Summary

It's easy to see why some have called the Xbox Microsoft's "Trojan Horse." Looking at the specifications alone, the video game system could be confused with a PC. The Xbox features an Intel Pentium III 733MHz processor, a special Nvidia NV2A graphics core based on the GeForce 3 engine, an 8GB hard drive, high-speed networking, HDTV display support, DVD playback capabilities, and a Microsoft operating system. However, instead of sitting on the desktop, the Xbox will be more at home in your living room. The front of the eight-pound unit features four controller ports, a slide-out disc tray, a disc-eject button, and a power button. You'll find a power connector, an AV port, and a network port in the rear of the unit. The standard Xbox A/V cable uses composite audio and video cables, but you can purchase additional A/V adapters to provide RF, S-Video, component video, and digital optical output. The Xbox works with HDTVs as well as standard 4:3 TVs. If you have an HD-ready television or monitor, the Xbox can output 480p, 720p, or 1,080i signals in either normal or widescreen (16:9) aspect ratios depending on game support. Most games only output up to 480p, but you'll find that images are still quite sharp. In addition to the impressive video display capabilities, the Xbox also supports 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound. Even though the Xbox has a built-in DVD-ROM, you'll need to purchase an Xbox DVD Movie Playback Kit to unlock the movie playback functionality. Unfortunately, while the system does support progressive scan output for games, the Xbox does not offer progressive scan DVD movie output. If you have a broadband connection, you can use the systems built-in Ethernet adapter for online multiplayer gaming. You will also need to purchase Microsoft's Xbox Live Starter Kit (available with 12-month or 3-month subscription plans). The Xbox Live system allows you to play against other people, and it offers community functions including friends lists and the ability to send and receive game invitations. You can even talk in-game with other players using the Xbox Live Communicator headset. Currently, over 100 Xbox game titles offer Xbox Live support, and there are more to come. The Xbox console also comes with a built-in 8GB hard drive, so you don't have to deal with memory cards in order to save games as with the PlayStation 2 and GameCube, but you can still purchase an Xbox memory card in case you want to transfer saved games over to a friend's house. The hard drive also improves game load times, because the system can cache data for quick access rather than reading information from the disc each time a load is necessary. At $149, the Xbox sells for the same price as the PlayStation 2 and costs about $50 more than the GameCube. While the PS2 currently has a sizable library of great games, including exclusives such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, most top games are being released on the Xbox simultaneously, and the console has its own excellent Xbox-only titles such as Halo 2 and Fable. The Xbox offers superior graphics and possibly the best online functionality. It's the obvious choice for those who want the game system with the best audio and video performance and have the 5.1 surround-sound package and HDTV to enjoy it.

Summary

Despite its relatively slow start out of the gate, the Xbox has managed to persevere. It's been on the market for over three years, and it's more popular now than ever before. Many people were initially unimpressed with the Xbox due to its limited library of launch titles, but as the platform has accumulated more games and shown people just what it is really capable of, it has earned the respect of gamers of all ages and preferences.

Sound

While sound may not be the focal point of the Xbox's technical prowess, it's certainly worth mentioning. The Xbox does indeed sound as good as it looks, with full support for Dolby Digital Surround Sound (something that was unheard of prior to the system's release), offering an aural experience unlike any that you'll see on any other console, and far less complicated and expensive than what you'll get from a high-end PC (just like every other technical aspect of the Xbox). All in all, the Xbox can give you the best experience available on a console, all in a system that is extremely efficient and reliable.

Gameplay

The most important aspect of any system's performance in terms of gaming is how well it handles games in an interactive context. A game that looks and sounds great is still a waste of money if the player can't figure out the control scheme, just like a console that doesn't control well in general is a waste of money. Fortunately, the Xbox has shown some strength in this area. Since many of its games are designed specifically for the console's hardware, they control exceptionally well (Halo is considered by many to have the best control scheme of any game on the market). In addition, while many people were turned off by the bulky and cumbersome "Duke" controller that was included with the console when it was first released, the newer "S" controller, designed to be more compact and therefore more efficient, has allowed new players to experience everything that the Xbox has to offer, and has forced critics to find something else to complain about.

Summary

X-box, by far is the best platform now. The only flaw is the 10 pound weight, but if you are willing to sacrifice that, then there is no reason why x-box should not be the top system. Many people tell me PS2 is better but why does it still have two controller ports, no hardrive in it that can save games for you, and no online play where you can talk to your friends? For the controller ports on the PS2 you can get a multiplaer tap but it cost alot and there are few games that are four players. For your game saving if you run out of space in your hard drive each controller has 2 memory card slots.

Sound

All Game systems sound the same to me.

Gameplay

The gameplay is gerat with the standard controllers being ideal for first person shooters. When you play any game your X-box will load some of the data for faster future loads.

Summary

Excellent product for the money! Now alot of great games(GTA series, Halo, ect.)Microsoft put this console together in record time and its paying off. It dominates over the ps2. I like the hard drive. Why should I have to by memory cards? It is greedy of sony to expect you to pay for a system without any real way to save your games. Not to mention the load times on the ps2 are painfully long...The xbox includes everything you need right out of the carton. Oh, so what you have to buy a remote to play dvd. Have you tried the ps2 dvd using a controler(yuck!) Its a game anyway...

Sound

Hooked to a stereo tv, seems on par with ps2.

Gameplay

Excellent, the best of the three all around. It used to be sony had the muscle to have all the good games, no more. xbox is superior with new creative games titles as well. I think its funny how some people wish Halo was avaiable for ps2? That slow thing wont even run the game, I know I owned a ps2(only for gta.)Rockstars gta vice city gameplay is great and really runs alot better on a xbox(looks better too.)Bottom line unless you want to play kiddie games(cube) spend your$149. on an xbox.

Summary

A great console with many advantages. Its the most powerful console you can currenly buy (there is no debate here.. it simply has better hardware.. more bytes and Hertz all 'round) and yet its not the most expensive.

It probably doesn't have a good image with younger gamers: its chunky, bland appearence and badly handled initial release have seen to that. Too many reviewers fall into the trap of 'defending' the xbox.. which is wrong.. its a great console that doesn't need defending, it can stand up for itself.

Unfortunately it also happens to be a Microsoft product - something that will almost certainly put many people off. Microsoft just doesnt have the cool credibility you associate with Sony or Nintendo. Next to Powerpoint though, I reckon this is the best thing to have come from Bills dev-teams since MS-DOS. After months of constant abuse, the 'box has given me nothing but pure gaing pleasure.

Basically, the Xbox is great for older gamers who just want a little light, social gaming every now and again, without having to go into the study and fire up an antisocial PC. Although the current software base is comparatively small, it contains some real corkers and very few complete bummers.

The biggest hurdle the xbox faces is simply that high street games stores simply DO NOT STOCK the full range of software available. This gives a very false impression of the number of titles its possible to choose from. Its easy to see why most people only think there's 20 or so games for the 'box.. whereas in fact there are hundreds.

If you're thinking of buying a console, there are an number of questions you should ask:

1) Am I bothered about hardware and early obsolescence?

2) Do I want to buy games on the high street and trade them with my freinds in the schoolyard? or do I buy on-line and not tell anyone I've lined Bills pockets until I get them 'round to play coop Halo?

3) Am I too old/nerdy to worry about 'cool'? (Alternatively, am I a PC gamer?).

4) Are my hands bigger than your average 12 year olds?

If you answered 'yes, no, yes and yes'.. get and Xbox. 'No, yes, no, no' means you should get a PS2 and if you anwered 'no' to everything, get a Gamecube.

Sound

Great.. dolby digital is superb. I thought the ability to rip your own soundtracks to play in games was a gimmick until I tried it.. now I can race around fast cars to the strains of Audioslave whenever I want. Generally, the extra power of the 'box' helps by providing more audio channels and CD quality D to A.. its all good.

Gameplay

Most of the older games for the xbox had pretty thin gameplay. Not to say they weren't fun games and all.. but lets just say they relied on the 'wow' factor of the then new console quite a bit more than depth of gameplay.

Now the Xbox is in the same situation the PS2 was in 24 months ago, its graphics are basically left in a smoking heap by a half decent PC rig. As a result, we're finally starting to see what the xbox can do in terms of gameplay. The inclusion of a hard drive means that the xbox can bring some really big guns to bear in this department too. The ability to store masses of graphical and user game data means that xbox games can be much more 'PC like', less arcady than those on other consoles. Morrowind showed the way early on, but theres not been too much out to impress since. Now we have Splinter Cell, Pirates of the Caribbean and KOTOR, as well as BC, Rainbow six 3 and Fable to look forward to.. not to mention Operation Flashpoint (damn nearly a simulator).

Although its well deserving the title 'thinking mans console', the xbox also has a great repertoir of lighter, fun games.. most of which are now on budget release. Its a little short on fighting games (yawn).. but theres plenty of motorsport action going on. The Xbox's power really giving and edge to fast driving games. Theres also a vast selection of decent shooters (Halo, Mace Griffin, Timesplitters 2 [yes, I know its a port], Panzer Dragoon Orta, Brute Force, Yager.. phew.. the list goes on and on.).

CONTROVERSIAL STAREMENT: I really like the standard xbox controller. I can see why anyone used to the tiny sony/Nintendo controllers would have problems adjusting, but personally I find the smaller pads give me thumb cramp. The Xbox controllers analogue controlls are a complete joy to use.. really smooth and robust. You read a lot about the design of the xbox pads being 'wrong'.. in fact, its just personal tastes.. xbox controllers are perfectly ergonomic for anyone having hands of a reasonable size. I should also mention that smaller controllers are readily available.

To summarize the xbox's report card in terms of gameplay then, its gone from last years 'C- : Could do better' to a well deserved 'B+ : Shows promise'..

Sound

Sound is the best for many reasons...but one big reason is XBox lets you burn your own music and listen to it in game. Another great thing about XBox is they take advantage of people with big stereo systems in there home. Some XBox games really sound great.

Gameplay

XBox has the best hardware. Anyone that thinks it doesn't is blind. All mags and sites have said this...XBox is the most powerful system. It has a harddrive built in and this is one thing I like the most. You don't need memory cards and it also lets you burn your own music to your harddrive and lets you listen to your own music in game. I have been saving games and burning cd's on my harddrive for 2 years and I still havn't took up even 5% of the space.

I like the controler..it does get the job done. Some say its too big but thats why I like it...I hate small controlers. Only bad thing about the controler is the 4 buttons (A,B,X,Y) can hurt your thumb sometimes when you play for alot of hours in sports games. Aslo it only has 2 triggers...while PS2 has 4 shoulder buttons. But the really good thing is the joy sticks...they work great in shooters and other games. The XBox control has some of the best control in games. The joy sticks on PS2 controlers are too loose and sometimes hard to use in shooters.

I think XBox has alot of good games and some great ones. Its just some people think it should have a huge # of games like PS2. While PS2 does have alot of games...when I had my PS2 it was hard to find many good ones. Also XBox has one of the highest rated games of all time...Halo. Pluss it has some other great games like Star Wars KOTOR and Morrowind. It has alot of good games as well that I love. It also has some great upcoming games and some of the most anticipated...Halo 2, Fable, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Thief 3, Rainbow Six 3, Counter Strike X, Links 2004, BC, Ninja Gaiden, and more. I find it funny that in most mags and sites top 10 upcoming games for PS2 is 80% sequels that have been on PS2. And about 20% XBox games are sequels that have been on XBox.

Summary

A good system but I wouldnt buy it because xbox doesnt have enough good games out for me and I dont think it would be worth buying.I would recommend a gamecube or ps2.Mostly ps2.Let me start by mentioning the bad things about xbox. The system is a little too big which might take up some space, the system doesnt even have a reset button, the controller is bad(I'll talk about that later),there arent alot of good games out for xbox(except for halo),and in order to play dvd's you need to buy the xbox special dvd remote controller.Thats stupid. For ps2 you dont need to buy some controller you control the dvd movie with your ps2 controller which I think is kinda cool.Lets talk about the xbox controller now. It's way too BIG.Its like the controller is for adult hands and makes it harder for kids to use.The grip is ok not too good and not too bad but sometimes my hand gets tired from it.The buttons are a little to closely spaced they need to spreaded out a little farther. In my opinion get a gamecube or ps2.The games are better, the controller for both systems is better and they system itself is better and not to big.

Summary

*Note: Read this because it has info that other reviewers don't mention*!!!!!!!!!

This is a great system just like everyone who give this system a good rating says it is.

What other reviewers don't mention is that this system has problems! 4 of my freinds have xbox and we all encounter the same problem. Which is all our systems crashes alot. We all get a message that says "the disc may be dirty or damage" YES, EVEN WITH NEW DISC. I have had my xbox for about 4 months now it gives me problems. I have owned PS2 for about 2 years now and it still doesnt give me problems.

AND YES, i do take good care of my systems. I still have my N64, SNES, and the orignal PS which can play japanees games without a chip which is 1st version of ps to be realeased. AND ALL THOSE SYSTEMS GIVE ME NO TROUBLE AT ALL!. (xbox has cheap labor i guess)

THE POINT IS IF YOU DONT CARE ABOUT GOING THROUGHT ALL THE TROUBLE WITH GAMES CRASHING, SPECIALLY AT CRITICAL MOMENTS (LIKE WHEN YOU CREATE A SERVER ON XBOX LIVE) GET XBOX, IF IT WASNT FOR THE PROBLEMS IT WOULD BE THE BEST SYSTEMS ON THE MARKET TODAY, BUT IS NOT.

I am more satasfied with ps2.

Sound

Well, the sound is more dependant on the particular game in question, but the Xbox does have a few unique features in this department. Using the Xbox's internal memory, one may save songs onto the Xbox from any CD. Many games will then allow the player to use these songs as part of the soundtrack while playing, which, to me, is a way cool feature.

Gameplay

The Games..... hmmmm.... Well, I personally favor the Xbox games based on the higher graphics quality. Many PS2 owners will argue with me until their throat shuts from dehydration that the PS2 has better graphics. I think it's pretty obvious to most people that this simply isn't true. The fact is that the XBOX can produce some of the most beautiful graphics that I have seen on a gaming system.I feel that these great graphics capabilities enhance the overall playability of the xb
