Summary I hate giving anything a perfect score, but if any game for the GameCube deserves one, Super Smash Brothers Melee is that game. BUY IT!Sound I found the score and sound effects in this game to be so good that I ordered the orchestrated version on CD from Nintendo Power and I still listen to it. Simply the best.Gameplay I picked this game up when I first bought my GameCube back in 2001, and even then, when I was just a lad of thirteen, I was utterly stunned by the incredible gameplay that this game offers. It is flawless.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. This is a great and easy-to-learn fighting game. 6 years ago, I got a N64 and Super Smash Brothers was my first game. Now, Christmas of 2003 I get a gamecube with Super Smash Brothers Melee as my first game. Much better than the original. I hardly take this out of my gamecube! All gamecube ownwers must have this game! This game has started a lot of debates with my brother and friends and I.(ex. Princess Zelda can beat the crap out of Princess Peach. It's true! Princess Zelda has the power of three Goddesses.)Sound I love it. These tunes stuck in my head the first time I heard them.Gameplay Great! More characters are here. Including Ganondorf, Dr. Mario, the ancient Ice Climbers and the hardly seen Fire Emblem Brothers Prince Marth and Roy. You can do alot more. Like air dodging and catch items. Even a new Adventure mode makes this game a platformer to. Some stages now move, making it more hard to win. And it is much harder to win on the highest difficulty level.Would you like to Comment? Summary First off, in late 2001, when the three console kings were all on the market, I chose PlayStation 2. My friend purchased a Gamecube instead. One of the three games he had was Super Smash Brothers Melee, and how ironic it seems that it was the only game we played on his Gamecube. He didn't even bother bringing the case to put it in, he kept it in the Gamecube without ever taking it out. We played this game tons of times, and we played multiplayer with 4 people at my cousin's house. It is, hands down, the best fighting game I've ever played. We even held our own little tournaments, and wrote down on pieces of paper, tournament style, who won and who was next. In all, I estimate I played about 5 or so hours of this game. But that will all change. Two years later, I am getting ready to purchase a Gamecube, along with it one game - Super Smsh Bros. Melee. It's that good.Sound Mwahahaha.... sorry. I was remembering the sound Pikachu makes when he flies off of the stadium. The sound isn't the best part of the game, and neither is the music. For those of you who dont like the repetitive theme song of Mario, u may want ot see if there's a sound effects and music effects option where you can turn the sound effects up and the music down. But the sound didn't bother me, because I was to occupied trying to cream my friend's character. If you want a good laugh, turn up the sound and knock Mario off the stadium. Mama Mia!!!Gameplay The controls are great for button mashers, yet great for true born fighters. If someone is new to the game, they can still whup some butt, and if someone likes memorizing button combonations, or has a very good hand-eye coordination, then they will also enjoy this game. I like how there are unlockable characters, and attainable trophies. This game unlocks the true potential of Gamecube: playing games. There are so many mini games in Super Smash Bros. Melee, even the end credits has a shooter mini game. I simply like the game for its continuous, easy gameplay.Would you like to Comment? Summary This game is basically a new and improved sequel to the older one for n64.Sound sound can get repetitive, but the rest of the game more than makes up for it.Gameplay With only 8 buttons and two important control sticks, this game is very easy to play with. It has new features from the old one including-new characters, such as pichu or the paper-thin Mr. Game and Watch -A brand new adventure mode -51 event matches, from the crazy hand to giga bowser -the all new coin match, a competition for coins, and the homerun contest. -new stages -an all new trophy system. some trophies are as easy as winning it in the lottery, and some require near impossible, like getting all 249 possible bonus's -different taunts for some charaters the one player places don't use the c-stick, but in vs mode the c-stick is your best friend. hidden stages and characters make this game challenging. can you unlock all 25 charcters and acess all-star mode? there are game secrets, like the giant kirby in adventure mode, or the crazy hand in classic mode. a really complex and awesome game. this game took time to make, and it shows. Summary A game that was better than the first and thats pretty hard! The new characters are so cool (ex. Roy) my favorite is even new! The only one I think is dumb is the last one you get. Some of the charaters are easy to get but some are even impossible.Sound I really can't complain!Gameplay The game play is probably the best i've ever seen in a fighting game since mortal combat 4. Its not at all hard to use power up attack unless you don't have the proper controller.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary This has to be one of the best games I have ever played. There are tons of improvements over the original Super Smash Brothers including: 51 exciting event matches, ton of new unlock able characters (I won't spoil it for any of you cheat-haters.) Overall the game is excellent in all areas and if you don't have the game yet you should buy it now!!!Sound Sound is great for the most part, with songs from classic Mario, and yoshi games. However after awhile the songs get extremely repetitive and you might find yourself mumbling the songs in your sleep. The song on Kongo Jungle is particularly annoying, and I urge you to mute the volume before beginning the course.Gameplay The game play is great. None of the moves are hard to execute which I feel has been a major flaw in many fighting games. Every character has his own unique moves as well as moves it shares with all the other characters. Multi Player mode is entertaining, and you can have up to four players playing at once. The Single Player mode features Adventure, and Classic mode, which both feature challenges which are completely different (classic mode is more fighting, and Adventure mode is more exploration)Would you like to Comment? I still play it often even after three years.Sound I loved the medly of different songs from various games.Gameplay Flawless gameplay. The controlls were perfectly executed, and were easy enough to use.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. In my opinion, it is much improved since the original. With triple the amount of N64 characters, and double new stages, this game had me jumping out of my seat. *Still can't put it down, even after a year*Sound The sound is fair. With a sound for every movement, it kept me entertained. The only problem is that, after a while, the annoything "ahhhhh" sound from people dying gets annoying.Gameplay Considering how bland the original Smash game was, this was a major improvement. I couldn't stop playing... not without unlocking another character. And with the special details, such as Very Hard, Hard, Med., Easy, and the 11 original characters... wow! What a buy!Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. There are a lot more characters to pick from than the original N64 version. There several ways to play. The Mulitplayer version is a blast. Your main goal is to beat the Master hand with all the characters.Sound The sound is good. There is not much to say about sound. It is just good.Gameplay The gameplay rocks!!!!Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Rating Reviewed By OwenFrom Seattle Washington Review Date 05/16/2003 Overall Rating ![]() 5 of 5 Rate this review? Summary This is a really cool game that is a must-get with all GameCube owners. The losers who say that this game is crap are crap themselves, because it is a classic, just like the first SSB. Also, those who say it is just like the first one got issues as well, regardless of the fact there are a couple new characters. This games fighting system changes from a mainly strategy in the first one to a action/quick thinking strategy game. First of all, I would like to point out one fact that nobody seems to understand about. This is about the difference between link and young link (Sorry to spoil 1 new character for you hardcore non-cheating character unlockers). They are NOT exactly the same, and not only because of the fire arrows link has. Young link is CONSIDERABLY quicker, and has a HIGHER Up-B move making him an improvement to Link altogether.Sound Sound is TIGHT. Some songs are left they way they were back in the 80's, and some are upgraded so they sound like a current nintendo song. Overall, the sounds in this game are also cool, and so are taunt sounds (UNLESS you keep taunting over and over again). Again, a Must-get game that is a classic, a game that, in essence, never gets boring.Gameplay Gameplay in this game is pretty dang awesome, not only because there are no complicated moves (Like in Street Fighter, Mortal Combat ect.) and it is easy to become decent. The moves are simple 2 button commands, a direction and A at the same time, or B at the same time. Not that difficult, you people who posted reviews saying it was A and B with C-up. Come on, if you hate it, then you hate it, but dont make up crap like that.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary This game is obviously one of the best games of its time with its huge variety of characters and perfect graphics. Super Smash Brothers Melle also contains hundreds of unlockable features to keep your ego fueled. It also has one of the greatest fighting systems known to men with its easy-to-learn controls.Sound Sound is just like any other game. It mainly only depends on your speakers.if you have surround sound ur in for a real treat but TV speakers are just like anything else. The music is also perfectly engineered to fit the moments, if your on a mario stage they'll have morio music, etc.Gameplay Super Smash Brothers Melee is an overall amazing game. It has the most intense battles you will ever encounter, and will keep you o the edge of your seat with its extremely smart AI. After you've had your share of fun with single player(which you'll probably never get bored of), you still have the world of multiplayer to explore with your friends.Would you like to Comment? A great fighting game with 24 charecters that takes the cake away from Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter. This game is non-stop fun that has hours of gameplay. Not only that, but if you like challengening games you will love this game. It is definatelly worth buying.Sound This game has music from many good games(even a Japenese one) so this is hard. Some of it, like Zelda music, is good. Some of it, Earthbound music, is bad.Gameplay This game has hours of fun packed into it. There are many charecters such as Mario(Mario), Link(Zelda), Samus(Metriod) and Pikachu(Pokemon) just to name a few. Back to the length, you need to play the game four 18 hours just to unlock Mewtwo! Talk about long! This game has a unique new mode, Adventure, that you must play through levels to beat. Like I said earlier, this game is Awesome.Would you like to Comment? I'm a gamer from the old days, and as I get older, it's hard to find the time to even play crappy games. So you can understand why addictive games tend to piss me off...but in a good way. This game is as addictive as it gets. I go to turn off the system and the little voice in my head says, "Oh just play one more game...you may unlock something!" I just bought this game a few days ago and have played it ever since. I know, I know it came out a year ago, but some games get passed over sometimes. I guess the anxiousness of playing Metroid and Zelda kinda overwhelmed me. Anyways, let's head to the review... Sound I'm not a big fan of music being played when I'm in a fighting game. I'm more into the sound effects than heariing some lame rap song. The effects are great and sound even better through a stereo receiver.Gameplay How easy can it get? Two buttons! There's none of that RIGHTARROW,LEFTARROW,UP,UPDOWN crap that you get in other fighting games. Who the hell remembers all of those combos anyways? How good of a fighter game can it be if you have to pause and look at a cheat sheet (psst Tekken). Now don't get me wrong, I love a good fighter game, but this is unique because it is so fast paced that I don't even think that you would have enough time to pull off huge combos. The gameplay is well made and to alot of people's surprise is infact pretty deep. Pulling off a perfect combination of upward attack followed closely by a smash move to send your opponent soaring is masterful. That last hit will make you smirk with evil intentions. There's just something about little puffy pink Kirby pulling out a massive hammer and smashing enemies. Speaking of characters, did I mention that unlocking characters becomes an obsession? Try this on for size...14 characters with 11 to unlock. Not to mention, unlockable levels and a huge assortment of game modes. Safe to say, get the dog some food, the children some milk and the wife something shiny, because you'll wan to play this for awhile. Would you like to Comment? Then I came back to this game. This game is the best game for the GameCube. It's the most fun party game ever. If it isn't the best game ever, it's only because Zelda lives forever.Sound The Sound is good. It's got a wide, wide variety of music, including the stupid DK Rap. Gotta love it.Gameplay The Gameplay is very simple, allowing you to use the basic buttons to play the game in the beginning. Eventually however, it is imperative that you learn how to dodge, roll, recover, and anything you can to survive. Yeah, it takes a little time in the beginning, but you'll find yourself suckered into it after only 10 minutes of gameplay.Would you like to Comment? Summary Super Smash Bros. Melee is an awesome game (the fact that i got it free with the GameCube sweetend the deal). For all you people who didn't buy this game when it was $50, you can now buy at the more affordable price of $30. This fighter has it all. Top-notch gameplay, numerous modes, graphics that blows all other first-gen GC games out of the water, and one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a video game. Plain and simple, if you own a GameCube, this masterpiece is a must-buy.Sound Nintendo gave the same royal treatment with the music. Everey song is orchestrated to perfection (except the DK Rap, which I can't stand). Whoever hired the musicians earns a raise. All of the retro tunes are very catchy, and match the game's settings perfectly. I once hummed the Fountain of Dreams (KIrby's Dreamland) song all day. This is a movie-quality soundtrack. :)Gameplay At it's heart, SSBM is a no-holds barred fighting game. An absoleutly brilliant, beautiful, challanging and just plain fun no-holds barred fighting game. Each character (25 in all) has their own set of moves and special moves. The main goal is to beat the stuffing out of the other fighters until they're weak enough to hit them off of the (suprisingly very large and BEAUTIFUL)stages. Normally after executing a move, special move, or Smash (a more powerful standard attack executed by holding a certain direction on the control stick and the A button) your opponent is sent flying upwards. This can make up for countless combos to beat up your opponent without their feet touching the ground. Luckily, if you're the one in the air (and your damage meter isn't to high), you can move either left or right to avoid taking damage. There are about a bazillion modes in SSBM. In single player mode, You have classic, adventure and all-star mode (which can be unlocked later). Multiplayer has an endless amount of modes which I'll let you explore for yourself. Probably one of the most unique aspects of this game is the trophies. For each fight you take part in (whether it be single or multiplayer)you're awarded with coins based on how well you do. You can use these in a lottery in which you have a certain percent of getting a new trophy depending how many coins you put in. Triggering events in the game can also earn you trophies as well. There are about 300 trophies of all things Nintendo fromm the familiar (Mario) to the type that make you go "HUH?" (Ayumi Tachibana). Fortunately, each trophy comes with a background about the character and the game they starred or co-starred in. There are a ton of other fantastic options (Sound Test cough, cough)to this gameplay-rich masterpiece, but I probably don't have enoug room to mention even half of them.Would you like to Comment? Summary This game is one of a kind. This game has no equal and one of the most popular games ever.I don't have anything to say but... WOW! I am an old pro at this game and i don't think that anyone can beat me! But i still would like to see how good you are compared to me! If there would be any challengers, please email me. Sound The sound gets boring after you play it as long as i have. I liked the sound alot, but after a long time, it got boring. I still like almost all of the other music, though.Gameplay The Gameplay is just so easy to use. The controllers are sweet. The characters are easy to controll (well some of them). I despise those who hate this game. If they want to see if they can beat me at this game, i would like to see them try.Would you like to Comment? For all the other SSBM fans out there I don't have to tell you that, you already know that first hand. For anyone who isn't interested or nevr even heard of it (which is impossible seeing as how you made it to this website), you don't know what you are missing.Sound It was like I was there.Gameplay As far as the actual gameplay goes, well, let's just say that basically your stuck in an area with characters that you grew up with. To describe it would be to put it down because words alone could never fully describe the greatness of this game. Imagine taken Super Mario Brothers, the Donkey Kong series, Metriod, The Legend of Zelda series, the F-Zero games, StarFox, Mr. Game and Watch, a whole handfull of Pokemon', the Ice Climbers, Kirby, Marth and Roy, and anyone else I forgot, and playing all those games at once.Would you like to Comment? The only down side is they need more. More levels, charactors, event matches, single and multiplayer challenges and the ability to play online for free.Sound The sound is awsome. everything sounds realistic. And the score is superb as well. they really out did their selves this time coming from the first one.Gameplay The game is really easy to learn. Only 2 buttons for attacking. It's really smooth going no breaks in the middle of the game. Nothing like Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. I just don't like it when a Bo-bomb decides to fall right when you release your smash attack and blows you away and not them and you have 32% damage. Or when you pick up the hammer and use it, at the end under the stats it says Stale moves and all you used was the hammer and hit them once in single player classic mode.Would you like to Comment? Summary All I can say is that if it goes out onto the internet when the connection come out it will be a very popular game and will never loes fasionSound The sound is great and can't be missed i like captain falcons racing stage music as it is the best stage anyway. This game is as good with it's sound as it is with it's gameplayGameplay The game play is Super Kool and the new charaters are very good some of the moves like Yoshis egg rool are preety dumb but my fav charater is Yoshi and i have never been beaten when i use him (not even comps)if you dis this game you are a fool and have no tasteWould you like to Comment?
