Summary Reading the only other review has prompted me to write this. He has, without doubt, some serious points that I agree with. He also has several points that are off base in my opinion. To start with there being 3 different options to purchase. How is this a negative? I personally do not like it, but as a consumer should we not have choices. Even if the pricing is a little wacky and the unit without a hard drive is almost pointless to buy, you have a choice as to which to buy if you want one. He is entitled to his own opinion on if it is the worst device he has ever owned, but he must not have owned many if this is the worst. His comment - no matter which type you buy, it will break in four months. This is a broad sweeping comment that is completely false. Mine has broke, but I owned it for 17 months before it happened and is in the process of being fixed as I write this. The return process has been extremely simple (Thus far). Microsoft has also address the hardware failure rate buy extending the warranty to 3 years. I cannot comment on the validity of his repair as that is his alleged experience. His "Questionable Business Practice" He says that the Xbox 360 costs $400 dollars. False again - As there are 3 different models the prices have been - $299, $399, $479. All three of the prices have been lowered in the past couple days and they are now - $269, $349, and $459. As for wireless controllers being $50 dollars - how is that a questionable business tactic? If it's to expensive for you, don't buy it. Same with the wireless adaptor (which is extremely overpriced, I would never buy this). As for Xbox Live being $50 a year - yes it is. I don't like it but I pay because Microsoft has never promised me to be able to play online for free, they have never been misleading about it. Their points system is a joke, in my opinion it is designed to confuse you into not realizing how much content is. But with some simple math you can figure out "This download is 400 points, 80 points = $1. So this download is $5" not that hard. As for the rechargeable batter packs - once again, don't buy them. I bought the "Bunnie" batteries that are rechargeable and have had no problems. Memory cards ARE a joke and expensive. Which once again is the reason to not buy the Core pack. If you are buying a Xbox 360, get one with a hard drive and you don't need a memory card. As for complaining about games being $60 - stop crying. Look at PS3 games, wow! $60 and the have marketing in them too. This just in, games are expensive and developers need money if they are to keep making them. Blaming this on Microsoft is like blaming Ford or Chevy because your gas station is charging to much for gas. As for his comment that games have decreased in cost to make, show me one legit source document. Every website, magazine, or podcast you see, developers are talking about how expensive it has become with this new technology. In summary, even though mine has died for right now, I would definity recomment this system to anyone. Also a good value is the HD-DVD Drive Strength it has a great online service - $50 a yeara super collection of games cheaper than a ps3 can be used as a media extender microsoft extended the warranty HD-DVD drive available Weakness red ring of death - 3 read lightsWould you like to Comment? Summary Understand that I am not a fanboy for another company. I have owned a Atari, NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Apple 2, genesis, sega cd, dreamcast, playstation, playstation 2, gamecube, NGage, original xbox, and many more. Now on to my review...There are now 3 options for this system: Core, Pro, and Elite. The difference is harddrive space available. I guarantee you that any enjoyment you get out of this system will be overshadowed by constant headaches. This is easily the worst system I have ever owned and quite possibly even the worst electrical device I have owned. I am in the process of filling out a long Better Business Bureau form because of the shear amount of crooked business practices. Replacement: No matter what system type you buy it will break in four months. IGN, Gamespot, 1up, and many other videogame publications have mentioned this. Now on to the worst part. Once it breaks, it takes 5 business days just to mail you the console. Then depending on the depth of the problem it will take 3-4 weeks to fix, and then another 5 business days to have it mailed back to you. There are also strict rules for how you package it back to them, and if they aren't met(and even sometimes when they are) it will be sent back to you without any work done and you will need to spend another 20 minutes on customer support to get a new refrence number to start the process over again. Questionable Business Tactics The system itself is $400, which will break. The Warranty info is literally twice the size as the instruction booklet for the system. Wireless contollers are $50 The digital pads and buttons wear out around 4 months. Wired controllers. The cord is half as long asthe original xbox but not to worry if you don't mind buying Wireless xbox live receiver $100. Twice the cost of a name brand wireless receiver. But don't bother buying an industry standard one, because it doesn't work with the xbox. XBOX Live "Gold" $50 a year, higher average price for shorter amounts of time. You didn't need a compatible service to buy anything like this to play games online when you played online on Dreamcast, PC, or even Genesis over XBAND. They are simply price gouging for online play and deceptively have 2 types of XBOX LIVE where one can only download updates for games so when you look at the box you think it comes free. XBOX Marketplace "Points" $6.25 for 400 points. XBOX live has some TV shows, music clips, movies, old games, etc. that you can download. Wow finally a plus, except for the fact that you have to pay per purchase over a service that you pay to be a member of. Oh yea its also a "points" system instead where Microsoft's designed currency is stronger than the dollar and has three amounts of points that you can purchase at a time. So if you want a TV show that costs 1000 points you'll need to buy 1200. Very hard to explain, very deceptive, literally bordering on illegal. Rechargable battery packs $15. Spilling a small amount of water even briefly on the copper will break it. Rechargable docking station $50. Power connector for this looks identical to the original xbox power connector that was recalled for starting fires. Memory packs are $20. Basically a usb stick to keep game saves that isn't needed if you have a hard drive. The price is triple the price of any name brand USB stick. Games are $60 instead of $50. Games have many viral ads. Tony Hawk's Project 8 even forces you to watch commercials for companies like Etnies, Quicksilver, etc when you beat parts of the game and DECREASED costs of production should have given us cheaper games to begin with. Strength NONE.Weakness Everything.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member.
