Sound

Now this is something! The sound chip on Dreamcast is great anyway, and it really shows here. Crisp sword clashes, wonderful speech, decent sound effects and a really pleasent score make this game an aural delight.
Shame about the rest, though :-)

Gameplay

The gameplay is by turns great and frustrating. The ability to switch between different characters at certain points, as well as the ability to control different party members at any point, is a refreshing twist. A flick of the shoulder button and you can play in a totally different style. The controls are intuitive and the menu sytem is quite easy to navigate. On the down side, with as simplistic a storyline as we have here, this can sometimes lead to feeling like it's a game on rails....
The frustration comes in the form of the graphics. The pre-rendered backdrops are quite pretty, but nothing we haven't seen on PlayStation Final Fantasy games before. The characters, too, are TINY (we are talking seriously small here) and this does interfere with the gameplay. What's the point of having a character on level 4002 with super powers to rival Miss Lynda Carter in Wonder Woman if you can't make out his hands?? This will definitely hamper your enjoyment of the game. All in all, the gameplay is solid, fluid and enjoyable, but can be a real bitch to use a lot of the time.

Sound

As all reviewers atest, the voices-acting is phenomenal, though visually the characters are caricatured marrionettes betraying more designer driven impulse than emotion. The background music is cinematic and suits the settings appropriately.

Gameplay

Gameplay consists of three elements: character-character interaction, character-time interaction, and character space interaction. For those of us who began this trip with Pong, we have seen these qualities gradually improve with the technology inherent in each platform. Silver pushes the envelope on character-character ("CC") interaction, literally forcing the storyline in certain directions in a certain time code. While this is minimally required of all RPGs, Silver seems a bit unwieldy offering less freedom of character interaction than previous platform's RPG's. The character-time level is outstanding in battle but poor in that sequential activity is forced much as the original Zelda. Character-space is the worst of the three. Although the game allows rapid movement via map, the map is small and contrived of few discrete elementals. An open space platform would greatly complement the game's outstanding real time efforts.

Sound

And on to the sound. Oh, my god. That's how I would describe it. There are hundred' of characther's and each has his/her own specific voice. Whether it's Silver's sinister laugh or David's defiant sppeches, you will find nothing wrong here. The music is also good as it helps to set the errie mood, but you'll be so focused on everything else, you may not even know the beauty behind the music.

Gameplay

The game play is the best of any Dreamcast RPG, and while that's not saying much, it ranks in my book with games like Final Fantasy and, yes, the almighty Zelda. The bosses range in difficulty as the game progresses and each enemy and boss has different stratagies to beat to beat them. It may take awhile to learn the controls in the heat of battle, it is not to difficult to bring the game down.

Summary

This game is cool. Like an adventure game, this grand tale is presented at the outset to create a clear purpose, and then each major plot point hinges on the accomplishment of a deed. In this case that deed is usually killing an end-level boss. The structure is entirely linear, and absent are the chance battle encounters that are the norm in RPGs. The standard character stats of an RPG are here, but they are fixed, and only increase at the end of each level, only according to the predetermined script. So, the absence of experience points that can be distributed and the lack of chance encounters eliminate the RPG gameplay dynamic of fighting numerous small battles in order to gain experience points and build a stronger character. For a whopping total of three adventures, David can add people to his party all of whom can be controlled individually. When controlling one party member, the others blindly follow and are all but useless in a fight, usually standing motionless unless attacked. Because the battles require your full attention and all your action game skills while you choose from a number of melee, range, and magical weapons.
