The one thing that has me baffled is the fact that although it is called Mace Griffin BOUNTY HUNTER, i found myself just running around killing everone, not hunting anybody except for the occasional boss. I think the game should have been called Mace Griffin: Obliterator. Despite all of the negative things in my review, you'll be surprised at my rating!Sound The voices were all the same. Each speices had its own voice. Valekiens: High pithced, very annoying, makes it fun to kill them. Jaldari:Low pitched, supposed to scare me, makes me laugh insted. Human: Either a perverted russians voice or a talkative american voice. The music, which there are only about 5 songs, is very repetetive. I liked how it got louder when enemies were around though. The weapon sounds were okay, but not liud enough. The sniper rifle does not sound like a real silenced weapon, it just mimicks all other games. A real silenced weapon is still kinda loud. The explosions were the best part of both the graphics and sound.Gameplay The AI could have been better, since most of the time they just sat out in the open, cursing me. As for the weapons, KICK ASS!!!!!!! My favorite was the plasma machine gun. For me, i found the game a little too short for my taste, considering i beat halo 2 in 3 days. Also, the physics were a little off. Getting hit with a rocket directly doesn't nessecerily make you explode into chunks, more like just blow a ton of body parts off of you. The space missions were a cool feature, but there could have been a few more missle varieties, and maybe one more laser. The shield is utterly useless, and health went down a little too fast. Also, the cutscenes kinda sucked. The characters had no original movements. It was almost like after one cutscene the game just takes the characters and places them in a different place, with the same movements. Also, when some of the characters talked, their mouths did not move. The electro gun thingy is useless until the last few levels, when you fight the watchers. The levels seemed too repetetive. It was like when you finished a level, before the next one started, it was taken and changed a little bit. Also, mace ran a little too fast when crouched. I also noticed my enemies could roll when i could not. Also, i notcied that when a door opened with an enemy on the other side, he would always know i was coming. He would fire when the door was about halfway open and he would always hit me. One thing that bothered me was that enemies were so tough in the actual game, but in the cutscenes, when people got shot, they died from one pistol shot. Or when danzig shot krugo, Jaldari always take a ton of hits, yet he dies in one hit. Pathetic. The enemies were very repetetive, like the same guy and his friends keep dying and teleporting to the next room. The damage was unrealistic. I don't care what kind of armor you have on, one rocket kills you. It does not knock you down for a second. As for the levls, way too linear. I found only several places were there was an alternate path.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary First off, i wan't to say that i truly believe this game does not deserve all the bad reviews it's been getting. Many folks have been complaining about the difficulty of this game. I found some spots challenging, but overall the game difficulty is well balanced. If you finished Halo on heroic at least, you should have no problems with this. True, this game doesn't do anything particularly new or innovative, but it is a solid sci-fi FPS. Most places are charging $29.99 for this. I got a used copy for $24.99. Bottom Line: At these prices this is a lot of game for the money.Sound The music and sound effects are acceptable. Some of the triggered combat musics tracks do get a little tedious over time. The weapon sounds are decent, but nothing we FPS fans haven't heard before. The one area i was a little dissapointed by was the use of dolby digital surround. This is where Halo clearly has the advantage. There just isn't enough directional use of the surround channels. It is pretty much all ambient environmental effects coming through the rears.Gameplay There are 2 areas of gameplay: First person shooting and space flight combat. FPS: Standard FPS gameplay. The controls are similar to Halo or MOHFL. The controller setup has many alternate settings in the menu. There is an addition of selectable lock-on aiming for some of the weapons. This comes in handy when you are being shot at by multiple enemies. The levels are pretty much linear with varying objectives. This might turn some off, but i didn't mind that much. There are many different ways to use the environments and weapons to clear a room of baddies and that is always. fun. Weapons: There are 14 weapons to choose from. The weapons are the basic types found in most FPS i.e. pistol, shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher etc. Each weapons has 2 firing modes. Some are cooler than others. My favorite is the Sonic Shock Cannon. I won't say what is does, you'll have to find out. You can also utilize remote ceiling mounted guns in certain places and stationary guns in others. I always enjoy taking control of a robotic gun and laying waste. Saves ammo to. Space Flight Combat: This game was done by the folks who did the colony wars series for the PS1. The space combat is fun, but if there was more to do than just shoot fighters and other ships i.e. more objectives this part would have been cooler. Also, the intigration between FPS and Space combat is done decently. Some have said that the space combat detracts from the FPS but i liked both. NPC AI: This is where the gaWould you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. This game has some great FPS action but it's clogged up with unnecessary and obnoxious flight missions. If you're looking for a good FPS this ain't it; at least not at it's current price. Overall, I suggest renting this game and getting the codes to skip levels.Sound The sound effects are okay but the enemies comments get monotonous. Also, Henry Rollins' performance seems phoned in. It sounds like he doesn't care.Gameplay It's really a shame. This game has so many good qualities but too many bad ones. The FPS levels fun but are plagued with many flaws including a horrible AI. It gets better as the levels advance but in the first few, you can literally shoot one person and the person standing right next to him won't react. Also, the game is very linear. You're kept on the right path by blocked passageways and locked doors. This is just lazy game design. It's also marred by idiotic and annoying missions based on babysitting a certain character or doing something before the time runs out. Also, the lighting levels are off. There may be parts where you have to descend through a trap door or duck into a crawlspace but you can't see the openings because it's too dark. The real pain comes in between FPS levels. You're forced to do these flight missions. The ship is too difficult to control and your foes move like lightning. By the time you're finished your thumbs are broken. The cherry on top of this sundea of crap is having to fly through these rectangles before you land. Nothings better than surviving a geuling battle only to end up getting killed trying to land. Thanks guys.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary First let me say that the game I'm reviewing does not have the same cover as the on above. The one I have is a black Label game.I rented this game a month or so ago and after playing Wolfenstein thru, I wasn't crazy about Mace Griffin. I found the game at a place for $25.00 and any half decent FPS is worth that to me, so I picked it up. Now everybody seems to have a weird Halo fetish and every game on Xbox is compared to Halo. I'm gonna tell you now that there are games that have been released that are far superior to Halo. I do not confuse graphics with game content as soooo many who review tend to do. If a game has a kool machine or building or badguy or whatever that I've never seen or thought of, does that make good graphics? Of course not. Detail and resolution makes great graphics. Does Halo have great graphics...Yep! Are there other games with great graphics? You bet there are. Enough with the Halo groupies already! Do other games have kool music like Halo? Da Da Da Daaaaa, Da Da Da Daaaaa. Well maybe not, but there are many fine games that deserve to be judged on their own merit and not compared to a game that clearly captivated so many people. Mace Griffin is a game with clearly superior graphics. The detail is awsome. The weapons are killer and after playing this game a while and giving it some time, I have come to the conclusion that Griffin is superior to Halo in the graphics dept. Griffin is a newer game than Halo and it should have better graphics. Does Griffin get your heart pumping like Halo? Nope, but I have a feeling it's the sound in H that has alot to do with that. Da Da Da Daaaaaa. Try turning the sound down on H and see what I mean. However it is preferable to me anyway to have enemys that speak english rather than just say, Wa Wa Wa Wa for the most part. I am still waiting for a FPS to come out where the higher difficulty level isn't simply a "you die faster tweak" but rather the enemy should have increased intellegence. Halo also suffered from that flaw. Personally, I like having a beavy of weapons which allows the player to be involved in different types of combat. Halo's 2 weapon limitation always seemed to be unnesscary. Griffin isn't supposed to be Halo. Griffin is like a mix between Halo and Red Faction with flashes of Rouge Leader stired in. Is Mace Griffin an enjoyable game? Absolutely I have about a dozen or so FPS for consoles and Mace Griffin is right there next to Wolfenstein, TS2, Red Faction 2, Metroid Prime and yes H. Does griffin have things that could have been done differently? Sure, but so do all those I mentioned. If you're looking for a FPS that in the same league as those I mentioned, then you'll like Griffin. Again this is the Black Label game I review. Sound Like I say, I enjoy english being spoken by the baddies. The music track seems to be singular from what I remember. I wish they'd used more tracks for different sequences.Gameplay The A.I. isn't anything to rave about. It works, but the baddies do tend to get brainless. Well, I should say suicidal. They don't run into corners and all, but they kamakazi alot. That being said, I must admit I do use the unlimited ammo cheat.Had I played without the ammo cheat, it may well be a different story as far as how the enemy reacts, as my aggressiveness would certainly be less. It's difficult to give an honest evaluation while using ANY cheat on ANY game! So keep that in mind while reading reviews. Would you like to Comment? The reason is that whatever you put out, it will be compared with Halo(and soon Halo2). With that said, I tried playing this game with an open mind, but as I got farther into the game, it just got boring(gameplay, story) and stupid(level of difficulty). My rule of thumb is, whenever a game is delayed, then the game will stink. THe first couple of levels where good, but after a while they just got repetive and the enemy AI got really cheap. If you have a chance to get this game for under 30 bucks, then get it. IF not then trust me its not worth getting.Sound Sound just stinks, have of the time the music overlaps the dialoge in the game, so when someone is telling you were to go, you might not hear it.Gameplay When playing a game, the one thing I truely hate is a game that starts out really easy, and then after a couple of levels the diffculty just gets stupid. Now don't get me wrong, I love playing hard games(Halo on legendary, fighting the ruby and emerald weapons on FFVII), but I hate games that in order to finish you have to use a cheat code. Hey if you can finish the game without one, more power to ya, but when i'm playing a space level and I have been shotting at this guy for 20 minutes, and nothing is happening, then the game gets boring. Also for a game that was delayed, it still had some glitches, espically at the end, that were uncalled for( on the last level, I can't count how many times I got stuck in the wall while I was trying to fly that ship). Also I love FPS, but the one thing I hate about them are ones that you have to use the jump to get past a level. Its cool to use when you are playing against someone, but as far as in the game, just take it out. And while I'm at it, whats up with all the timers. That just means a trail and error until you get it right. One more thing while I'm on my soap box, the developers sure do love snipers. Really when you get to the end of the game, everyone is a sniper(but by that I believe you would have put in the code, so it really doesn't matter). Oh yeah almost forgot, the AI in this game is stupid, unless it has a sniper rifle. I could walk right up to the guy, and have him not move until I shot him.Would you like to Comment?
