Summary

Azurik is an action/rpg game which relies heavily on exploration, but with some combat and puzzles thrown in for good measure. Any fan of exploration games (like Tomb Raider, Shadowman, etc) will be immediately at home with this, but if you prefer your exploration in small doses, you'd best look elsewhere. To say this game is huge is an understatement...it is larger then any game in this genre that comes to mind and will take some serious commitment to work through, especially considering the game does little hand-holding and relies on the player simply wandering around to figure things out. With some commitment, however, it proves to be an absolutely immersive and rewarding experience that will keep you busy for weeks, if not months on end. Any fan of exploration games would do well to pick this one up

Sound

Sounds are more pretty basic, but functional. The sound of Azurik jabbing his staff is repetitive; some more variety would have helped. The occasisonal musical bits add to the tension but are brief. You'll be too focused on the search to care, however.

Gameplay

In Azurik, you guide the main character around several large areas of a world in search of pieces of missing disc. Along the way you must fight creatures big and small, collect keys and solve simple puzzles. Your main weapon is a staff which has 4 elemental powers (earth, air, fire, water) which can then be combined into a large number of powers...once you acquire them. There are only 2 types of attacks, though deciding which "power" to use depending on the enemy adds to the complexity. Enemies come in lots of varieties, and some even merge into new types which makes for more interesting variations.
The focus of the game, however, is to search for pieces of discs and new powers, and given the enormous areas in the game, gameplay can become tedious at times. Puzzles fall into the "find the key" or "do this in the right sequence" variety...not especially original or difficult, but definitely satisfying given the lengths you have to go through to accomplish some of the later goals.
If there's one drawback, it's the lack of a map or clear objectives, so players definitely don't want the game to sit too long between sessions or they may forget where certain areas are. This is especially apparent when the game expects you to retrace your steps to find an area that was not accessible earlier...pad and paper recomended.
The game is largely free-form; a guide in the main town does give you clues as to what to do next, but if you've done something out of order don't expect much guidance. As such, expect to spend a lot of time scouring older areas in search of the one item you missed. Some indication of this would have been a welcome addition, as some of the areas are simply too large to go back to for the 20th time. And finding items is hard enough without having to jump on moving platforms, thank you. Fortunately, these platform bits are rare. The gameplay overall has a nice blend of action and exploration, ultimately on a scale that has rarely, if ever been attempted.

Sound

The sounds are alright. I usually played music while playing Azurik so I didn't hear much of the sound and music. My one complaint here is the voice acting. The people in the town where really annoying. Everytime you got close to them they would say "please help us Azurik" and stuff like that. Their voices got annoying and they looked gay.

Gameplay

This is where I have mixed feelings. To me, playing Azurik got boring fast. The elemental realms your in are huge. Perathia consists of 6 realms, fire, water, air, earth, life and death. Each realm has multiple disk pieces in them. They also have many different sections which make them long and tough. Just when you think your finished with a realm, your probably not. Sometimes you have to do something in one realm to get to a certain point in an older realm. There is also passages which lead from realm to realm that make it easier then going through town.

Besides finding pieces of disks you'll also find keys, gems, power-up's and obsidians. There is many different shapes and colors of keys. You'll need to find the right slot to place the keys in to activate whatever the slots are for. Keys are not easy to come across though. Whenever you see one, it's best to go for it then because it may be hard to get to it later on. The colored gems increase your weapons elemental bars that match their color once 100 of them are collected. For example, if you collect 100 red gems then your fire element bar will increase in size. This is helpful because every time you use a power equipped to yourself, the bar will decrease. The element power-up's increase the level of the element that matches the color of the power-up's. These are rare and useful. Each element can go up to level 3. When they increase in level, the power that the element uses will increase. Obsidians are these black and purple things that are supposed do something for you when you collect 10 of them but I'm not sure how to use them.

The Axion is the name of Azurik's weapon. Once you have collected all four powers for it, fire, water, earth and air, you can equip ever power and armor to Azurik.By equipping elements to yourself you can power up your Axion or give yourself armor. Your can also combine elements for shield and even wings! Some of the things are pretty cool. Throughout the game you'll come across many blockages in the path that have pictures on them. You'll see things like fire walls, boulders and big ice blocks. Those can be destroyed by using a certain element(s) on them. Sometimes you'll have to have the power(s) at a certain level. The circles and symbol on the object will indicate the level and power needed.

The fighting gets repetitive and boring. You won't need to defeat most enemies and can run past them easily. Most enemies will respawn once you continue a game or die to. If you have to fight, it's best to try to find what elements or combination of elements is effective against the monsters. If your trying to run past its best to hit them once to stun them for the time to get away.

Sound

I've got my Xbox hooked up to a Kenwood Dolby Digital 5.1 THX receiver and this game utilizes the surround sound the best of any game I own. You can hear the chirping of bugs out of the surround speakers as you explore the environments and the bass that comes out of the subwoofer when you're in battle is impressive. I look forward to firing this game up just to hear what each new level has to offer. If you've never played an Xbox hooked up to an optical digital out, you need to experience it. An AMAZING difference. . .

Gameplay

The gameplay is a blast. I recently bought an Xbox with Halo, Azurik, NFL Fever, NBA Inside Drive, Hunter, and Amped, and I've been playing this one more than any of them. You have to use various techniques to kill the creatures you come across and stay on course. Climbing rocks, swimming, scaling bridges, and climbing vines is just some of what you'll be doing in this game.

Summary

You are Azurik, a Lore Guardian of Perathia. You are sworn to protect the elemental disks - the disks which maintain balance in the universe. Ages ago, the Death disk was lost. The prophecy is clear: sooner or later, Perathia will be thrown into chaos, and two men will fight for control of the disks.

That time has come. One day, after a brawl with you, your fellow, more sinister Guardian, Balthazar, comes across the Death disk by accident. The Death Guardian visits him, and promises him what he really wants - power - in return for help. That day, Balthazar goes to the Elemental Palace and tries to steal the disks. Eldwyn, the head Lore Guardian, tries to stop him, but is killed, and subsequently, the disks are shattered and sent to various parts of Perathia. As Eldwyn's apprentice, it is your duty to retrieve the lost disks before Balthazar gets to them.

Sound

Herein are some of the best and worst factors of the game. First of all, the sound effects are the one thing that really take away from the game. Azurik's screaming and yelling gets annoying real fast. You learn to cope with it eventually, but it is still annoying. A few other sounds in the game might irritate you as well.

Where are those puppies I keep hearing?!

What makes up for this is the sound track. Definitely one of the best I've seen to date on a console game. Sounds like something straight out of a movie if you ask me. Bravo Adrenium! Nicely done.

Gameplay

Gameplay is what you'd expect from an adventure/action game like Azurik. It can get a bit complicated though.
While a good deal of the game is fighting, alot of it is puzzles, too. Like I said, that's to be expected.
One thing that I did not expect was the immense amount of backtracking you have to do as well as the non-linear route the game itself takes.
Basically, there is alot of stuff you need to do, and, even though the game tries to guide you along through them, there isn't always a particular order you need to do them in. This can make the game feel like one big mess.
However, since this game is huge, this can be helpful.

I haven't finished Azurik yet. I'd say I'm about halfway through. However, I am enjoying this game more than I am hating it. Some parts can be a real pain to get past, but all you have to do is put on a code, or read the walkthrough, and all that turmoil is over...and you feel good about it. For "old-fashioned" gamers who don't use aid like that, I could imagine it being a problem.

No matter what, this is a game with little middle ground. It's not a revolutionary game like HALO was, because it's in a more defined genre. Either you love it or you hate. Given the choice I'd say I love it!

Sound

To tell you the truth, I don't pay too much attention to the sound because I'm so immersed in the actual game play. But from what I recall it really is not that bad. The background music ( is there any???)is just fine. The sound effects are pretty repetitive but so what? The game over all is GOOD.

Gameplay

This game really is not as bad as many people say it is. Yes the fighting gets very repetitive but I just use the God mode and bypass it if I want to. If you complain about the game saves so far apart just use the darn save code!!!!!! No problem. There is so much to be done to complete this game although it gets old after a while I can't seem to put it down as I progress further and further. The worlds are huge! And if it wasn't for the walkthrough right next to me I might be playing for months before I am halfway through. Do the codes and walkthrough take away from the games enjoyment, perhaps but it doesn't take away from the actual gameplay itself. The puzzles are well thought out and brain worthy. I only use the walkthrough when I need to. The fighting is basic but the combinations of the elemental powers makes it fun anyways. I thought about the enemies reseting themselves after you defeat them and I realized that there are times when you need to replenish your elemental powers and if the enemies did'nt reset you would find it hard to refill your power. And if they didn't reset you would have miles of areas with no action at all, so this is OK with me (remember use the god mode if you need to) Overall,it is a fun, addictive game. And I LOVE videogames. The X-Box Rules!!!!

Summary

Azurik is an incredible game, In fact I can't wait to get off work to put in in by box. Let me say that this game is worth the money, I've played most popular games on the xbox and this is the one I spend the most time on. This is a total adventure game with some combat aspects. I couldn't believe the depth of the game, never have I played a game as immense. It is a 3rd person walk around find the elemental discs, slice and dice a wide assortment of baddies. Like the small dragon looking things and what my 3 year old son calls the teletubbies. They look like Teletubbies on crack with inflated heads. I love It. If you like adventure games like Zelda and SoulReaver you will love this one.
I especially like the Deapth of this game unheard of by far. The best adventure Game I have played so far.

Sound

The sound will blow you away, having an orchestra play custom tunes specifically for this game really makes this game a complete experience.

Overall you have top-notch sound and graphics, and the biggest fun in exploration you will have.

Gameplay

The Game play great, one Element that I've seen people have a problem with, is the camera controlls. I think people who have a problem with it have not given it a chance, it does's take a little time to get used to but in the end it proves what a little innovation can do. Every adventure game I have played has given me trouble with the fixed camera's especially in close quarters. With this movable camera my troubles are gone. I hope more adventure games have the same camera capabilities.
It's a beautiful thing when you can look in any direction while moving. One more thing is the trigger button that puts the camera at a high view this helps in combats when you are surrounded by enemies. Best Camera controls on any adventure games. I give big Kudos for this!!!

Sound

Other reviewers have already summed this up well. Above-average music, very poor sound effects. After thirty hours, I turned the sound effects almost off, and cranked the music up. There's a bug in the game's volume controls; they don't take effect until you've restarted the XBox.

Gameplay

In Azurik, repetition is the name of the game. You can save only in pre-defined spots (unless you use the cheat which allows you to save anywhere), and everytime you load a game all of the monsters are refreshed. It is not possible to branch a game (revert to a much older save, or save into a new file), so once you make a mistake and save it, you have to live with it.

The combat system gets old really quickly -- your character has exactly three attacks, A, B, or Black, only one of which (A) is worth using.

Sound

sounds was kinda boring, music is pretty crappy (unlesss u use the give your guy and Afro cheat, then the music changes too and its pretty cool Afro Porn music :) ) and you cant put your own music on so that sucks.. and little sound effects, hitting people with your axion and summoning elements and monster sounds are pretty crappy. id have to say sound is worst part of this game

Gameplay

Decent. the jumping is a little .. how do i say this, well pretty crappy. the controls arent bad, except for the reverse horizontal axis (left is right and right is left) the camera angels are very good allowing you to move from 3rd to almost 1st person. and if ur your in a fight and need to re center your camera angel right away, just hit R and its done. Overall its pretty fun, but can get annoying when u cant save anywhere (without the cheat).
