know about the PS2! I have an Xbox and an N64 (obviously) I love both - I still play my N64 quite a bit. Well, earlier this year I decided to fire up the retro-rockets and I purchased this much bally-hooed game - I did it because of all the great things people have said about it and continue too. Yeah. I'm sure they were right (key word there is WERE)... for their time; but after subsequent improvements in gaming (and esp. gameplay) this game has become rotten. If you don't have a next-gen console yet (that is a GC or Xbox - I'm not counting the PS2!) ignore this review... I'm sure this game is fine (a million people can't be wrong, right?) But if you do have an Xbox or GC, and were lucky enough to read this review before you went out and purchased this game... I say to you: "Don't do it, man!" Not even for a dollar!Sound I do remember being less than impressed, but then again see above comment on graphics. Maybe they got better; I would think so... I mean, another Rare title has what I consider to be the best sound of all time (that being Conker!)...?Speaking of other Rare titles: this review applies to Perfect Dark as well... this and that have the same horrible controls! Gameplay Crap. Atrocious. *ssinine! And Rare is now going to be making games for the Xbox - great! I give credit to all of the millions who played this game all the way thru - and liked it. The analog stick controls your forward and backward movement, and also LOOKING left and right; while the yellow "C" buttons can move you side-to-side ("strafing") but also control looking up and down. What!?! Why?!?! I mean what the frag was Rare thinking?!? Wouldn't making the analog stick dedicated to moving and the yellow buttons to looking make more sense??? I won't even get into the 'targeting' controls - which totally wipeout all of the afore-mentioned functions and start in on a whole new level of stupidity and uncontrollability. And I tried the other "control" configurations too, including the 'use two controllers at the same time' method! I gave up on it all JUST BECAUSE THE CONTROLS WERE SO STUPID!!! Makes me realize just how great Halo really, REALLY, is... and how so much of it is so great that it is just taken for granted - like SPOT ON controls!Would you like to Comment? I am a ps2 owner and would never buy any console apart from Sony, so let me give you the 911.Goldeneye is a brilliant game, I sort of regret not getting an n64 jus for this game on its own. ( any body who says this game is violent is a mommas boy) Sound Very very good(but not as good as any gta game)Gameplay Great levels, great weapons, and the best mulitiplayer on ANY console old or new(except maybe the smackdown series for the ps1 and ps2)Would you like to Comment? Summary (From Fenix Level Makers.co)This game is pretty old, but has style and is living longer than Nintendo thought. What makes a game interesting, fun, hard, and has reasonable graphics? It is actually all in the gameplay, when you sit down and play a game like this one did you just stare at the graphics for an hour and get killed, no, you got right into it and kicked ass. What i am trying to say is that if you take time to look into games like these, you will see theyre true nature of captivating the player. Trust Me Look, Into It. Sound Sound,Sound surrounded you whilst you would play this game, when yu were in multi-player the sound of a gun reloading or firing would vary from the pressure on the controller, everything was made perfect in James Bond :Goldeneye: even the sound. Gameplay Gameplay,The only reason that i playd the game so much was because of this reason, and it hink that many N64 Players would agree with me, it combines a great storyline with fascinating weapons and characters to exploit the power of James Bond And Alec Trevalyan, Happy Gaming! If Goldeneye was on atari, i'd still think it was the best shooter! Graphics are smoothe for the N64 and so is the game play! I give this game a 5/5!Sound the sound isn't the best i've seen in games, but the gameplay and the graphics make up for it.Gameplay the gameplay is the best i've seen since duke Nukem! The missions are right where they should be and every one is unique in it's own way. For the N64, this game really does have awesome graphics!Would you like to Comment? There are more levels than in Tomorrow Never Dies and it doesn't take 2 minutes to beat it.Sound Well, you never actually hear any character talk, but the guns sound realistic.Gameplay Gameplay is great. The levels are nice and creative, but there isn't much coolness after you beat a level. This Game surpasses TWINE in my mind. It doesn't get way too hard after 4 levels like after you get to the "Villa" in TWINE.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary What else can you say about this game? Its the greatest game ever created for the N64. No game even compares to Goldeneye. Some people may say that Perfect Dark is better but its not close. The only reason they made Perfect Dark was because Goldeneye was such a hit they wanted to try to make another game like it to score another hit. I've had the game since it was made. It was the first game I bought. I play it at least 3 to 4 times a day and it still hasn't gotten old and never will.Sound Great. Having a different sound for every gun was good. Plus having great explosion sounds. I just wish you could of heard the people talk in missions.Gameplay Great. Endless hours can be put into it. Every time you play its totally different. And if your good enough to get 007 mode, you can keep adding up the difficulty whenever you get better. Plus theres uncountable modes for multiplayer. I bring the game with me to every friends house who has a 64. Cause it never gets old.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary Now I never actually owned this game. At the time it was released my mother did not let me own any games that had shooting in them. Oh man, if only I had not insisted on renting it. I really wanted to get this game. I kept on asking my mom if we could rent it, and I always got the same answer, why dont you just wait for Christmas. Well I kept on asking and finally my mother let me rent it. Well I started up the game and as soon as she saw what it was like she said that there was no way I could have it. If only I had waited for Christmas, we would opened it and it would have been too late to return it. Well enough dwelling in the past. While this game is old, at the time it came out it was one of the greatest games ever. Single player was awesome, but the multi-player was a dream. This game was so much fun. I remember complaining and complaining about not being allowed to play games with guns especially when I was 13 and the games were rated teen. Well, when I turned 15 my mom realized that I could make my own choices and she said I could buy what I wanted. It has been two years since then, and I dont think playing violent games has made me a violent person. Violent video games do not make people want to be violent, people play violent video games because that is what they want. If everyone was perfectly innocent and free from violent thoughts before they ever played violent video games then they would never get into violent games.Sound Perfect at the time!!!Gameplay At the time the gameplay was perfect. Now it is simple, but it is still perfect.!!!Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. For me, it was game of the year in 1998, after my purchase on 01/26/1998. The great values, multiplayer, and missions make this game a dream come true. Summary I've read lots of reviews on this game and the professional reviewers seem to review the movie and not the game. Those reviews state that their is sexual content and too many sexy woman trying to trick Bond. They also say that james is killing innocent bystanders for the fun of it, and that there are really no goals to thrive for and acheive in the game. Some say that they can't stand even playing the game for 15 minutes. But how can you really judge a game within a 15 minute time period? I think that Goldeneye is a great game. I also think that other reviewers who say there is sexual content and language are full of hoo-hockey.Sound The sound is great. There is no cursing what-so-ever. (as I have read in other reviews) The sound of grenades and machine guns are definitly realistic. Almost as though you are holding the weapon yourself and firing.Gameplay There is a war going on and Bond does shoot people. But he is not shooting people for the fun of it. He is shooting them to win the war and achieve his goals. In the gtame if you select agent you have less goals while secret agent will have about twice as many. You can barely see the blood unless you are close-up to the person you just shoot and the corpses fade away within a matter of seconds. Unlike Tomb Raider or Perfect Dark (which are also very good games) Goldeneye is not as violent of a game. This game is good for kids and adults who thrive for adventure and action.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member.
