Sound

The guns sound full. The voice acting is mostly good. All of the main charachers are done decently. Well, not the asian chick. But everyone else. Really who cares about her, although great voice acting from everyone adds to a game. The music is terrible. A hot soundtrack would have blessed this game, but the bad one it has doesn't damn it. Simply use hot soundtracks from your own collection.

I would like to see more nice looking stuff like the disarms put into a sequel, or any game for that matter. Fast and smooth, and not in slow motion. I would also like to see a charachter stylishly using more of the objects in a room like tables, walls and railings. He should jump off walls, slide down rails, roll over tables, tuff like that.

In Dead to Rights you'll have a good time being Chow Yun Fat. However after hours of die and start over, die and start over, die and start over, you may feel like every one of Chow Yun fat's victims put together into one continuously dying charachter.
Still, there are more than enough good moments where you ARE Chow Yun Fat as opposed to being a victim OF Chow Yun Fat to make the game worthwhile over all. You'll pat yourself on the back for being good enough to complete it, too.

My 5 stands for good or passable. My 1 stands for not passable. There is no in between.

Gameplay

After 50 reviews, you already know the mechanics of this game. You must target an enemy to shoot him. You can take a leap, and if you hold the leap button the leap is in slow motion. You can crouch, which may sound useless but crouching behind boxes and such is one fifth of the things that keep your desperate behind alive. You can back up onto a wall and scoot to the edge to peek out or roll out and shoot people. There is a dog that you can sic on the bad guys, which is an automatic kill and will get you their weapon. There are disarms, moves that grab the gun from a bad guy and kill him in a stylish way. Finally, there is the ability to grab a guy and keep him in front of you so that he absorbs incoming fire for you.
Gameplay is a mixed bowl. One the one, bigger hand, the game is a blast to play. When the levels are sniper free and there are plenty of things to hide around, you're basically the dancing gunman Chow Yun Fat himself. Stand behind a door and hear 'here he comes!', and an unlucky guy opens the door to kill you. You rush to him and grab him. Immediately he's a human shield and you're blasting away with you're shot gun, one hit kills for the guys that are close to you. To the left, dead, to the right, dead, and finally the man absorbing your bullets drops down dead from a fatal gunshot fired from a man behind a box. As he falls your two .50s come out and you take a dive to the left, no slo mo, in real time, taking the guy behind the box out. Now with a pillar between you and the bad guys, you scoot to its side with your back against it to take a peek into the open. 3 guys looking for cover, you switch to your akm rifle and rool out to blast the living crap out of each one. On to the next room.
Moments like these make you say 'what is everyone talking about, this game is awesome. oh well, i guess i have special taste.'
Then there are other moments that will bring your desperate-to-be-pumped-up-for-something self down to reality again. You will die many times and it wont be fair. You usually start a huge chunck of the level over again when you die, which does add very important tension to the gunfights because its a severe penalty but when its time to pay the piper then its a real pain. This is the foundation of what is frustrating with this game. Sometims the programers just put you in an open pit and place dudes with sniper rifles and machine guns all around you and say 'live'. And it will NOT be fun to repeatedly NOT live. The fighting is a specific example of this. Some people say that the fighting sucks all around the board because its too hard. I think that these are people who haven't felt the fighting system completely out. Its simple enough with basic punch and kick combos, a defensive position, and a throw move. It seems you should be able to punch punch kick kick through every body, cause its so simple. You can't, or you'll get your butt kicked. Basically, each enemy will dodge half of your attacks and counter attack immediately while you are open, hitting you with a 4+- hit combo. With three guys who have one third the life you have, this means you wont die. Usually though there are 30 or more people to fight at once. This means that you will die in big fights. You can't save anywhere in the level, you'll die, you'll start aaaall the way over again, knowing that you don't know how to survive that part you died in and that you will die again. You will be angry, and if you're an angry person you will be livid.

The disarms are usually nice, although these are not what help the game register at John Woo levels. People don't mention that they are useless in most gunfights. I didn't use them much, and you probably wont either. They require you to disarm yourself, walk into the open, and stay there for a little while. The beauty is in skillfully taking cover, and its in diving every so often.

Summary

To say this game is hard is an understatement. I've never played a game where I had to do a level/chapter over and over again like I have in DTR. When I first started the game I hated ita nd regretted buying it However, once I got by a few chapters I started to really enjoy it even though it was frustrating as hell.

The thing I really dislike about it is that you can't save it at any point. How many times did I struggle through a level and finally complete it just to get blown away by some bad dude who comes out of nowhere. I can't begin to tell you.

The game automatically saves after each sub-chapter within the main chapter, but it should save at different intervals in the sub-chapter as well. There are too many bad guys. The worst is when the game saves and you have hardly any energy left. This happened to me during chapter 4 when the game saved and I was left out to dry when I had to go up the stairs and fight the backup Chinese dudes. AS soon as I head up the stairs, the snipers would pick me off. I must have tried a thousand time to do it, but I ended up getting so frustrated that I went online and got the cheat code to open up all the remaining chapters. I had to skip chapter 4 because there was no possible way of getting by it once it saved when I had no energy. This is a major drawback of the game. You also can't retrace your steps to find health once the game saves automatically.

All-in-all, it's a fun game, but be prepared for your blood pressure to rise significantly out of frustration.

Sound

I have doby digital surround and it sounded great. The guns could have a little more punch to them.

Gameplay

The gameplay is a glaring problem in this game. The shooting parts of the game are great. I had almost no problems in this area. Holding thugs for shields hiding behind walls and popping out were all fantastic features. The hand to hand combat though is just awful. Like previously said there is no group attack which just drove me crazy. You cant even attack behind you or switch between enemies while you are attacking one. They should have taken a page from Buffy. The combos are just punch punch kick. No creativity here. The mini games were ok. Some of them you think your fingers are going to fall off from pushing the A button so many times. The stripper scene will make you so mad because it takes 10 MINUTES. One other thing that is lame is is takes less punches to kill a guy than bullets. I didnt find it as challenging as some of the other reviewers. (It only took me about 20 minutes to beat the massage parlor.)
