Product Description

Sound

The sound is good from the start but after some hours of play you may want to get your C.D. player and listen to some tunes as you play the game because ther really isn't anything to listen to some the sounds can get old sometimes.

Gameplay

The gameplay is as real as it can get away from the real world. The game has a multitude of things to do from constructing trains in a train yard to running steam engine in the europena country. If you buy the game and you decide you want to do more go to a store such as Electronique Bontique or Gamestop The should have many add ons for routes and trains, or even scenery. This game is huge to a certain extinct I'm not going to say it can out do it' brothers / Sisters the Microsoft Flight Simulator series. Microsoft has a lot of improve ments to make for a second release of this game if they make one.

Summary

Disappointing. I expected more from Microsoft.

First of all, this IS NOT a game. It IS a simulator, much like MS Flight Simulator. There are no goals other than running the train, dropping off consists at appropriate locations, and doing this in a timely manner while staying within the rules of the road.

Most disappointing was with everything Microsoft put into the game, they left out one item that would have improved the game. THERE ARE NO PEOPLE!

It comes across as very empty, almost apocolyptic in it's presentation.

You can move thousands of tons of cargo from point A to point B but why? No one's there to receive it. You can even "ride" your train, and look at the very EMPTY passenger car.

Yes, you can run this simulator like a model railroad using your imagination to fill in the blanks but even model railroading has simulated people!

Sound

Weak. The sound simulations are inconsistant. Outside the train you'd expect to hear the horn and bells loud and clear (NOT). While the thrumming of the diesel and the chuffing of the steam is realistic and syncronized nicely the volume needs to be cranked up when observing from outside. DO NOT FORGET to turn the volume back down BEFORE going to internal views.

Gameplay

Technically this simulator is quite accurate, to a fault. Unless you're an Engineer (Railroad type) and are familiar with the rules of the road you can lose control of the train quickly and derail. Heaven forbid you take a turnout and end up facing the end of the track doing more than 30mph! Yes, braking is also realistic. It can take over a mile to stop a short train doing more than 30.

Generating your own route is possible but very very tedious and extremely complex. If you have less than 128M RAM and less than 600Mhz processing speed don't even bother. My 1.4GHz/512MB RAM bogs down with the terrain editor. Even a very short line (20 miles or less) can take up to a week to process and label. You're better off hiring a programmer to do this for you with all the time it takes.
