Summary

Finally, a comic book hero has managed to be transferred over to a videogame in full glory. unlike multiple previous attempts, Spiderman succeeds where others have failed. Rather than make another one of those "look, a popular movie's coming out, let's hurry and rush a videogame out based on the same thing," Treyarch actually took time and effort to make this the great game that it is. They managed to accurately display Spiderman in all his lustor. He looks great as he swings from building to building, in the seemingly neverending New York City; while he performs amazing fighting techniques from his plethora of moves, and while he shoots web balls at various Marvel villains, etc. Also, this videogame went beyond the Movie's shadow- expanding upon it. The Green Goblin will be the only nemesis to SpiderMan in the movie, but in the game you can battle multiple bosses, including Shocker, Vulture, Scorpion, Kraven (Xbox version), and the Green Goblin himself. these villains were also beautifully portrayed. it's so fun to finally step into the costume and battle these foes for yourself!
Some people claim that the game is too easy. However, there are multiple difficulty levels and tons of cheats and achievements such as playing through the whole game as The Green Goblin's son, Harry. with the plot altered in these situations, it becomes basically two separate games in one box. So, as one can see, there is much fun to be had.

I do have one complaint with the game, though = the camera angles. Unfortunately, it's a minor complaint. At first, the camera angles are a little bothersome, (but only after a lot of first-person Halo or something ;) ), but you gradually begin to get used to the camera angles and eventually you don't even notice them. also, there are several techniques you can use to center the camera as well as changing it from 'Active' to 'Passive.' So there are ways 'around' this problem if for some reason you don't get used to it.

Great game, a must-buy.........4.9/5

Sound

Terrific!!! the voice-overs are GREAT!! i was happy that the actors in the upcoming movie actually helped out in the game. Toby Maguire and Willem DaFoe, both in the movie, lent their voices to their characters, Spiderman and The Green Goblin, respectively. Also, all the effects such as Spiderman's grunts when he gets hurt, windows breaking, and fire burning are all right on.

My only beef with the sound/voice overs in this game is this: Why didn't Kirsten Dunst do Mary Jane's voice in the game? I understand i should dock the game points for this, because it was her personal decision, but i really would've liked to hear her voice in the game!...........4.9/5

Gameplay

this is where the game really shines. Spiderman has never looked so good. the player can utilize dozens of classic Spiderman techniques, including loads of cool web tricks, while also making hand-to-hand combat look cool. those tricky camera angles are the only things that would bring the score down a bit..........4.8/5

Summary

The style of this game outweighs the substance. The designers and writers directed this game toward the gaming audience by virtue of the numerous quips made by spiderman and his sardonic trainer.Your initial raction is overwhelming as learning to control all of his powers is quite a task at times.Moving about is awkward and sometimes extremely difficult to control. There were occasions where the mobility and agility of the super nimble and slick spider man were actually detrimental, whereby having these powers should be just that, powers bestowed to grant the hero an ease and freedom to overcome physical obstacles. Once you get accustom to the play it is more enjoyable. However, the style is well overplayed but the substance is a bit lacking in the gameplay. The sequences between events and levels are more enjoyable than playing,as I looked forward to the drama onscreen by talented game designers.Being more of a passive Spiderman fan,the venue of a spiderman game is a terrific venture and does make the setting for gameplay quite enticing. One does get the sense that you are entering another world as transported in the role of spiderman.

Sound

The sound is adequate, the music while in nonplaying modes I suppose is fitting. The actual sound of the webslinging does have a moist or ejaculating sound attatched to it.The score does try and ampliphy the danger and turmoil. The sound is best experienced when felt through the controls, like when shocker sends his waves at you and you not only hear it but feel it through your nerves from the vibrating controls.

Gameplay

The gameplay is fair overall.Dispensing of petty thugs is tiresome and peculiar,as I do not understand why someone with such abilities has so much trouble in a mere melee. With considerable physical abilities I presume I could easily handle a common brawler with one swift blow. This is not the case. The combos, albeit acrobatic, only work 50% of the time and are not easily executed. One must simply press buttons aimlessly in order to out box villains. The agility of spiderman is haphazard and escaping from certian scenarios is less skill and more luck,as I escaped onslaughts by merely pressing buttons in a blind fury. The camera angles are difficult ,granted spiderman is capable of such awkward movements and can adhere to anything, but you must be precise, and keeping the camera angles straight so that you can simply walk or run through tight spots is hard at times. The web powers against attackers is useless,I dont understand how his webbing can be both superstrong and durable yet a bound common thug can become unfettered in a matter of one second. I do give the designers credit as the gestures and movement in terms of animation is well done.Im sure the criticisms will dissipate after more experienced gameplay. I must say that overall the handling of movement through space is tackled with care.Because of Spidermans super slick and speedy movements,it does create problems with camera angles as one must delay your courde of action because he can move and sling about in such a quick fashion, that you can not determine exactly where you are at a given time. The camera angle is limited to where you are,and you do not have peripheral vision, making you feel claustriphobic at times.
However, all in all, gameplay is exciting and because the action is focused on an arachnoid/human the designers can only do so much to make the game easily played. For the more advanced the gamers can render time and space as a playable setting the more frenzied the camera angles will get.I must say,and I may come across as contradictory, that it is an enjoyable game on many fronts.Spiderman can move about in such a uniquely odd fashion that no hero or gaming character can move quite like him.

Summary

I've been reading Marvel comics for years and eagerly anticipated an accurate video game portrayal on the XBOX. Unfortunately, Spiderman:The Movie is a mix bag. If you separate everything you know about the real Spiderman and his abilities from this game, then you can enjoy the video game. But as I played the game it was depressing to have to brawl with thugs, Spidey should be able to dispatch thugs with ease. Spidey can pick up a car in the game, but has to brawl with thugs to overcome them. Also, jumping and evasive action is so wild and imprecise you absorb a lot of damage from gunfire. This shouldn't be the case. Spidey webs up his enemies and they break free in seconds, this should be the case with the Scorpion, but not thugs. Webbing is almost useless at times when fighting. You can't pick up enemies, or grab them etc. And combos fighting removes, precise fighting. So you can't punch, block, or kick the way you would like, you have to do a combo and hope it comes out right. When I play this game as Spiderman, I feel as though Spidey's powers reduce his effectiveness and I feel tied up, not the enemies. Don't get me wrong, the game is not hard, its actually quite easy, however fighting is just an erractic, button mashing excercise.
The reason why the game is easy, is because the computer AI is non-existent. Once you figure out the routine of characters like the Scorpion, you can defeat him in less than a minute. And it seems kinda odd, you would have more problems with thugs than the Scorpion.
Finally, Web-swinging and fighting is also simplified. Basically you swing, release the swing and punch or kick at your enemy as you fly by, or you may shoot a web shot at them. Sometime you can land on their back and punch them, though this is rare. I can't say don't buy this game, because it does some things well and the characters like Shocker, Spidey, and Scorpion are beautifully done, but don't expect a quality gaming experience or a challenge. I mowed through a good number of levels in short time. This game deserves to be rented without a doubt, but buying this game is a stretch.

Sound

The sound is good. DolbyDigital5.1 is employed, however not impressive in this game. With Spidey swinging through the air and enemies coming from every direction, there was ample opportunity for the developers to employ directional dolby digital, but this seems to have not been stressed. The voice acting is done by the actors from the movies, and while some have complained about Toby's "lackluster" approach, I think his voice-acting is right on par with the verbiage Peter Parker uses in the mags. The Vulture's dialogue is particularly sharp and witty. Music is not bad, not good either, it doesn't get in the way.

Gameplay

Gameplay is, unfortunately the weakest part of this game. Spidey moves very well, walking, running, web-swinging. Spidey fights awfully. His web-attacks are almost useless. Thugs and enemies break-free in seconds, the Scorpion is all but immune to Spideys webbing. This is all very inconsistent with Spidey heritage. The webbing, was a big issue for me. Kicking and Punching is a button mashing excercise. There seems to be no correlation between the users input and spidey's actions on the screen. Why? Because fighting is tied to combo moves. If you like combos, you will like this game. To me, this is awful. Press a certain button combo and spidey does a move. Its very imprecise and makes fighting enemies a wild experience, rather than a precise accurate attack. Spidey can stick to walls and this is done very well. Again, moving Spidey around is cool, fighting is not. Jumping and attacking is also haphazard and limited. Another thing is Spideys strength. You can pick up cars, for example, but it takes several punches to down a thug. Spidey's punches do no damage alone to the likes of Scorpion, but if you do a tackle combo move, you can beat Scorpion in less than a minute. So, gameplay is a mixed bag, moving spidey around is a pleasure, fighting is a wild unbalanced ride, that doesn't synch at all to the Marvel Spidey.

Sound

The sound is also pretty good, the music on some of the levels can get a bit annoying at times, but not nearly as bad as some other games. The voices are above average and lot better done than the original game(less cheasy). All in all though the sound effects good, the explosions, gunshots, etc.all sound great.

Gameplay

The controls in this game are amazing, You have a very large number of combos(they are unlocked as you progress in the game)that allow you to do things from webslinging to uppercuts, roundhouses, Throws, and you even get an ability where you can use swing your foes around in a circle and have them knock out other foes. The only slight problem that the game has at first is the camera, but after about 15 minutes into the game you will have it mastered. It is not nearly as bad as people say that it is.

Sound

This is the only part that doesn't really shine. The voice acting is good because it has Toby Mcguire of the spider-man movie doing the voice of spider-man. The music is necassary but can get annoying.

Gameplay

The gameplay is great. As I said before the camera can be tricky at times but not enough to frustrate. The outside levels are fantastic and one of the funnest of any game I have played. you can websling for long distances and fight in mid air. AWESOME!! this is what a real spider-man game should be like. Also when you are fighting crooks and thugs you can use many different types of attacks. You can also use stealth on the thugs. The best thing of all though is the extras that come with the Xbox version. You get 2 new levels and it includes the almighty and one of the most famous spider-man villians, Kraven the Hunter. No other version of Spider-man on any console has these extras. Since Spider-man was not planned for the xbox at first, I think it was Activisions way of apologizing the fans and adding something a little extra. So just that makes the xbox version the ultimate version of the game.

Summary

Well being an owner of both Xbox and playstation 2 i waited anxiously for it to arrive at a local store. Well they only got the PS2 version which i bought because i am impatient, the next day the xbox version came in and i sold my PS2 version to him and went out and got the Xbox version. Now the PS2 controller seems much more adapted for this game but the Xbox is fine it just takes a little more practice. Also the xbox graphics are obviously head and shoulders above the PS2 version. Ive read of complaints of the camera. It can be tricky at times but you have a compass and height meter and as long as you use those then you will be fine and not lost. One little tip, if you height meter is even with your target and you are following your compass only to have it shift directions all of sudden then the target is below you. A very enjoyable game that follows the storyline of the movie i am very pleased with it and both versions are great. The lockon feature made popular by ZELDA is present and very useful to lock onto enemies. Like i said the learning curve will take you just a little while due to the xbox buttons being close and in all the chaos you might miss hit a kick button or punch button but after awhile it becomes second nature. go get this game if you are a spiderman fan.

Sound

The sound is a small complaint I have. Becuase any game's music gets repetive and annoying very fast, I usually turn off the game's music volume and just play with fx and ambient sounds turned on only. With Spider-Man it almsot seems that his world is in a air-less vacume becuase most of the time; indoors, you don't hear a lot of ambient noise--wich breaks the spell of enchantment.

Gameplay

Webswinging has never been so fun or seemed so realistic! New York looks great and the frame rate is even smoother at a constant 60fps. Though my biggest complaint is the camera movement--annoying and distracting. That is one big reason why I don't like 3rd Person Shooters and prefer First Person Shooters. But overall it is a great improvement from the previous Spider-Man game from Playstation One, especially the zip-line function, which is easier to aim and less akward to pull off.

Sound

The sound, just like every other xbox game is in Dolby Digital and it does sound really great. I play my games on a Sony 53" TV with a $3000 Harmon Kardon Amplifier, Paradigm Speakers and Spidey uses everything. The game has really great sound separation. When a guy is coming up from behind it sounds really cool. The music is great, I am not sure if it Danny Elfmans soundtrack from the movie but it has a very super hero feel to it. Overall very impressive.

Gameplay

The gameplay is great. The advanced control scheme is a nice refresher from the old controls. It allows for a lot of specific controls. It does take a while to figure them all out but once you do...man its great to control Spidey flying through New York. The xbox controller seems a little big at the beginning as all the buttons seem a little too far apart, but just like the controls you will finally figure everything out. The training mode is great, having Bruce Campbell (Army of Darkness) talk you through the game is really cool, and it does help you out a lot later in the game.
