Summary

An excellent game for all of you old school gaming fans, but the thing with these types of games are that they are an aquired taste as far as games go. some people like them some don't but I like them. These games are fun, and enjoyable, they should keep you busy for quite awhile, and I have only unlocked 2 games from having save files on Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, and Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II. Most of the games have pretty much the same basis, run and jump, but I found this much more enjoyable that Mario for one word. Speed. While the speed may not be breathtaking, it still goes pretty fast. Another cool feature is that they give you some bonus features to look at, and stare awe-inpired on how much popularity the idea of the speedy blue hedgehog has. I had fun with this game, it is extremely fun, at least for me, I reccomend this game if you are a fan of 2-D side scrollers. Keep on rockin' Sonic!

Sound

The music is catchy, and the sounds blend in well. The music catches our emotions, holding them in place, and after the long battle across the level, it's just satisfying to hear the jingle at the end of it all. When you are running out of air underwater, the music will change to a fast paced music sample, then you realize, 'I'm screwed.' The sound effects range over boings, to bashes, to pops, to zooms. All over are there cool sound effects, and the Game Over music isn't agrivating, it's more like a comforting, 'Oh, well... Better luck next time.' kind of sound. My personal favorite, as after you beat Sonic 2, there is a dramatic falling scene with almost sad music in the background. I just love that scene. It just wouldn't be the same if there had'nt been that wonderful, emotional music. After you finish any of the games, you'll be treated from you hard work with a wonderful ending sequnce with beautiful music.

Gameplay

Gameplay is simplistic, addictive, and fun.You'll eat away the hours, and don't think that just because it's a 2-d side scroller, that it'll be cake to beat. It actually gets quite challenging, and as much of a challenge as the boss fights are, they are still fun, so even through the toughest times of the game, you'll still be having lots of fun. Another good element is the speed. you can speed headfirst down steep inclines, and you will sometimes actually go off of the screen, you're going so fast! The ring system is nothing out of the ordinary for this certain genere, but it is just better than Mario, because you can actually get a second chance at life. Something else you can do, is if you need to take a break form playing, you can chill to movies, comic covers, and more.

Summary

2D on a full blown 3D only 128 bit Gamecube can
it be possible? It looks like it can but I think
they must had to emulate the genesis or use only
5 percent of the Gamecubes total power. I think these game are great for people to relive the genesis days. People got to relive Super NES on Gameboy advance. So sega gave the Cube a chance to bring people down memory lane for once. Athough
these game probaly been more at home on gba becuase it's a true 16 bit system. Gameboy advance
did get sonic but not the classic genesis ones.
It looks like the game are anchored at home now unless you get a moniter for the cube. Sonic
"Mega"(drive?) Collection is good for younsters
who missed out on the genesis days. Wow first they get Super NES on GBA now Genesis on GC.
Our youngters really gettint to experince the 16-bit age. The Megadrive is the japanese Genesis.
Keep in mind I'm rateing to the Gamcubes
maximum abilities so graphics/sound get 1 point
but 5 for overall because of fun factor and
graphics/sound don't make a game fun. It's reliving the 16-bit TV console age and new generation of gamers experiencing it as well count as the fun factor too.

Summary


If there's anything I've learned having been a devoted videogamer for the last 15-16 years its that much like the latest fashion trends, nostalgia very much rules, and everything travels full-circle. However, of the nostalgia 'trips' I've partaken in with regards to videogames, most of them have been nothing short of disappointing. It seems that the 'golden ticket' of promised gaming splendour turns out to be either an edited emulation that isn't the original, you pick up a package of 10 games of which only 1 or 2 can be labelled 'classics', or you simply face the biggest kicker of them all - that time has not been kind to the game, and the once-glorious piece of gameplay you rejoiced in is nothing now but a jaded, unforgivable hash of sprites and slowdown.

Yup, nostalgia. Its a shallow harsh word.

With that in mind I happened upon this package and decided, having read reviews that spoke of how good the games inside had been handled, to gamble and give it a try.

And am I glad I did!!

I won't say much about how great the Sonic games were in their heyday, other than 1, 2, 3 and Sonic vs. Knuckles were the main reasons that in my early twenties I lost so much sleep!!

Anyway!!

What we have here is a package of some of Sonic's finest moments on the Megadrive (as said before, Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Sonic and Knuckles), with some different kind of games infused with Sonic (Sonic Spinball, 3D Flickies Island, Robotnik's Mean Bean machine), and some 'bonus' items and games to pick up as well (the ability to play Sonic 2 & 3 as Knuckles, the bonus game from Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and complete versions of the classics Flicky and Ristar).

As you can see there's a lot for your money here - and then some!!

However, if it atounds how much is actually here then what really amazes is how well the games are done. Playing the first 4 again, I couldn't believe the fact that in the effort to make them 'real', nothing had been changed. No resolution changes, no music updates, no new flash intros, not a jot. Its almost as if Sega melted the original cartridges down and cast a disc out of the resultant alloy!!

To put a blunt point across about how accurate the games are, the level select/debug factors are still in place, and yes, the 'SEEEE-GA' singing with Sonic in various poses is at the start of most of the games!! There's even a choice to check-out the original in-box manuals for each of the games for crying-out loud!!

But none of this would be complete if the games didn't actually play well, and I am so very happy to report that yes, after all this time Sonic still rocks!! The variety of gameplay on offer is sheer delight (you have pinball, 3d adventure and puzzle here too by the way, and if you unlock more there's shoot'em up and more platform for you!!). Not one of the games on offer are what you might call 'duff'.

Couple this additionally with more history, art, videos and yet more mcguffins than a special edition 4-disc DVD of your favourite movie and you have a piece of essential history as well as a seriously playable package.

So there you have it. Sega have raised the bar on 'retro' compilations and scored with a massive and wonderful package. it remains to be seen whether Nintendo will give us a Mario package (could you Nintendo? Could you please!!), but until that time this is the best reason to get 'old' and reminisce once-again, or simply delight in what is total fun!!

P.S. Sega, are we going to have Nights soon? Howabout the older Phantasy Star titles? Please

Sound


Once-again, the sound is exact, but I have no qualms about age here!!

Sonic came from the time when sampling voices and pop songs was still a matter of eating memory in a large way, and so writing actual music was very much in order.

And what music!!

I'm humming the industrial sector tune from Sonic 2 as I write this, I can't believe how gorgeous the tune from the starlight levels of Sonic 1 still is - why didn't Sega enclose a cd of the best of Sonic?

Sound fx are a little muted, but still stick out as being created out of being important as information e.g. when Sonic is underwater, you know by the tings and gulp soound that he's losing or gaining oxygen, and when gains a shield the low-pitched 'poing' sound!!

Nothing really suffers here - Sonic Spinball has brash music and effects that reflect a pinball machine, Robotnik's mean bean machine seems ordinary but the music is pleasant without being annoying, hence there's no lowpoint with the music and effects - it all really works!!

I play modern games quite often and moan about the lack of decent sound, in woe because of games creators either imbuing their titles with current pop acts and samey effects, or horrid guitar-rock that never ends, or even worse low-end warbles that you quite often can't even hear to acknowledge how bad they are!! Well, here's a lesson in how to create the perfect game sound - WRITE some decent music, and look to effects to help the player as well, not just as a 'cute' moment!!

Class tunes, great effects. Sega, a music cd please?!!

Gameplay


Sonic was always a different platformer to the Mario's, Alex Kidd's and Wonderboys out there, mainly due to once asset: SPEED. Granted, eventually taking the levels slowly and picking up every ring and chaos emerald was the key to success, but belting through the levels, watching the beautifully drawn and animated landscapes fly-by, well, its still a rush now that takes some beating.

On the Gamecube the controls have been reworked to a minimal level, but by and by they work beautifully. One major asset to behold too is that you can play the games with the analogue stick, which has been given a preset of control far more comforting than thought allowed.

As for the other games on the disc, Sonic Spinball is an addictive take on Pinball that will keep you returning for the fact its so tricky, 3D Flickies island is an engaging isometric variant of the previous Sonic games, and possibly the one obsurity on offer initially, Robotniks' mean bean machine, is a very fun puzzle game that only suffers in that you've seen this game a lot more than you should have in the form of Bust a Move and the like. Lastly, of the hidden oddities, Flicky is probably one of the best Megadrive games EVER(!!), a simple platformer with simple but majorly addictive gameplay, and Ristar a very old (think Master System!!) but very fun shoot'em up.

Of the above games I've mentioned, what is amazing that in the confines of their ages they haven't really aged a jot, and that's down to one thing: good, simple, honest playability. Forget complex fighting moves, forget that limit break, forget it all - just play the games!!

I do have a couple of criticisms to make however of the above. Number one is that other than Sonic 3, none of the games have an ability to save a position to a level - however, these games were designed to be originally played for hours at a time, not months, and surely adding a save would relegate them to being beaten within a few days in total. The other criticism comes with the fact that as games they are whole and they play well, but with the likes of Mario Sunshine and Starfox Adevntures with their enhanced gameplay and graphics, you may well be left cold by the simplicity of these games, but that I feel is a matter of choice, and hence since I have enjoyed these games again so much, I feel a (5) mark is in order.

Summary

As strange as this sounds, I think the "Sonic" Mega Collection is a must have for your "Nintendo" Gamecube! Never thought you'd hear those 2 words in the same sentence did you?!?!

This disc contains perfect clones of the original Sega Genesis games: Sonic the Hedghog, Sonic the Hedghog 2, Sonic the Hedghog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. (There are some other games and features, however these three alone are the main reason to pick up the title.) And I sincerely mean PERFECT clones! Your Gamecube is not simply reading some version of the original Genesis cartridge format. For example: If you are hurt by an enemy and suddenly 85 rings blast in every direction, the "Genesis hardware" will actually slow down to an inferior Super Mario World pace! It's amusing to see the powerful Gamecube mimic this attribute. If you're an older gamer that lived through the Sega Genesis era then you'll instantly be transported back to the early 1990's. If you're a new gamer, you'll be introduced to a few predecessors of all modern video games.

Sound

This is (in my opinion) superior to the sound in most modern games. No realistic sound effects here, only the infamous beeps and bops that became a trademark of the term "video game". This is the way video games are supposed to sound!!! And an honorable mention goes out to the catchy tunes in the original Sonic game.

Suggestions: Ok, there are two reasons I would not recommend the purchase of this title:

1. If you have a Genesis with these games already, save you're money. There are literally no differences between the Genesis and Gamecube versions!

2. Don't pay more than $30.00! Even though I raved about these games in my review, they are several years old. You can probably even find a used Sega Genesis system to play them for less than $30.00.

Gameplay

I suggest using the directional pad while controlling Sonic. This will give you a more complete experience of the game. Do you remember when you only needed one control stick/pad to play video games? No need for the C stick in this 2 dimensional platformer my friend. (The gameplay would recieve a perfect 5 if there was a way to use a Genesis controller on the Gamecube.)
