Summary

This is an awesome game. VERY REALISTIC. I was suprised to see gamespot.com give it only an average review. Gamespot says "there is no blood in this game". That is false!! There is blood when you shoot someone. And its cool because if you shoot a guy in the leg they will bleed from the leg or wherever you shoot them they will bleed. There is not massive blood like there probably would be in real life, but there is blood. I mean, how unrealistic would a war game be without blood. Gamespot also complains its too hard and time consuming to switch weapons and to heal yourself with the medkit. Well hello, if your a soldier in real life and you have to put on a bandage to heal a wound you can't just push a single button and have it done in 1 second. Just like in real life, even if your in combat, this game makes you reach into your backpack, scroll thru a list with recognizable icons and grab whatever you need from it. Its really not that hard but does take a few seconds as it should if you've been wounded and need to heal yourself. Gamespot also says that your fellow soldiers don't die. This is also false. Although you can keep healing your squad from major injuries if their health meter runs out, they will die if you don't get to them fast enuff with the medkit. Overall this is a very fun and realistic war game.

Sound

Again very realistic. One of the coolest is you always know when a tank is sneaking up on you because you can hear the sound of its rattling rollers beating the ground and it gets louder as it comes closer. There are also different sounds for each machine gun, very fun for guys into guns. This game has gone to painstaking effort to make every little thing as realistic as possible I'm so very impressed. What i've mentioned are only a couple examples as there are millions of others.

Gameplay

Gameplay is fast paced and a map is always available at the push of a button so you know where you are and where you need to go. Mission briefs are stated right by the map and point to areas you need to be in to complete objectives. One thing I like is the realistic damage to the envrionment and objects you shoot at. Example: your shooting at a gunman in the desert with a machine gun. If your aim is a little off and you shoot into some sand you can see the sand fly up where the bullets hit. You can shoot at a building and it leaves bullet holes wherever you shoot. This adds to the realism. There are also a ton of weapons: many different types of machine guns, anti tank mines, C4 explosives, rocket launchers, bazookas, pistols, grenades, smoke bombs, etc. All weapons serve a purpose and are useful in different situations. There are many types of enemy targets: tanks, helicopters, mig fighters, scud missle launchers, bridges, forts, tents, infantry, airports, buildings etc. Its very cool because sometimes your fighting out in the desert and other times you'll be in the middle of the city fighting.

Summary

the game disappointed me AT FIRST when i started, well only because i already have played some of the better war-sim games for all the consoles and PC. after an hour i was hooked and had overlooked most of the flaws in the game. but one flaw that irritated me is that the enemies pinpoint your location before your 'auto aim' locks on. the single player campaign is great. although grab a few buddies and the game becomes awesome, or in my case, having 3 brothers really saves time looking for friends. hmm flaws in MP? in multiplayer the screens are pretty small in any television set smaller than 27 inches. deciding on who is going to carry the firepower to knock out the tanks, whos going to lay cover fire, and whos going with the medic to help rescue and save a wounded comrade makes for some heated arguments if someone fails at their duty.

(note: i scored it 5 overall because of the 4 player split and not having to have extra xboxs to enjoy the multiplayer singleplayer i score it a 4 overall)

Sound

when things get hectic the enemy gunfire actually makes you take cover on the first shot (reflex driven to push and hold down 'B' to lay prone). you can put in your own custom soundtrack your ripped into the xbox harddrive to replace to 'suspense' music.

Gameplay

gameplay for single player is good, with the commands 'on-the-fly'. the ability to 'save' a fallen friend with a medipac is pretty cool, but it seems like he can 'die' many times and you can bring him back to life just as many times. if your character does die on the battlefield (only one casualty on my record, for falling off a cliff) he gets replaced by a green, wet-behind-the-ears private (loss of exp. points also).

multiplayer like i said is awesome, my bros and i have been playing the missions over and over. we usually split up in a pair of two to complete the tasks faster but as we have learned these are DELTA FORCE and SAS commandos and we have to work as a 4 man team most of the time, not SEALs were just two can do the dirty work. just keep a pair of pointmen at a distance while not straying too ahead of the other two for cover fire, youll do just fine

Sound

I didn't much like the music on this game, but hey, you can always play your own or just turn it off. The sounds that the different weapons make are right on. After awhile, you will be able to tell what kind of weapon is being used, from a heavy machine gun to a sniper rifle. Explosions sound great, and vehicles make a distinct mechanical sound that you will be able to hear that will alert you to their presence. Voice acting is also fairly good, and although it's not perfect, it wont make you want to mute the game.

Gameplay

Gameplay is pretty good for the most part. On the first mission, you start out as the rifleman of your squad, charged with rescuing your sniper. After a few missions though, you get a full squad of four specialists, from heavy weapons to medic. Your teamates improve througout the game, adding a nice hybrid RPG element to the game. I also noticed that as you get farther and farther through the game, you weapons will actually improve. Jones (the medic/demolitions specialist), for example, started out with a MP-5 and a shotgun, but I noticed on one level that his shotgun had been improved to a heavier hitting piece of weaponry, a nice touch. The AI of your squadmates is awesome. They will cover each other's backs, shoot at hotspots, and have great aim. The enemy AI isn't as good though, and they mostly charge and fire with no regard for their own lives. The levels are also pretty varied. One of my favorites was where my squad was tasked with taking out an airfield. It had everything from blowing up MiG-29s to close combat fighting inside the control tower, where Jones really shined. Other missions include taking out SCUDs, rescuing people, and just trying to survive. One thing i didn't like was the way the inventory was handled. You can seemingly hold an unlimited amount of equipment, and in the heat of battle I was killed more than once trying to get to a medpack and then switching back to my weapon, which requires you to scroll through the whole inventory unitl you find what you want, select it, use it, then switch back to your weapon. Movement is mostly good, except for strafing, which is so slow it is practically useless.

Sound

Everything in this game sounds great to me, sounds like a war. The guns have a nice pop to them, and the explosions sound pretty beefy. The only thing that didnt sound right was the voices, sometimes you cannot tell what they are saying, but this has no affect on the gameplay.

Gameplay

The very first thing you will notice is that the control doesnt feel right. The fact that it has a look spring and centers your crosshair for you gets real annoying, and you cannot turn it off(why cant they add these simple options?!?). The other problem is the auto aim. Auto aim is good to have sometimes, but in this game its not very functional, and this also cannot be turned off. The good news is, I was able to get use to it pretty quick and the control is good otherwise.

I only played single player for a few hours, and its good, but the real fun is with 3 other buddies. Get a game of coop going with 3 other people and your in for a treat, as long as everyone is willing to get over the few control issues, and its really not too horrible.Team work is very important in this game, each squad member has different types of weapons and abilities. You can heal wounded teamates, and give them items from your inventory. Its awesome fun, and a must play for this game mode, if you dont play alot of multiplayer its still worth a rent, but I think the coop is probably the best reason for a purchase.

For those of you who think this game sucks, I can understand why you could think that. For the first few minutes I was thinking that maybe all the bad reviews were right. Yeah, its by far not perfect and has issues, but I had 3 people over and we had a blast playing for 4 hours straight. I highly recommend atleast renting for the coop. The single player isnt bad, but I dont think it would hold my attention long. I think it would have been real nice to have some system link options, but the little screens arent bad at all.

Sound

i dont even care, i was so disappointed with this game and all of its crap that the music sounded great. but i suppose if you get down to details, it sucked just about as bad as the game.

Gameplay

gameplay is the most horrible of any game of this sort. IT AIMS FOR YOU. You can literally run in a straight line and it will auto aim directly on the guys and if you just shoot your gun they die. It is SOOOOOOO lame. I was so disappointed in the gameplay. Whats even worse, is i quit single player, and was like, oh sweet, multi-player should at least be fun. Then i come to find out that you only get to coop. No offense, but coop is great, but wheres the competitive edge satisfied at. Seriously, i like working as a team, but i like killing all of my friends countless times until they quit the game even more. What is up. AND I PITY YOU IF YOU BOUGHT THIS GAME AND CAN NO LONGER RETURN IT.

Sound

Music was in the garbage on this game. The music is something to be desired but you can turn it off. Sound effects were right on target. The guns sounded like they were supposed to and bombs and takes were right on. Dolby support was ok , If my sniper was stationed on my right side behind me , I would hear him yell at troops. good SFX all around

Gameplay

gameplay is smooth and fun at most times. The option to play as any member of your team is a great add on to this game. The levels are big and when AI troops and your team battle for bragging rights, All hell breaks loose. When you are playing as the team leader , the other players (that are being controlled by Xbox) hold their own and protect you. missions are pretty straight foward and fun. The better you are at the game, the faster your men move up in rank. Its hunting season!

Sound

Most of the sounds in CDS range from good to fair. The gunfire is believable (aside from the SAW, which sounds a little light for a machinegun), but the voiceacting is not as good as it could be. The drill sargeant at the very beginning of the game made me laugh because he sounded so pissed off. I guess that's probably pretty close to reality, though. The in-game music is aweful and repetative. Luckily, the developers allow you to use your own custom soundtracks from the music saved on your xbox.

Gameplay

Core gameplay revolves around the four soldiers you command and positioning these soldiers effectively during combat. Ordering your comrads around and managing your inventory is a daunting task to learn, but once you have it down it becomes second nature. The number of things you can do with these soldiers is pretty impressive, actually.
The first soldier you start with is the team leader. His weapon of choice is the assult rifle and he's also good with pistols and explosives.
Next up is the sniper, who specializes in sniper rifles, pistols, and assult rifles.
Also, there's your machinegunner who uses heavier weapons like the SAW and M60. He's also good with anti-tank weapons and pistols.
Lastely is the scout. His skills include medicine, explosives, and assault rifles.
While this game is quite tactical in nature, there is not a whole lot of realism when it comes to getting shot. Your men can withstand a number of bulletholes before they go down, but you'll find in later missions that getting shot is just a fact of life in CDS.
After you get the controls down and play a while, you'll get the feel for positioning your troops stratigically and maximizing their effectiveness with the weapons they use in certain situations.
My main gripe with CDS is that stealth plays little to no role in this game. The enemy AI is able to spot your troops from vast distances even though you're crouched down and wearing desert camo. In certain missions, they inform you that you are better off by being stealthy, but being sneaky has been impossible for me, so I always end up mowing down endless hordes of enemies after raising an alarm.
Really, that's the only down side I know of with this game. I could subtract from the score that I give to CDS for the game's short length (it took me under 15 hours to conquer), but the cooperative multiplayer mode and difficulty settings can make the game last a lot longer as long as you've got a friend to play with.

Summary

This is must buy for FPS, Tactical and War Gaming fans alike. For more detailed information about the review please see the sections below.

It's not often that I find myself on websites posting reviews of video games, I mean there are plenty of review sites and for the most part they are pretty accurate - right?

Earlier this year one of the best games of 2002 came out on the Xbox (Enclave) and I almost passed it by because it received a very bad review on one of the more 'prominent' gaming sites.

Thankfully, I didn't let one bad review disuade me from purchasing a title nor would I allow one misplaced review to condemn a gaming site that in general I trusted and respected.

It's funny because since that 'misplaced' reivew, I have paid a lot more attention to the review site in question and am starting to believe there is something going on, behind the scenes, that is some how influencing their reviews.

I own a PC, a PS2 and an Xbox. I have also owned a C64, Amiga, Genesis and Nintendo at various stages of my gaming life. I play board games, card games, pen and paper and all in all I would have to say I have been a gaming enthusist for the past 25 years.

Simply put, I will no longer be reading any reviews on the website in question. They have shown a definite change of direction in the past few months and I for one grow more and more disgusted with their prejudice and lack ethics.

Sound

Sound for the most part is excellent. The in game sound effects are fantastic and for the most part voice acting is well done. The surround sound could have been better and at times the British accents on the SAS are funny if not perfect.

Conflict Desert Storm goes the extra step where it counts though. If you want to rip your own sound track and listen to your own tunes while you play this go right ahead. Not my style but a neat option all the same.

Gameplay

Conflict Desert Storm's ability to mix squad based tactics with mission based objectives without slowing down gameplay succeeds on almost every level.

Level design is outstanding without being overly complicated. The action is almost always straight ahead while still leaving plenty of opportunity for the player to experiment. This alone has incredible replay value as you find new ways to approach situations.

What really sets this game apart is the oustanding AI. Nothing is more frustrating than a squad based game where your teammates don't do what you tell them to do (if you ever shot Boomer in the head because he was a liability you know exactly what I'm talking about).

You need some cover fire, simply setup your heavy machine gunner in the right location and he will cover your advance. Want to jump in and take control when the fire fight breaks out, go ahead. Maybe you prefer to play the sniper or the engineer? You want to drive the jeep or man the gun on the back? This game is all about options and they aren't simply fluff added to the game without purpose.

But wait there's more. You haven't played Conflict Desert Storm until you've taken advantage of the multiplayer support. There's no Xbox live support (I'm betting the sequel will have that), but it has the best cooperative split screen mode since Halo on any platform.

Conflict Desert Storm has gameplay alright, in spades.

Sound

Sound is not something I pay much attention to, but I feel the sounds are adequate. You can here oncoming tanks, trucks, and helocopters, as well as your squad members and the surrounding weapons fire, what else do you need?

Gameplay

Gameplay is where this game shines. The controls take a while to get used to, I'd say roughly about an hour learning curve but after that it becomes second nature. The controls are well thought out and very accesable when things get cooking. You can save anytime anywhere during a mission but only twice so use them sparingly. Actually I've not needed to save that many times yet unless I had to leave. The game is the perfect mix of difficult but not pull your hair out throw the contoller difficult! Squad command is very fluent, the missions are very realistic. That brings me to my next point, this game has a very real feel to it. You only find ammo and weapons in places you'd expect to find them not buried in a shrub in the middle of a dried up lake bed. The ammo alottment is just right, you can go in guns a 'blazin if you want but you'll run out fast, choosing your targets carefully and short bursts are the key to proper ammo management to allow for finishing a mission without ammo hunting. My only complaint is the zoom levels either your zoomed in or your not there is no in between but its not that big of a deal rather a small nuisance.
