High Heat Baseball 2002 for PlayStation 2 Videos >>
Rating Reviewed By TZ Tim ZeckFrom Des Plaines, Il Review Date 02/17/2002 Overall Rating ![]() 1 of 5 Rate this review? Summary You have got to be kidding me. Most of the reviews on this site show that this is a decent game. I am begining to believe that 3DO owns and operates this website. This is by far the most pathetic baseball game that I have ever played.Sound The sound was drowned out by my friend laughing at me for wasting 50 dollars on this sorry excuse for a baseball game. Please Save your money. Do not settle for the first game out this year like I did please. This game does not even have the 2002 schedule in it. So get ready Cubs fans for all that you can possibly handle of Montreal, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to start your season. 3DO don't even waste your time next year. Stick to something you can handle like Army Men 8. This game is not worth 5 dollars.Gameplay Where should I start. The fielding controls in this game are very simplistic. I thought that the fielding would move more fluidly. After all this is PS2. I think that the way that the batters swing and the pitchers throw is a joke. Very herky jerky swings and unnatural windups. Batting is much to easy in this game. I was playing on the hardest level and I felt no challenge. The batting in this game reminds me of R.B.I. baseball on Nintendo.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary Good: Drafting teams, create player, trade, release, sign free agent, minors A-AAA, D/L, general gameplay.Bad: Some audio issues, "patch" was even a shortcut which disables mound visits, the "taunt" feature doesn't exist, there are player rating consistencies, Tony Eusebio is listed as SS (at least he's on Houston's roster), no contract negotiations/loosing players to free agency. This would be the basis for my vision of the perfect baseball game. You would need to add the front office stuff of Baseball Mogul such as a player's contract expiring and having to resign with an eye towards your budget and prospects. In this game, once you have a player, you own him until you either trade him, release him, or he retires. Tell Oakland that's how it works. Sound You can turn off the music if you don't like it. You can also change the volume settings for sound effects, announcers, crowd, players, music, etc.Gameplay There are different camera views you can select from on the offensive and defensive side and 5 skill levels. It is difficult to strikeout a lot of guys, even with the likes of Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez. Once you develop an eye and learn to go the other way when pitched outside, you realize the key to a consistent offense are guys that have some speed but can still hit (unless you're not actuall playing the games, which I haven't done).Would you like to Comment? Summary 9 -Overall, this is the best baseball video game I've ever played. It has a few flaws, the most annoying of which is the skips in graphics and sound. But this game represents baseball and baseball management extremely well.Sound 6 -This is my one big complaint. The sound in the game is very true life, and the announcers are quite good for a sports video game, but the skips are SO annoying. Several times I've listened to the opening thing and Ray Fosse is talking over Dave O'Brien. I know that this sometimes happens during TV baseball games, but not as often as it does in this game.Gameplay 9.5 -The basic gameplay in this game is simply amazing. The ball physics are very real and keep you immersed for hours. You will never find yourself yelling at your computer because you nailed that Randy Johnson fastball only to find you grounded it weakly to third. If you hit the ball hard, it's gonna be a double, a homerun, or even a triple. The pitching is also very good. You are fairly accurate, but once in a while you'll hang a curve over the heart of the plate. This game also has five difficulty levels, so you'll never be too good to play anymore. All 3DO has to do to make this game perfect is to stabilize the game a little, and polish the graphics.Would you like to Comment? Summary The best baseball game in a long time. Sadly, the other Playstation 2 baseball games came ahead in sales, despite High Heat's superb gameplay. It is a no-brainer to choose High Heat Baseball 2002 over Triple Play Baseball and All Star Baseball 2002, unless you want arcade style baseball (high scoring games). Overall, this is a great game and I got a great deal on it New. If graphics are very important to you along with graphics High Heat 2003 is coming out in March. The screenshots look great.Sound The sound in the game is pretty good. The crack of the bat when the ball is hit is good. The crowd noise also sounds good. The anouncers Dave O'Brian along with another guy are pretty good. Its does get repetitive, though. I wish they had Vin Scully, like they do in the MLB games. The music in the menu screen is pretty good.Gameplay This is where High Heat jumps way in front of Triple Play and All Star. The gameplay is excellent. Unlike, the other PS2 baseball games, High Heat has realistic A.I., good base running, and basically more fun gameplay. In addition, it has dropped 3rd strikes, pass balls, player ejections, etc. The fielding in the game is extremely good and so is the pitcher/batter interface. If you like pitching duels, reasonably low scoring games (depending on the difficulty level you have it on), and an overall great baseball game then go pick up a copy of High Heat, you will be pleasently surprised.Would you like to Comment? Summary I own HH2001, so I had to buy 2002. 2001 was a great game, but it had its problems. Mostly, I'm in it for the career mode. Usually I don't play any games - prefering to build my team up year after year.Luckily for me, the software store where I purchased the game accepts returns. For me, there were no significant improvements over 2001. My biggest gripe is the ratings. I simply cannot understand how year after year I would draft the (seemingly) best pitcher in the draft. They never pan out. After 40 seasons, only one pitcher that I drafted ever made it to the show. I looked at the pitchers that the CPU was taking, and they were right along the lines that I was looking for as far as stats go. This said, every year I can go into the free agents and pick up some young kid who will turn out to be a hall of famer. I just don't understand it. Sound Same as above.Gameplay After about ten seasons in the basement of my division, I have had thirty consecutive seasons winning my division. And by winning my division, I mean WINNING. Minimum of twenty games over the second place team. It seems as if it is too easy to win. Also, the CPU is too generous with their young talent. Often, I could trade for the best player in the draft by offering only a good, proven, but not spectacular veteran.Would you like to Comment? Summary I just bought this game, but since i used these reviews to make my decision to buy it, I feel that I should make a review stating my first impressions. Also, I'd like to say that this is the only site i go to to look up information on a game i am thinking about buying. I can't trust online magazines and whatnot. 30 people's opinions are far more useful. That said, on with the review. The High Heat franchise is increasing everyday, i think. This is understandable, what with the only other major baseball game on the market being the awful (though pretty) Triple Play. While High Heat outclasses Triple Play by leaps and bounds, it feels terribly rushed. Someone else on this site said that they rushed the game so that it would be on the shelves at the same time as Triple Play. I believe it. And it's really too bad, because this game had the potential to be the greatest baseball game ever (besides Earl Weaver for the Amiga 1000). There are a couple of major problems and a few minor problems with this game as well. The sad part is that they could have been resolved rather simply with a little more time. Keep in mind, by the way, that I'm talking about the game AFTER i downloaded the latest patch. I didn't even try it before the download. The two major problems are these: First, a lot of carrer stats are just incorrect. I believe that this problem was brought up by one of the other reviewers and it's true. Many players' first few seasons of stats are simply blank. Its as if they did not play at all for these years. These players end up having very inaccurate career totals. So maybe this isn't quite a major problem, but it's so ridiculously stupid that I can't get over it! However, that problem pales in comparison to the other one. The other one is the inconsistency of player ratings between two lists. What I mean by this is that during the drafting stage of a fantasy draft season, the Hittin, Power, Eye, Fielding, Arm, and Running ratings are completely wrong in the player pool list. On the list, a player's Hitting, Power, and Eye might be 84, 74, 84. Then you double click the name to bring up the player profile and check his rating again there, and they might be 76, 78, 76! This is just awful. There is no point in clicking on a rating to list the players in descending order so that you can evaluate the list to make the best pick. The numbers are just all wrong. It's very annoying drafting a guy you think is great and realizing that he's mediocre. So now my drafting takes 10 times as long because i have to bring up the player profile for each individual player just to see his accurate ratings. At least it's not a total loss because the ratings are rarely more than 10 points off the accurate ratings. However, if you aren't a big baseball fan, and the only players you know are McGwire and Sosa, you're in for a rough time. Some of the minor problems I experienced were: a lot of static background noise, a menu glitch, and terrible music. The same 3 songs just repeat over and over again. And the songs themselves are very repetetive. Also, I didn't agree with many of the player ratings (which is common with sports games). For example Tony Gwynn, one of the best hitters of our time, gets a 60 hitting rating. 60 out of 100. J.T. Snow has a 73. Now, I'm a huge Giants fan, but that's just wrong. And also, all of a sudden, Ellis Burks is the 2nd best hitter in the majors. he is only slightly worse than barry bonds! Ellis has a 92 hitting 100 power and 90 eye (or something like that). Anyway, I'm nitpicking now. Now for the simpler part of the review. read the rest of the review and then come back here.-------------------------------------------------------------------- So, I would say buy this game. It's worth it because it is the best baseball game out this year, by far. It has some glitches and inaccuracies, but i suppose they can be tolerated because of the wonderful, unique gameplay. It'll have you coming back for more, I promise..(even though Tony Gwynn's Hitting rating is a 60.. grrr) Sound Sound..well besides the afore-mentioned static, there is really nothing noticeably bad or noticeably good. The commentary at the beginning of the game is nice. Everything else they say is all very standard stuff..so standard, in fact, that its not annoyingly repetitive. I like this commentary way more than Triple Play's because TP has some very unique phrases and when you are constantly hearing a unique phrase like "and this game is sponsored by Jack's Lobster Soda. mmmm I love Jack's Lobster Soda." it gets unbearable. That stuff has you climbing up the walls after a while. Other than that, the bat's collision with the ball sounds nice.Gameplay Gameplay is wonderful. This game is close to impossible to be good at. On the Pro level, I've lost all three games that I've played. The computer has scored 12, 9, and 8 runs on me and i've scored a paltry 4 total. I have good pitchers, I just always seem to select the wrong pitch. I have gotten maybe 3 K's total. I'm a worse batter, though. Everything looks like a strike to me. I've walked once (it was an intentional walk) and I've struck out well over 30 times total. I keep coming back for more, though, so I guess that that is the mark of a game with great gameplay. I'm not going to get into the rudimentary parts of gameplay because i feel that the other reviews supply plenty of information in that area.Would you like to Comment? Summary If you liked the High Heat 2001 (which any sports game fan that had a functioning brain did), you should have this game by now. 3DO worked hard to make some changes and I would say that they were worked out pretty well. A couple more improvements would be nice (as well as a less-buggy release), but overall it High Heat 2002 is a BETTER version of 2001. Hands-down the best sports series ever made (close behind is NHL series from EA), this game is a MUST have for a fan of baseball, computer games, or those who like a combination of the two.Sound Here is the big problem. Luckily, it doesn't affect the games great points. New commentators, same boring comments. Good heckling, repetitive heckling (same taunt over and over and over!). There are some serious technical issues with the sound because there is skipping and other annoying crap. But don't be too worried. One simple trip to the preferences to turn off the damn heckling will do. And usually I can tolerate the commentating, and when I can't, I turn those bastards off, too. Maybe a future patch will fix this completely, but most of it has to do with certain sound cards regarding EAX problems. They can be fixed.Gameplay Better than ever (and that is NOT easy to say). HH2001 had the best batter-pitcher matchups ever created and HH2002 makes it even more realistic. I can't go into the strategy involved in this game. If you think it is press a button to swing and that is it, then you are horribly wrong. Everything from baserunning to bullpen and injuries to minor leauges are covered. It is really a joy to be able to recruit and place minor-leaugers at levels you think they should be. Injuries now have ACTUAL injuries (only problem is that they always heal when they say they will heal---not to realistic), trades and free agents are also a blast. I have barely even brought up the in-game details. I don't think I can, you just need to play for yourself. Don't settle for the crappy home-run derby of a game (cough, Triple Play, cough), this game actually requires thinking. Lots of nice new touches, like mound visits, and...just read the back of the box. Many complain of it being too hard. Ha! I am in first place in the major leauges with my team batting average at .350 on All-Star level with the Rockies. GAMEPLAY IS THE BEST OF ANY SPORTS GAME AROUND.Would you like to Comment? I added Alex Rodriguez, Jeff Bagwell, Pedro MArtinez, and Chipper Jones . All is good ..I'm 19-6 and in 1st place . The moral to the story is if the game cheats , you cheat more (lol) .Sound The sound is choppy with the announcers and music . I'm not really crazy about it .Gameplay I really like this game .. It takes a bit to tweak it into a style of play you can live with and win with a challenge. I can't get the damn guy to slide on a steal even though I'm pressing the button (don't know whats up with that ) .Would you like to Comment? Fortunately, the more I play the newest version, the better it becomes. Still, I would recommend 2k2 only if you don't have 2k1, as it feels more like an "in-between" game in setting up HH2k3(?). The patch also fixes a few things but inexplicably eliminates the "mound visit" option. Odd. This is a game that cried out for more playtesting.Sound Pretty good. Can't comment on the announcers since the first thing I do with any sports sim is to turn them and the music off. I mean really, why bother? The real TV announcers are usually bad enough, why duplicate that. Stadium announcer, national anthem, and batter walk-up music is choppy (not sure if it's just my system). The in-game menu has a very annoying sound when moving around (tap tap BOOM) and is tied to the "special effects" sound menu control that also controls the bat, mitts, sliding, and other sounds so you can't really get rid of it. Otherwise it's okay.Gameplay The batter/pitcher interface is still tops in baseball gaming hands down, and enough has already been written about it here. The physics of baseball seem to be tweaked a bit better also, especially runners being able to move two bases on softer singles as opposed to the all too often "station to station" running of HH2k1. The ability to modify the physics even more in the txt files is a great option. There are also still the 50 or so stadiums available to call home (same as HH2k1). Career mode and the season simulations still can't be beat, and the stats between CPU controlled and player controlled games are usually very similar.Major gripes: For some reason, fielders still can't pitch and pitchers still can't pinch-hit or pinch-run. Bench substitues are strictly segregated by pitcher or position players. In the lineups, the pitcher goes into the mandatory "pitcher slot" and can't change position like the other players. While normally not a problem, this can be an annoyance during extra-inning games or during a blowout with a tired bench/bullpen. This is a very strange oversight in an otherwise excellent game. Another pet peeve is the new "mound visit" (which the patch eradicates anyway). It only shows a cutscene of a players standing around the pitcher's mound. It would have been nice to see a coach come out there, and better yet to show the pitcher's fatigue level and the bullpen status here. It seems another example of good ideas that were only half thought out in this version. Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. I own All-Star Baseball, Triple Play, and High Heat 2002. I'd rather play High Heat out of any of the three. High heat could improve majorly but if they do it all at one time then they might as well stop making the game because they would have nothing to add. They could have added a create player mode, home run derby (i'd like a game to actually have that during the all-star break with the top four going from each League) ummmm a franchise has yet to be made for a baseball game that i know of at least. This would be hard considering how many players are in baseball. Farming Systems with hot prospects would be nice as well. There are many other things they could add. But by the time all of these are in one game it'll probably be around 2010. But look for it =)Sound While playing high heat just turn the volume all the way down and put in your favorite cd and just go with that. TRUST ME ON THIS. This "play-by-play" commentator sucks really bad. I'd rather listen to flushing toilets the whole time. Im not kidding either, thats the sad thing.Gameplay GREAT. I never get tired of the game. I bought it the day it came out and i still play it. While sometimes things get out of hand (i once gave up 4 straight home runs in Coors with Astacio) it still rocks. All-Star is pretty frustrating. It's a great game too but the outfielders are far too slow and have an arm like my grandma. Triple Play just plain sucks. If you own it then enter the home run derby with Danny Graves (closer for the reds) i hit 57 with him. Ridiculus.Would you like to Comment? This is a realistic baseball game not a homerun fest like that other game Triple Play.Sound The sports announcers are good there always right on top of their calls. The only thing I don't like about the sound is when the players step up to bat there's to much rock wats up with that. Also even with the patch there seems to still be some sound glitches where the annoucer may talk over each other. Besides that it's the best announcing ever in a baseball game.Gameplay The pitcher/batter interface is the realest ever if you don't mix up your pitches well and change locations you will get rocked just like in real baseball and if you chase bad pitches your not going to hit them just like real baseball. All aspects of the game are real from pitching to running bases and even catching the ball. Also this game has real scores because of real pitching so your games wont be 15 to 5 everytime. This game even has batting and pitching practice so you can practice your skills. There's no longer a need to worry about those bugs since the patch is now here just download it and all of those bugs are gone.Would you like to Comment? Some minor flaws that are more than overwhelmed by the gameplay. Playing this game will become very addicting, I have played well past the all-star break with the cubs. One more interesting thing, rosters are terribly inaccurate, for instance, Benny Agbayani is absent from the Mets. He has been playing for them for 3 years now.Sound A Very good soundtrack, but very mediocre at best in-game sounds. When you hit the ball, the bat's sound doesn't sound real at all. Once again the gameplay saves the game.Gameplay The most accurate physics that I have ever seen in any baseball game ever. Fly balls hit off a slanted wall will bounce all over, and cause nightmares for the outfielders. The game has the most peculiar options as well. You can even see the umpires strike zone and compare it to the real strike zone! Batting is easy to pick up, but hard to master, making it very fun. If you don't have pitching, then you can't win in hh2002. You should throw a ball outside the strike zone when the batter has two strikes, often leading to a strikeout.Would you like to Comment? It's not worth the forty bucks to upgrade from SSHH2k1. It is, however, a VERY good game. ALl the people who played it for all of 10 hours then wrote bad reviews here are idiots! Granted, it has a few bugs, but is it that hard to log onto Voodoo files or ZDNet to download a superb patch?Sound Again, the sound of Height is a strong point. Players talk, comment and act realistically. THe announcer is right on target, occasionally giving away the outcome, i.e. he crushed that means HR.Gameplay The gameplay in this year's version is not much different, but there are hundreds of subtle changes that make the game even better and much more realistic. Gone are the "bean bag" hits off the wall, they now carome at realistic speeds. Gone too are the lasers out of the infield that die in the outfield, resulting in doubles. The tune files of this year is superb, anyone who thought the game was too easy or too hard should just modify the tune file. DOn' listen to anyone who says the game is too hard or too easy no matter what the difficulty level, they are just too lazy or ignorant to modify the tune.txt. it took me all of five minutes to get the game perfect for me, raise the pitch velocity, sharpen the runner speed and harden groundballs on astroturf. After playing the monstrosity that is Triple Play, anyone will take the bugs with this one over that waste of a CD.Would you like to Comment? I find them too unwieldly, particularly the football games. I'm just not that fast, and most of these sport sims just leave me frustrated and exhausted. But not so with High Heat Baseball. I'm at pro level which is only a little tougher than rookie, and I'm holding my own against the opposition.Sound Sound plays well at the plate. If you connect well with a ball you hear a good crack! If you don't you also hear that, and the ball takes off from your bat accordingly. The announcers do a pretty good job, although they can be monotonous at times, repeating the same thing again and again. "Here comes the always dangerous so and so..." ad infinitum is one example. But then, what announcer doesn't have his ad infinitum, ad nauseum style that makes you want to puke? I guess you could look at it as an unwanted taste of realism if you like. The crowd noises are the best I've ever heard in a game. They really seem to get into it, and when you catch a batter sleeping or swinging away at a strike three call, it's a rush to hear the crowd's approval.Gameplay I like the speed of the gameplay. You don't have to have lightning fast reflexes to get to the ball on time like in many sport games. The computer is generous with high hanging flyballs and slow grounders that gives you enough time to get to them. I also like the idea that it takes only the press of one button to throw to the various bases. Pitching is fun as well. It's easy to fool and be fooled in pitching which is really what the game of baseball is all about. The heart of the game begins and ends with pitching, and if you pitch well in High Heat Baseball, you will be rewarded for it, so heads up! This game respects a smartly played game.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary It is a good game and it is fun to play but we are taking it too easy on these video game companies who continue to charge large sums of money every year for the newest version of a game 98'99'00' ect. While in return we get games with very little real improvement and huge oversites! I know the makers in the game have to see some of these problems before they release the game and they don't do anything about it so they have something to improve on next year. The bottom line is that we need to start getting a return on our PS2 investment. It is not acceptable to give a game a good rating just because it happens to be the best baseball game.( In this case, it is a race to the bottom) It should get a good rating because it stands on it's own merit and it delivers what we expect (and more) out of a PS2 game. There are some good things about the game however. Below I will address both the positives and negatives of high heat 2002Sound The sound kicks. I like the music "get ready for the launch!"Gameplay The Gam play is fun and it keeps you attention long enough for the experience to be considered worth while. However the are some huge oversites.1-the rosters are far from accurate, no Ichiro? No Julio Zuleta on the Cubs but they do have Cory Patterson? In general in does not effect gameplay, but if your playing with one of your favorite teams and they don't have one of your favorite guys it is not as much fun. 2-Baserunning- no burst of speed button is a huge mistake. After you hit the ball your hardly pressing any buttons it's like your just watching. For those of us who grew up on NHL 93-2001, the lack of activity is a drag. 3-It drives me crazy when the screen says that one of my pitchers just got tired and sat down, even though he is on the mound! Also, when they say "and next up...the always dangerous Julian Tavaraz" He's a pitcher! He's not dangerous. My motto: If you can't say something accurate don't say anything at all, it hurts the credibility of the game. Would you like to Comment?
