Summary

I've been playing Madden since 1996 and there has never been a better release. I don't understand the low review scores, but this installment is the most exciting and rewarding release of this franchise to date. Take the time to learn the many features which make this game stand out from the rest, and you will be rewarded with a realistic sports gaming experience second to none!

Sound

Madden actually says some original things in this years game thank goodness. If I heard him say, "He did the right thing, concentrated and caught the ball" on a fair catch one more time as with 2002 and 2003, I was going to wretch. Al Michaels is a bit monotone, and doesn't get real excited over, well, anything, but again, I can overlook it, as I'm a little immersed in what I'm going to call on my next play anyway. When the referee talks on a penalty, or a challenge you can't hear him, something with needs improvement as I would like to know if my 45 yard gain was reversed or not. I do hope next years commentary is improved, but the other features of this game make up for an average performance in the booth.

Gameplay

Yes, this game is more difficult to play than any previous Madden. There are more interceptions, but only if you throw into a crowd. A little practice on the many game play features are extremely rewarding. The blocking hot routes and being able to change a play on the fly are extremely realistic and more importantly functional. The running backs finally turn on a dime opposed to the slow reaction of previous releases, the passing and running games are more challenging, which I guess frustrates some gamers. You won’t complete every pass, or gain 8 on every run. Do they in the NFL? The main complaint I don't understand is the "Lack of plays in your play book." There are more than ever in this years Madden. More offensive and defensive alignments and blitzes, and the "Playmaker" function adds much more flexibility even after the play is called. Not enough plays still? Check out the "Create your own play" feature, and get creative. I personally don't want to cycle through endless plays while the play clock clicks down. There are ample plays for the most advanced gamer. Another improvement is you can no longer call the same plays over and over. The AI is much improved. The defense line will shift as it sniffs out your play calling tendencies which forces you to be more creative with each offensive drive, and don’t call same defense too many times either. The AI will take advantage of what you give it and light you up. I love that! The controls are simple, not easy, and react as quickly as you summon your command. Is the game perfect? Not a chance. It's a video game after all; but if you want to get as close to being an NFL coach as you can get, Madden 2004 is quite an adrenaline rush. Be creative, mix your plays, don't throw into crowds, and have a blast!

Summary

I got this game for christmas. It's an awsome game, however if you're coming off of the 2k3 series then it will take some time to get used to. This game is very realistic. It is better than ESPN NFL 2k4. 2k4 is too easy, such as the running game. Also, when you create a player, you create EVERY aspect of him. You can edit everything from his tattoos and haircut to how muscular he is. You can have him very weak but still look like he's jacked on steroids. Also, you create every attribute about him. Example, when creating a qb, it lets you decide how he can block, catch the ball and such. However, they do not affect his overall rating.

Sound

Great, except when the ref is anouncing a penalty you can't hear him.

Gameplay

Great, very realistic. It should be live, but it's not.

Sound

Sound is ok. Can never hear the ref talking cause he is too quiet. Crowds don't seem to get into it much either.

Gameplay

This is not the NFL at all. After you call a timeout you get 25 seconds to choose a play. Whatever happened to a 30 second timeout then the 40 second game clock??? It would be nice to have time to choose a play EA Sports! And the 25 second clock after change of possession is crazy. Too many times you end up with a delay of game penalty cause your trying to find a good play. When playing the computer, it snaps the ball at 30 seconds and only controls the clock when the game is over and the computer has won. Stupid! The playbooks are getting worse every year. This year there is no wedge formation on kickoffs. You can only choose one playbook for the whole game! It would be nice to change playbooks during the game if you dont like the one you have. Then again, the playbooks are absolute junk. This part of the game needs an overhaul. Too many similar plays, not enough play formations to choose from. The Packers have 3 shot gun formations??? As well, there are no shovel passes, and not enough RB screen plays. Defense is silly cause the run game is hard to choose. You more or less have to blitz to stop the run. Thats not what the blitz is for. You also cannot practice defense in the practice game session an tutorial. Would be nice to understand what some formations can do for you. I gues EA sports figures football is only about offense.

Summary

Bought this game the day it came out. Last few years I have been a follower of the Sega NFL 2k series. Decided to try Madden this year because last years NFL 2k3 was a damn buggy game, way too many bugs for my taste. What do I like about this game?..gameplay is fairly good and control is solid. Players feel a bit like they are skating across the field, but overall control is good. I have not owned another Madden on my xbox, and don't own a Ps2 so I can't compare this to other Madden titles for these systems. Presentation is done very nicely which is a plus. Being able to creat a team is very cool,, and being able to move a franchise to another city is even better. Game cheats like all hell on tougher difficulty settings ie; makes you fumble 5 times in a quarter etc. This really pisses me off when it comes to next gen sports titles. Companys are using the same AI for all difficulty settings and then just increasing fumbles, interceptions etc to make the game "harder", and Madden really cheats more than most games I've seen...very frustrating! All in all I think this game is a good game, but If you are going to buy 1 Pro Football game I would recommend ESPN NFL Football over Madden all day (not going to review that title here, did that on its thread). I'm sure die hard Madden followers (I used to be on myself) will like this game and scoff at ESPN's wonderful offering, but those willing to try something different will see the light. Madden is certainly not a "bad" game, as its deficiencies only become apparent when you see a better product (ESPN Football), and even then Madden still isn't a bad game, its just not the best game of football on the market. Ill keep my Madden and play it from time to time for a change of pace.

Sound

Sound is the biggest letdown of all:( Owning NCAA 2004 I had high hopes for Madden...boy was I letdown. Madden (who I love) and Al Michaels (who I can't stand) sound like they are doing commentary on a game of Bingo at the loacal "Shady Acres" old folks home...completely dry and unexcited they just plod along with uninciteful commentary...the commentary, well...it just plain SUCKS! For those that say commentary doesn't help a game, go play NCAA 2003 or 2004. Sound is a very powerful tool that can pull the player into the game and raise the overall excitement level while playing if done right..Madden and Michaels would make put me to sleep if it wasn't for AL Michaels hiddeous voice.
Sound effects are decent though. The "crunch" from a big hit, the "snap" of the pads, the "thump" of the ball getting kicked all sound fairly realistic allbeit of fairly low sampling rates...no real complaints on sound effects save the lack of on the field player chat like ESPN has.

Gameplay

Gameplay is good. Animations are plentyful and done nicely. Players seem a bit "disconnected" from the playing surface, but it doesn't ruin the gameplay. Passing game is done better than running game, but as another reviewer mentioned, linebackers are WAY to good in this game..they need to be toned down. Best execution of the onside kick I have seen in a football game so far....very nice:) Playmaker control is a pretty cool feature especially if your playing with friends.Hot routes are a nice feature as well. AI of the players on defense seem good for the most part ie; defenders keep pursuing the ball handler even if they are out of the play (my Cowboys could learn from this~) Leading the receivers with the ball is done well...not too sensitive, and not unresponsive. This game certainly has alot of "bells and whistles" although most are fluff and do not really add to the overall game...I can understand why last years Madden owners do not look at this game as an upgrade for them.

Sound

Same old repetetive commentary - although it's not quite as annoying as year's past for some reason. Maybe it's Summeral's additon by subtraction.

Gameplay

The really frustrating part about the flaws is the fact that 90% of the gameplay is very good. The running game is tight, hot routes are dope, and the pre-snap playmaker controls are sweet. Unfortunately, the flaws come close to ruining all of the positives. Flaw #1 is the superhuman Linebackers. Don't even bother throwing over the middle in this game if it's anywhere near in the vicinity of a MLB. Even if your WR is 8 yards behind him, the LB will jump across his body 400 feet into the air, and will snag the ball with his glue-hands. I've broken down the replays and it's just weak. The same can also hold true on an out pattern, some lousy nickel back will pick you off, even when he's way out of position. Even worse is the fact that 90% of these int's result in TD's. Somehow every defender magically develops incredible 4.1 speed when they get the ball in their hands. In my opening game playing with the Bills against the Patriots, Bledsoe got sacked, fumbled at the 10 yard line, and the ball was picked up by Anthony Pleasant, who rumbled 90 yards for the TD, outrunning my entire offense - including Eric Moulds. If you don't know who Pleasant is, he's a 40 year old defensive lineman who couldn't outrun your Grandmother. When I played the Pats again, the EXACT SAME PLAY happened AGAIN - which leads me to believe that the games are fixed in addition to being B.S. Even if by some miracle you catch one of these defenders from behind, they will turn into Jim Brown and stiff-arm you to the turf on their way to the endzone. It would be one thing if these retarded plays only happened a few times per season, but they happen at least once EVERY SINGLE GAME. As a recent poster suggested, defense is a joke. You can shut down the run with your dime, but watch out on 3rd&15 - your secondary will get shredded unless you luck out with a turnover. Even with a "safe" cover 2 defense your safties magically disapear in the dust of a WR. It's either a TD for the offense or an int returned for a TD the other way. There are no punts on this game. In fact the defensive TD's are so insane, it's not uncommon to accumulate less than 250 yards of offense and still score 40+ points. With 5 minute quarters you can get realistic scores but the stats are low and there isn't enough time on the clock if you get behind. 6 minutes feels about right, but the final scores are too high, so pick your poison. Accelerated clock is a nice concept in theory, but not practical with all the pre-snap reads you must make at the line of scrimmage - the play-clock runs down too fast. I'm looking like the 2001 Rams with my record number of points scored and given up in a season. Frustrating, because like somebody else said, I too pride myself on defense. Practice though apparantly does not make perfect in this game.

Sound

The X-box version of the game contains the Custom Soundtracks feature, so if you don't like Adema and Alien Ant Farm. You can play your favorite tracks insted. As far as the game goes the sound is not good. Al Michaels really sounds better than he did last year. John Madden sounds horrible, and repetitive as always. Players on the field grunt as usual, and the crowd behind you just plain sucks.

Gameplay

The gameplay follows the basics of a regular madden game, but with a significant twist. The Playmaker control really changes the tone of the game. Giving you the ability to move blockers on the fly, and also change formations on the fly. Also the Franchise-Owner's mode is a bonus giving you the option of Setting Your own Ticket, and Food Prices. Madden 101, Practice, Training Camp, and the ablity to unlock secrets by Your EA Sports Bio is fun. Madden Card's are also available to get Special Teams, and Stadiums.

Sound

The sound of player collisions still sound like cars crashing instead of bruising tackles. As for John Madden and Al Michaels they are just as boring as they are on Monday Night Football. In all fairness, Al Michaels is a good play by play annoucer, but this game needs freshness. Maybe Rush Limbaugh's commentary would be a good addition. While we're at it let's change next years version to Rush Limbaugh Football 2005. Oh wait, it won't sell bc it doesn't have the Madden name. Wake up people and listen to the coffeemaker perculate.

Gameplay

Gameplay has improved with tighter controls and more speed, but it's hardly noticeable. Yes, this game plays nice but so has it's predecesors. Does it really deserve the high reviews??? Halo was a great game too, but does that mean if they put the same game out for the next four years with minor changes it should get 4's and 5's??

Sound

Hmm.. the sound gives me mixed feelings because it hasn't been improved much (a reacurring theme in this game) but I love Madden's quibs so much I can't bash the sound too much. The music needs a desperate improvement and they don't play the user added songs from the hard drive in the actuall game. I wonder if JM himself picks out the music or if the game producers just add in what they think kids will like? A question to ponder next time madden reminds me that "it's a good thing when you score". How can people not like saying's like that? Or my favorite that goes something along the lines of "that's what 90 percent of this game is.. And you know what they say, that's half the battle". I mean seriously, if the game itself is getting you down, just think that your score is higher than JM's commentary IQ. They could still do something about the clear insertion of team names when Al is introducing the teams. The...... FALCONS.... will be taking on The......... VIKINGS..... Really, how hard is it to make that smooth? The "hut huts" are the same they have been for about 13 years. But I like it that way. It makes me realize how far this game has come fromt he asteroid sized football I loved so much in Madden '93.

Gameplay

The gameplay for the new Madden game hasn't improved much from 2003. In fact, from what I've experienced it has downgraded from last year's installment. One big thing I have noticed is in tight coverage, the DB's no longer stick their hands in to break up a pass. They just sit back, wait for the guy to grab the ball, and as good ol' JM will let you know, "lay a lickin' on him". The only time they will swat a pass is if they are 2 or 3 yards away from him. And yes I have knockdowns all the way up on the AI settings. In fact, the defence in general, as far as the passing game is concerned, seems to have taken a dip from last year. I waisted my time making my team good defensively and the computer can still rack up at least 300 passing yards against me a game. This is due to the overwhelming Computer Assistance placed into the game. Once you start winning by about 17 or more, the computer tightens up on D and throws passes that would make the love child of Joe Montana and Brett Favre envious. The computer, however, loves an interception as you will find out when it happens sometimes 10 times in a game. (And that's with the INT AI only up 1 from non-existent). On one occasion a DB literally materialized in front of my wide open reciever to intercept the ball. That occasion nearly put the controller through a very expensive t.v. Glitches like this are not uncommon if the computer deams you loss-worthy. Once the computer has it in for you their is no way to overcome the awesome cheating power of a little green X. The difficulty of the game also suffers from flaws. I walloped the computer 61-0 (don't ask me how I held them to 0 leading by that much 'cause I will never figure it out) one game, but the next game the computer must have felt it didn't do it's job at making the game close the last time 'cause I couldn't do anything right apparantly the next game and I loss 17-27. Although I did appreciate the more realistic score and the fact the computer was a challenge, I didn't appreciate the only way I could score was by the ever popular punt return TD's and INT TD's. I couldn't move the ball on offence and although the score doesn't look like it, the computer racked up over 400 yards of offence on me. There is a lot of tinkering with the AI setting to get this game to function right. The computer can pass block with the best of them, but when it comes to blocking for the run the OL just wanders around like a bunch of kids with no t.v. to watch. For the player the exact opposite is true. One thing I am happy about is they fixed the problem with your OL never doing well when you played the season. In M2004 the OL actually pancake people in the games you play so they have a chance to make the pro bowl. They also fixed the same problem with the defence players not getting enough tackles to make the pro-bowl. I don't understand why they can't just give an option to have the computer sim games at the same length quarters that you play at. Although the accelarated clock feature allows you to play 15 minute quarters in only slightly longer than it takes to play my standard 7 minute quarters. Basically I was very, very dissapointed in the lack of improvement in the overall gameplay of M2004. I felt ripped off buying a new product that was in most cases the same or actually worse than the prior product and in only a select few cases mildly improved. By the way where are the sideline, drag your feet balance to stay in bounds, catches at? Overall, the more you play the game the more you start to understand why the glitches in the game are there and that if you just play through them and not smash the X-box with a hammer, it's not too bad of a game as far as a true simulation goes.

Sound

Can't really say anything about surround sound or dolby. Don't have it. However, the sounds on the field are nice. Crowd noice keeps you interested.

Gameplay

Facemasking can be handled with sliders. I moved them after experiencing too many facemasking penalties and have seen good results. Fumbles may be my next adjustment. However, the player movements are terrific. The game has obviously been greatly refined over the years.

I guess one day I'll be able to switch to a defender as soon as a pass is thrown and be able to effectively defend it. But it'll take a lot of practice. I find that good playcalling and staying on one man on defense allows me to limit big plays and make more plays myself.

I think this is a great game for hardcore gamers. You must practice and understand football strategy on both sides of the ball. I love it for the realism.
