Sound

This is the only place that i can slightly fauolt the game. The background music is a little repetative and not very good anyway. There is a small engine noise which i think is faorly pathetic. But the characters all have their own little array of sayings which sound fantastic and work very well. In short the music is O'K but most of the FX are pretty cool

Gameplay

I would go as far as saying that this is one of the most playable games EVER. It's single player mode is satisfying and holds loads of secrets. Then there is the multiplayer option. This is where the game really comes into its own. Up to 4 player can participate at once in races, and go against one another in the fantastic Battle Mode. I have been playing the game with the same group of people for years, and although it will probably produce more swearing than a Billy Connelly concert, its an absolute pleasure to play.
There are 16 very different courses divided into 4 groups of 4 races each, ranging in difficulty.
There is something for everyone here....

If you are having difficulty thinking of ways to approach the game here are a few ideas

--Have 2 teams of 2 and race in teams. 3 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd 1 point for 3rd. If 2 members of the same team come in first and 2nd then 7 points are awarded to that team.
--If you and your friends have a lot of spare time and you would like to find out which of you is best try this. Race every course, on every cup at every speed (64 races total) to decide the true champion.

Sound

Not much to say, it's typical Nintendo music. Nothing really stands out, but it doesn't really affect the game one way or another.

Gameplay

The first thing you'll notice is that the computer controlled racers cheat blatantly. No matter how many times you knock them out with items, they are able to catch up within a few seconds. The first time a computer opponent that you just knocked out a few seconds ago blows past you just before the finish line, you will feel like throwing your controller through your tv screen. Collision detection is also spotty, as you will occasionally fall through solid walls and guard rails for no apparent reason. The number of courses is adequate, although this game has less than the SNES version. There are only 4 battle courses, of which only 2 are really any fun. Nevertheless, there is just something incredibly addicting about playing this game, especially the 2-player GP race. It's just pure mayhem, with weapons flying all over the place, and it never gets old.

Sound

The sound is good. Nothing extraordinary but nothing to complain about. You get all the classic Mario sound-effects and music. Everything blends in nicely with the game.

Gameplay

The gameplay is classic Mario Kart fun! You race around Mario Bros-inspired tracks using Mario characters like Luigi, Toad, Bowser etc. while trying to find power-ups to make yourself go faster or to peg-off your nearest buddy. Finding a mushroom gives you a turbo boost, a star makes you invincible and increases your speed temporarily, and koopa-troopa shells are used to knock over any racer in your path to victory etc.! This game is just simply addicting and fun to play! As a multi-player game this game is UNMATCHED in its fun-factor! You and your buddies will have a BLAST racing across the many varied tracks, pegging each other off and cursing each others name all day long. The battle modes and the time-trials aren't exactly as fun as they were on the original SNES Mario Kart, but you'll find enough fun in the other game modes to keep you busy. The replay value of this game is through the ROOF! All i can say is that if you are looking for a fun arcade-type racing game, look no further. IMO its funnest racing game of all-time, possibly surpassed only by the original Mario Kart for SNES. And if you think this game just for "kids", its not. I'm 21 years old and my sister is 23 and we both love it!!

Summary

There comes a time when we have this urge to escape from reality which Mario Kart 64 provides. Players, and myself included, are satisfied with this game's uncanny concepts. Mario Kart 64 is not your typical racer which makes this game worth playing. Sure it does not grasp the same feel as Nascar Racing, or the adrenaline rush of Spy Hunter but what is there to argue about when turtle shells could be used as ammunition. Talk about using irrelevant items in times of need. This game tinkers logic to a point where it is enjoyable. Admit it, we all dream about riding go-carts above endless rainbow roads sometimes. If you enjoy competition and entertainment, then I recommend this game to you.

Mario and his friends had been successful with previous games like Mario 64 or Donkey Kong 64, but that did not stop Nintendo from publishing another title. Mario Kart 64 is the name and sheer racing is its game. Debuting in 1997, consumers and myself found this title innovative and fresh. Although, the success of Mario Kart did not begin here. A few years back was a little cartridge called Super Mario Kart for the SNES. Gamers played the original and were instantly dazzled by its unique gameplay and caliber graphics. Mario Kart 64 exceeded beyond the concepts of its predecessor but will it be favored as much? Does Mario Kart have what it takes to go beyond the recognition of the original? The only way to find out is to explore what this game had to offer. But you know Nintendo, they solemnly disappoint their fans so expect great things. I must say this game was something special alright but it is up to the eye of the beholder to judge. Great job Nintendo.

Sound

In musical terms, they fit real nicely towards the stages. For example, in Bowser's Castle, eerie music plays around the area which puts you in alert. The music scores are great but can be annoying due to repetition. The same melody is played over and over until finishing the level. Fortunately, the music is not distracting like the ones heard in Tony Hawk's, unless you harken very carefully.

As for sounds, nothing special here but mere sounds. The taunts heard as drivers pass give life to the characters. For example, when Wario cuts in front, you know very well to do something about it. Overall, sharp sound effects and well commenced shadowing.

Mario Kart 64 is a must for players who lust for fantasy realms and innovative gameplay in racing genres.

Gameplay

After a brief welcome from Mario, we are finally ready for fast-packed action. The introduction picture of Mario and his friends only eccentrates the urge to play immediately. Mario Kart 64 provides 4 different modes of play which I will explain here:

-Mario GP Mode: Ah, the main feature of the game and by far my all time favorite. Eight racers will compete in a series of races for points. Racers not selected by a player are controlled by the computer. The concept is simple; race for first place. The higher your ranks are the more points you get. First place gets you 9 points, second place gets you 6 points, third place gets you 3 points, and fourth place gets you 1 point. Sorry, no rewards for ranks lower than fourth which makes this game very challenging.

The character you choose from are: Mario, Luigi, Princess, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, and Bowser. Each character is unique due to differing status powers. You have your heavy-weights(Wario, Donkey Kong, and Bowser), your ligh-weights (Toad, Princess, and Yoshi) and your medium-weights (Mario and Luigi). The heavy-weights have better control but lack acceleration. The light-weights on the other hand have hasty acceleration but lack control. The medium-weights are perfectly in between. If you ask me, the light-weights make the best drivers. Light-weights are harder to control but it is something that cannot be helped with practice. For beginners, I recommend the medium-weights due to an equilibrium amount of speed and control. The heavy-weights are only good for safety maneuvering but useless in most cases.

You are then given a choice from four different cups: Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, Star Cup, and Special Cup. The Mushroom Cup is the easiest since it is solely training courses with simple roads. The Flower Cup is slightly harder with more turns and obstacles. Star Cup is all about lenght and patience. Finally, the Special Cup is where all the masters compete in difficult terrains and rough obstacles. Mario Raceway is one of my favorite stages, it reminds me of the game Penny Racers with all the twists and turns included.

There is nothing like surprising opponents by sneaking in front of them through short cuts. Forget short cuts, there is a better method of catching up and they are: special items. Items in Mario Kart 64 differ from homing missile-like shells to speed-decreasing thunderbolts. You can also leave traps like fake item boxes and yellow bananas. These items will surely slow drivers down if they are used properly otherwise turning them against you. I find the spiny-shell very useful since it is made solely to chase after the first place driver. These unique items definitely make this game worth playing. Where else can you use mushrooms for extra speed, the game Driver perhaps? I do not think so.

-VS Mode: In this mode, you compete with two, three or even four players in split-screen action. This is where skills are put to the test. Computer players may provide sufficient challenge but not as challenging as real competetors. When it comes to replay value, this mode takes the cake. You can play as many times as you wish as well as change characters and stages. Unlike Crash Team Racing, the items and stages are limited to prevent confusion. When friends come over, VS Mode is the place to go for quality entertainment.

-Battle Mode: This mode faces the players off in an attempt to pop the balloons that are attached to the carts. You will compete on special courses instead of typical racing courses. I thought Battle Mode was interesting concept. If you tire of racing, why not take pleasure in battle. Instead of obliterating other vehicles to win like Gran Turismo, 3 colored balloons attached from the carts must be popped instead.(Nintendo loves to play safe) Just like Mario GP and VS Modes, most of the items used previously, the banana for example, can also be used to win against other drivers. For instance, if a driver slips on a banana, they would instantly lose a balloon. You can also hide behind columns or walls to initiate sneak attacks. Other games like Star Fox 64 and Goldeneye 007 took similar game concepts realizing how much this adds to the game's main feature. Everyone learned from the master which was definitely Mario Kart 64. I tell you, plenty of potential strategy and havoc gaming available in Battle Mode.

-Time Trial Mode: In this mode, you will drive solo for three laps around your favorite course to get best time. TTM may not be an innovative feature but is essenctial towards any great racing games like Diddy Kong Racing or Chocobo Racing. Best times are also saved in the Game Pak Memory for gloting rights.^_^

As for difficulty, it depends on how well you maneuver a character. You basically place higher ranks if your controls are better than mediocre. Experience plays a big role since it determines how well you compete with others. The special items also make a difference. Mario Kart 64 is 80% skill and 20% luck so do not rely on good items all the time.

Control scheme is easy to grasp. It would take around 10 minutes to get used to the controls and a couple of days to become a master. The main buttons are "A" for acceleration, "B" for breaks, "Z" to use items, and the control stick to maneuver the driver. Mario Kart 64 is like Resident Evil or Zelda 64 where time and practice is all it takes to get used to.

Overall, a wonderfull addition to any Nintendo game collection. Mario Kart 64 has plenty of racing concepts to contribute to other games. This game is a must for get-togethers. To answer my question earlier: Yes, it is better than its predecessor. If you loved the original, there is no doubt in my mind that you will embrace this one with both arms.

Summary

Although the game was made some time ago, I have only now decided to review it. Its a great game, and I think it deserves a Child of Light review. Its the sequel to the SNES game called Super Mario Kart.

Good Points
- Its fun.
- Mario is back.
- Better than the SNES game.
- Nice colored and well designed race tracks.
- Good music and voice.
- It'll take a while to get sick of this.

Bad Points
- The engine noise can sometimes drown out the music

Overall 9.2/10
One of the best games on the N64. Really, if you don't have this players choice title, then you really should get it before the arrival of the Game Cube. It's cheap, and you wont regret it. A classic game.

Alternative Choices
MK64 is the best around, and these other games just don't match up to the brilliance.
- Diddy Kong Racing
- Mickey's Speedway USA.
Take a look at these titles if you don't have Mario Kart 64.

Sound

The music is quite good, it is fast paced and it really fits in with the Mario theme, and some bits you will remember from Super Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo. The music is good though, when you can hear it over the noise of the carts engines. Although the engines do sound realistic, I feel that it was a little too noisy. The characters have a few clips of voice for when they are hit by something or winning the championship. Peach will say "Thank you" when she passes someone, and if Mario is hit by something, he will say "Oh oh oh oh oh" or "Mamma mia". There are lots of clips there, and they are quite well done.

Gameplay

Where should I start? Character selection, you can still choose from eight characters, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Bowser, Toad, Donkey Kong (replacing DK Jr) and Wario (who stole Koopa's go-cart). The characters are split up into three groups. The lightweights, the middleweights and the heavyweights. Each character has their own advantages and disadvantages and it is up to you to find a character that suits you best.

There are 16 tracks to play on, and they are divided into 4 cups. Mushroom, Flower, Star and Special. You can play each cup on different engine speeds (50cc, 100cc, 150cc). The tracks are very well designed and the later ones can really get challenging. The first race, is Luigi's raceway. This isn't hard, and is basically an oval, with a tunnel. This is a good place to practice your driving skills. The characters have their own themed race tracks, such as Donkey Kong's Jungle Parkway, which is set in a jungle with a river and a cave. The difficulty of this game is generally quite easy, but it does get a lot harder when you choose 150cc.

Ahh, then we come to the weapons. When racing, to make it easier to stay ahead, you can get weapons from weapon boxes around the track. If you are coming first, you'll get a lousy weapon. If last, you'll get a great weapon. Some weapons are very good, like the Star, which makes you invincible for a short time, and the Lightning bolt, which zaps all the other players (unless they are invincible), making them small, and slower. There are your standard weapons like bananas and shells which can slow down someone if you aim it correctly, and there is a Boo, so you can steal someone else's weapon. Oh, and the AI opponents can use weapons, and they will.

If you want to practice on a track, you should go to Time Trials. Here, you can try and get the best time, and not have to worry about weapons and other racers. There is also a highly enjoyable Multiplayer mode. If you have two people playing, both of you can do the standard Grand Prix, just like in single player, and make it harder for the other person to get the trophy. Or if you have more playing, you can race against them on a track without the AI. Or, if you want to use weapons to their full potential, you should try out the battle mode, where you can drive around a small area, using weapons to hit people.

Lasting Appeal
There is a lot of racing to be done here. The single player racing mode should keep you going for quite a while. The Multiplayer is good fun and will always get a play when you have a few friends around. The battle mode is what seems to keep people coming back for more.

Sound

Basically the same annoying tunes that everyone used to sing along to on the SNES version.

Gameplay

The gameplay has not changed much really you progress through the Mushroom, Flower and Star cups followed by a special cup. The power ups again are all there in there glory with a few extras. As in the SNES version the one player mode is not what this game is about its the multiplayer and with now it being possible to have 4 players playing at one time the possibilities seem endless, oh but how wrong could you be. The first problem are the match races which are fairly entertaining with two players but add that to 3 or 4 and all of a sudden the game speeds up to an unnatural degree rendering impossible to control. The battle modes are now on three times bigger rendering them null and void because they are simply to big and you end up just racing around never getting anywhere. Add all that to the very very easy 1 player mode you are not left with much to go on.
