Sound

Music is sparse but when you do hear some it's that singer who used to be really famous, Montell Jordan. Unlike NBA2K1 he stadium ambience (i.e. Announcer, coaches, players, Intercom music) Is seriously lacking. The Announcer sounds very unenthusiastic as if he's "just there to do his job". The same can also be said for the commentating which reminds me of commentating from the Old NBA Jam Games at the arcade. The color commentary is not colorful and adds no insight to how the game is being played and the play-by-play is very basic. 2K1's commentating actually sounds like they are watching and getting into each game just as much as you are! PLayer chatter is horrible and is just too chessy and sterotypical throwing around too much unneccassary slang to make the game "hip". It's very weak stuff. 2K1's chatter will actually have you laughing at some of the stuff they say, just play a street game.

Gameplay

Hmmm Let's see, the bad definitely outweighs the good in this category. For one, the menu interface is totally screwed up. I had a hard time just trying to find the camera options. Not to mention how fustrating it was to have to load up evey single screen in this game. Load times need to be cut down. THIS IS PSX2 PEOPLE!! I'M TIRED OF THESE LONG A** LOAD TIMES! As for actual game play It was difficult at first to play because of that whack carema angle they decided to use as a default. What ever happened to the simple press or full court angles?? On Pro players will miss WAY too many baskets, especially the open ones. I'm sorry but Allen Iverson shouldn't have THAT much of a problem draining a 20 footer. I did however like some of the crossovers but most of the time they felt wierd because the pace of how the players moved seemed suspiciously choppy. The Game intros a completely whack seeing how every home team player runs onto the court hoping and bouncing around like they're high on speed or something. And what about the visiting team? Don't they deserve SOME sort of reconition or announcement before starting a game??A lack of Franchise or create a playe mode didn't help my feelings toward it much either. The gameplay as you can see left ALOT to be desired.

Summary

I was acctually looking at all the reviews and thinking to myself that I wasn't going to get this game because it got so many bad reviews. After my best friend told me that this game was GOOD I decided to take his word for it becasue we both have been playing NBA live since the first live came out and we've loved everyone of them. He told me that this was the best live ever. So I took his word on it. BOY was I glad. I thought that this was the best live yet!!! This game is REAL. You have to really work the offense and actually call plays in order to get open looks. In previous live games you could just run down the court and crossover and shoot. This is actually like playing a real live basketball game. The computer is SMART and is not so easily crossed over. You have to really do some fancy finger work for the computer to get lost. And even after that you only have a little while before it recovers!! For those of you that want to just pull up and shoot 3's with 3 people in your face or dunk with 3 dudes in the paint.....this game is not for you. This is a real live basketball game. Maybe those people should try NBA Street....I see that has good reviews...wonder why...For the real hardcore basketball live fans...NBA Live 2001 for the PSX2 is the best yet!!!

Sound

There is no denying that Live has always been the best of the best in this department, and it's easy to see why. The soundtrack, performed by Montel Jordan, is music to your ears on the menu and options screens. I simply loved it. The commentary by Don Poier and in-game analysis by Bob Elliott do the job nicely, but is not quite up to par with Sega's NBA2K series and not nearly as in-depth. As for the rest, screaming crowds, squeaking shoes, E.A.'s classic P.A. announcer and in-game trash talk, Live is still the ruler of the land. Crank this baby up.

Gameplay

NBA Live 2001 looks great, no doubt about it, but how does it play? Players that have played the series in the past, know what to expect and should be right at home with 2001. The control scheme is the same with the exception of the back-down button, (which by the way is a welcome addition). The feel of Live on the Playstation 2 seems responsive, but next to 2K1, it doesn't seem quite as tight as NBA2K1.

Shooting requires some major creativity by the game player. On harder levels, you're going to have to use the other buttons to get an open look. Simply stated, it's very difficult to make shots in Live 2001. Even with an open look, my players seemed to throw up bricks. The game also plays a bit slower than what most are accustomed to, so you'll need to hold the button down for a long second or two before releasing the shot at the top of the jump. This seemed to give the defense a significant advantage when blocking a shot. I feel that Live 2001 plays better as a 2 player game than a one player. The computer seems to know every move you make, because once you press that button, the computer adjusts accordingly.

Stealing may be a bit too easy. Don't be surprised if you're entire team averages 10 steals a game. Defensive rebounding is also an annoyance in Live 2001. How is it annoying? For starters, it's a rarity for your computer team-mates to rip down an offensive rebound. Unless you are controlling the player underneath, expect zero help from your team-mates. They seem to do a little better job on the offensive end, but sometimes I want to scream at the atrocious amount of rebounds the opponents get.

I prefer the free-throw system in Live over NBA2k1 because it's very challenging. You need to line up two cursors and players with cruddy free-throw %'s like Shaq and Dale Davis have to deal with fast cursors making things a bit tricky for the big guys in crunch time. If you play in rookie or starter modes, it's still too easy. Beef up the difficulty for the ultimate challenge at free-throws.

Getting around the menu screens are a bit on the confusing side. People that have played Madden will be scratching their heads trying to navigate around fluently within Live's confusing scheme. But as with any game, you'll get used to it.

Sound

Since when do basketball fans sound like a gallery at a golf tournament? The crowd is quiet and never has any emotion. The in-game sounds were taken right out of the PSOne versions of the game, even the same music riffs and lame "defense" chant. Announcing is average.

Hold on a sec....just had to check and see if I got the PSOne version by mistake...It can't REALLY be this bad can it?...Uh, it says PS2 on the disk. Oh my.
Avoid this garbage at all costs!!

Gameplay

The first thing I noticed was how unresponsive the game is. The poor framerate (more on that later) makes it difficult to control the players, buttons are unresponsive (I pass to an open man, press the button and he won't shoot...arrgh!) The ball physics are unrealistic. It seems like the ball moves too quickly when shot and rebounds always seem to bounce long no matter where the shot was from. The post-up game is useless (Shaq cannot back down some 3rd string center in the paint? C'mon, inexcusable!) The crossover never allows a player to drive to the hole even if your using Iverson. That ridiculous "push" move from old NBA Live versions is still available on defense(Is this NBA Jam?) At no point did I ever feel like I was playing a real basketball game. No realism whatsover. Inexcusable that this could be released on the PS2! Thank goodness NBA2K2 is coming this fall!
