Sound

Sound was nothing special, yes the crowd has good reactions, yes the sound of tackles are outstanding, but, the commentary is awesome the first two or three times you play it. But I am ready to break something if I hear Madden say, "Now that's the sort of thing that drives me crazy, why pass on third dow if you don't throw it past the marker?" one more time. I swear 90% of the time Madden says that on a pass play that's complete on third down but is not past the marker. Which will happen alot during a foot ball game.

Gameplay

Gameplay is good. The controls are kind of hard to master at first, espicially if you're used to X-Box or PS2, my friends hate using the controller, but they've gotten better at it. I like the nice fluid running style, it seems that if you're runnig at top spped and are tackled you usually fall forward. The running game is spectacular except for one flaw; the running back has a tendancy to go through a wide open hole only to be tackled just by brushing up next to a player which can be a lifesaver on defense but gets alittle more than annoying on offense. The passing game is just passing, nothing more and nothing less. There is usually one open guy on every play. Now defense is a whole 'nother story. Tou are very limited to what you can do on defense because you are basically limited to playing on the line. If you play as a CB, or SS chances are you'll screw up and they'll throw right by you. So you have to rley on the CPU on pass defense. And there has been more than one ocassion where I want to throw the controller through the screen for letting the offense get a first down on 3rd and long.

Sound

Madden 2002's only flaw is the sond. The menu music get's boring and repetitive. Pat and John sound better than in previous games, but some comments also get repetitive. This game needs a livelier soundtrack. Pat needs some Ritalin.

Gameplay

Gameplay is excellent. On the field, controls are smooth and play is fluid. The game flows very nicely, and stat updates fly on and off, with particular relivance. Off the field, Franchise mode is the best team-management mode available for ANY sports game (except the ones with eXtreme in the title, just kidding). Managing a team was never so easy or fun. Don't like your current rosters? Run a "fantasy draft." Still son't like them? Sign Free Agents, release bums, trade players, or just wait for the season to end and draft new talent. That's not all. You can also create your own custom team, with any color combination for its uniform, as well as name the team, its town, its stadium, and what type of stadium and climate it has.

Sound

In the final year of Madden and Summerall, they sure did a great job. This is the best announcing I have ever heard and with the special announcements over the PA, the sound is quite enjoyable. The easter eggs on holidays really impressed me. I'm not a fan of the menu rap music, but it is no big deal. The crowd really gets pumped and chants in big time scenarios again making the playing experience a grand event.

Gameplay

Unlike many other sports games with very difficult controls to remember and master, I jumped right in to Madden and mastered them within a few days. The franchise mode is absolutely INCREDIBLE! It will stay exciting and keep you going for months. The off-season moves have hooked this rabid football fan and won't let ya down. The menus include tons of stats, season awards, and everything you need to satisfy your football needs. The #1 reason to buy this game lies in the greatest franchise mode I have ever played.

Sound

Very good. It envelopes you in the football experience. To be honest, you are so concentrated on the game that you don't notice it that much. That is until Madden makes some jab at your last decision. ;-)

Gameplay

The controls can be intimidating and tough to figure out at first, but once you get the basics down in practice, the true beauty of it all hits you. Soon, you find yourself effortlessly making a smooth 45 yard pass to your open receiver. Kicking is fairly easy to get used to, and extra points are a piece of cake. Weaving between defenders is a great rush, and nothing's better than outrunning 3 St. Louis Rams and diving into the endzone for a TD. Playing defense gets old after a while, and what you can do is rather limited. I mean, as John Madden himself says in the game: "There's no defense for a perfect pass."

Sound

Sound is decent, the announcers are what you expect, and madden has his trademark "Mr Obvious" remarks. I personally dont enjoy watching games announced by Madden, as I think he is a has-been, but hey, its a madden game so let him stretch his glory.

Gameplay

Gameplay is the root of my frustration. In this game, I never feel totally in control, I feel that the outcome of the game in season mode is calculated, and you are at the mercy of what the results of the calculations predict.

I started a season with the Dolphins, a favorite team of mine. An overall of 85, they lack in offense. First game...47-3 loss, second game 21-0 loss, third game 14-10 loss, and on and on till I had a season similar to that of this years Lions. Losing is not the frustrating part, the frustrating part is the way I lost. Everytime, I had little control of the outcome. The passing game is mediocre at best, so I ran a lot. Many times I would gain huge ground, only to have my defense turn off within 20 yards of a touchdown. When I did score (which happened 2 times in the season), I would have holding penalties against me. Most of my scoring was done with field goals.

I questioned myself, I thikn Im probably doing something wrong. But I cant figure out why my NFL2K1 games go more realistically than do these madden games. If I truly sucked at football games (which I might), then shouldnt I also suck at NFL2K1? And shouldn't I be losing to my friends who are good madden players instead of winning?

So I ran some experiments...the first was to start a game, then restart after the first round of scoring to see what would happen. What I found was that 5 out of 5 times, the coin toss would have EXACTLY the same results, and the scores would happen in exactly the same way from the same yardage, regardless of what defense I chose. In this case, I chose to receive. The second play woould ALWAYS be a turnover, whether fumble or interception. The cpu would then march up the field with 9 plays, then they would kick a 47 yard field goal. Every time.

I then ran a second experiment...I chose a good team with a good offense and started a season. What I found was I could easily get down the field, my offense would just dominate the other team, but once I got within 10 yards, my offense could not do anything. They would drop balls, miss catches, fumble on runs, QB would get sacked. This wouldnt be suspect if the other 90 yards of play were as difficult, but instead, I could get downfield without having to go through a 2nd down. Hmmmm.

EVERY game I would dominate in all stats, yet I could not score to save my life. Most of the time I was triple the yardage as the opposing team, but their score was triple mine.

I went through training mode 2 times, but breezed through that. It seems that the programming for how the cpu chooses plays is based on a percentage...it has say a 90% chance of choosing the exact defensive play that will counter exactly the play that I called, the other 10% of the time it wouldnt and I could gain. This is probably how all football games work, but in madden it is so blatently obvious that it really ruins the whole "in control" thing I mentioned above.

I really want to like the game, I really do. But instead of enjoying the game, I end up frustrated. Maybe Ill give is some more time, but I doubt it.

Sound

The sound is solid. Nothing spectacular. I am not the biggest John Madden fan, and his commentary gets a little old and repetitive. It seems that there may be a little more, or at least newer, comments than on the PS2. It seemed that they used a lot of the commentary from 2001 on the 2002 PS2 version. The crowds respond when you pump them up on defense, and react to the play on the field, which is all you can really ask for from a first offering on the system. The big hits sound good, especially combined with guy's helmet flying off.

Gameplay

The gameplay is outstanding. While some of the features and animations in NFL 2K2 for the PS2 are better (notably the way a running back will slip past a lineman who is blocking instead of "Mario running"), overall Madden on GC has it beat. While I was cruising through a season with the Steelers, sitting at 11-2, I had an awful all around game against Baltimore, with multiple turnovers and dropped passes, missed blocks, etc., when I had easily defeated Baltimore earlier in the season. I don't know if the computer will randomly "make" you have a bad game, but it was frustratingly real in how a team might have a letdown.

Sound

Sound is slightly inferior to other aspects of the game. All the required grunts, cheers and head cracks are there, but all the sounds get repetivive, and the crowd sometimes cheers in a monotonous, "waves crashing on a beach" way. Madden and Summerall's commentary is convincing enough, but started to get seriously redundant after just ten hours of play (yes John, I realize that catching the ball is "important").
Still, the audience does react dynamically to the situation, and the commentators only rarely sound like they are reading a script instead of reacting spontaneously to the action on the field.

Gameplay

I usually play Acclaim's Quarterback Club series, which is heavy on graphics and light on gameplay. Madden is heavy on both. The running game is superb, and it's very neat to be able to shake of defenders if you have the skill, momentum, etc. Passing is quite difficult for amateurs like me, but I expect to improve with time. Gameplay-wise, the best football game I've ever played with my limited experience.

Sound

The sound on Madden 2002 is awesome as well. The crowd gets up during crucial parts of the game, and quiets down when the offense is taking the field. Whatever you do, dont try to pump up the opponents crowd.....they'll boo you right out of the stadium. Its always better to have you system hooked up to surround sound speakers, but I think even the tiny speakers can give a great effect.

Gameplay

Gameplay is much the same on Gamecube as it is on the PS2. With the settings on rookie a new player not familiar with EA games can easily get accustomed to he flow of things. The experienced players also have their job cut out for them because the higher levels are very tough. The computer puts up a very strong opposition so be ready to come out playing. The controls are awkward at first, but after a few minutes of playing everything seems to just fall into place. All the teams are there, including the Texans and a few World League teams. All in all Madden 2002 has great gameplay.
