Dark Cloud for PlayStation 2 Videos >>
Summary At first, I put in the game and thought that it was a Zelda rip-off. It wasn't until after I had battled hundreds of enemies and solved and infinite amount of puzzles that I realized: This isn't like Zelda at all. Well, to be more realistic: this game is similar to Zelda, but only in completely irrelevant ways. I think that Kingdom Hearts is more like Zelda than this. The characters were likeable, and the story was a good, solid RPG type story. Unlike most RPGs, though, you could only use one of six people at a time, and you got your allies slowly, getting only one per dungeon, until the last, where you got nobody. Sound I loved it, to tell the truth. Every place seemed to have the right rhythm and tone for the setting. The sound effects all sounded right, and it never messed up my playing, because it was right under the action, where it would be heard, but not in the way.I do have a problem with the voice acting though. Because there wasn't any! It was just like playing a Final Fantasy on the PS, and I didn't really like that. There were already N64 games that had people talking, and they couldn't spare an extra $40,000 to hire a few no-names to do the voices, it's not like it was a huge game with tons of memory to take up, and it's not hard to put the voices into the game. Gameplay The battles were a little slow compared to other action/RPGs, but they were much cooler than most. You could be surrounded by skeleton warriors, lock on to one, do a simple combo followed up with a Braver-like jumping move and just barely miss the horizontal swipe from a guy behind you. You take out the guy you were locked onto, turn around and repeat on the enemy behind you. When you weren't in a Dungeon, though, everything still retained a good feeling. The days passed into night and back, and certain towns would close up shops and stuff, or maybe you could only catch a fish at night or at dawn or in the middle of the day or etc.... The most innovative feature of the entire game was the Georama engine. Build your own town, either the way you like it, or if you want something, the way that the townspeople like it. Of course, it was a little too simple for my tastes, something that I hear Dark Cloud 2 is working on. The hardest town was the last one, and anybody who's played it knows why. The graphics are good, not stellar but good. The game play is fun. The characters are cool. Although I do like rpg's with more characters this one is just fine the way it is.Best part of my review? If you like this game, you'll love: Final Fantasy X (I can't stand the other ones, but the graphics on this one are stellar, absolutely amazing). The gameplay is just excellent, rent it and you'll want to buy it! Chrono Cross (PS1): This game is completely ahead of it's time. It seems as if they were using PS2 graphics before it even came out. Really fun game. Takes a minute to get used to the types of magic you can use, they go into certain spots according to their power limit. You get way too many characters to ever really be able to play, but man did they put effort into this game. It's amazing, rent it! Sound Sound is fine as much as I could tell. Most of the time I turn the sound down and play my own cd!Gameplay Gameplay was good. At the end you have about 6 characters and you can only play them one at a time. Certain characters are needed to pass certain levels and that's ok. You can even switch during most battles so that works out.The only other thing about the game is building the towns back up. You have to put the homes in a certain way. Some people you talk to will want to be facing a certain direction, or next to another home, so you have to kind of figure that out. At one point I just had to go online and get help, couldn't figure out how to build it correctly. The game is long enough and fun enough! You'll love it. Very much like Zelda without some of the redundant game play features. Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary *Gameplay: Repetitive*Sound: Annoying *Graphics: Pretty Good *Naming your character using sailor words: Priceless Sound The sound on this game is just the same old dun dun dun crap that has plagued many rpg's in the past.Gameplay Gameplay is just the same thing Over and Over. The only fun I got out of this game was naming the main character a certain word that started with an F and ended with an R. I did enjoy building the town, and placing things where they best fit. It had the feel of Final Fantasy VII but didn't get it down.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary I saw commercials and for $20 I thought, hey, why not? It turns out this is a great game, a modern cross between Secret of Mana and Soulblazer with much more functionality. And the weapon build system is great, the best system I've seen since materia(FF7). Although somewhat repetitive, definitely gets you addicted quick, this coming from a guy that has gone through FFT 5 times.Sound The sound on the other hand wasn't that great, it could be much better, very little effort put into it if you ask me.Gameplay Many different angles from which to build your stats, with yet several angles coming against you negatively (like thirst and weapon damage). This is a great buy for people who like to find treasure and build character stats, like me. I have poured in triple digit hours playing games like Harvest Moon or Azure Dreams.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary Basicly a great game that deserves recignition, it has everything an action rpg should have. Great weapon system with little drawbacks.Sound Sound is good except for repetitive music. but the FX are good.Gameplay The gamplay is great in this game and it'll have you hooked for a long time. You can run around the randomly generated dugeons collecting atla at a slow pace or use a Dran's feather withcll double your speed. Smoothe attacks make it fun to. The combat may become a bit repetitve but is almost always fun. Your character never realy gets stronger. You have to bouild up their weapons with items and create new ones and all weapons have about 30 different stat catagories. Your characters attack and elemental powers are upped by the weapon and your defense is increased by special items along with your hp and watter gauge. Then you get to build towns witch is a lot of fun.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member.
