It had classic games like GTA3, Vice City, Madden etc.... no need to go on about the games; we all know how good they were. One thing that really bummed me out about this console was when it took a turn for the worst, after having it for about 2 years, and refused to read any of my discs. I played it somewhat regulary, it's not like I was on the thing for 10 hours a day or anything. I might have played it around 3 or 4 times a week for a couple hours at a time at most... A little bit more when the GTA games came out, but still nothing as crazy as how some people rock out with their videogames. I tried to clean the eye of the reader and that didn't work and since it was a couple years old it wasn't really worth spending however much money it was to fix it. I definitely still remembered the $300 price tag I paid for it when I first got it an I can't say I didn't feel a substantial amount of disappointment that it only lasted 2 years.Strength All around amazing when it first came outAwesome games Weakness Only lasted 2 years even though it cost $300Would you like to Comment? Summary I have spent the last 3+ years playing my Xbox. Then I began to look at the library of games available for the PS2 and decided to go ahead and pick one the new design PS2. Gameplay is the best part of this system with the broadband now included and great games available. I was a little disappointed with bothe graphics and sound. I was also not happy with the fact that the new PSTwo cannot be used with the harddrive.Sound Not the best sound quality - need more support of DD 5.1.Gameplay This is certainly the best aspect of the PS2. A tremendous library of games, free online play - can't go wrong here.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary I am not going to tell people what system they should be buying because all of the systems are great, just some systems are better for different people. In my opinion the Gamecube is for people who love Mario, Zelda, and etc. The X-BOX is for people who love online play, first person shooters, and racing games. And the PS2 is for people who love action/adventure games, and tend to not like first person shooters. In my case i hate first person shooters, and love the games that the PS2 have to offer.Sound The sound for the ps2 is good, the only complaint i have is that when listening to a CD or watching a DVD, you have to blast your TV to hear anything. In game sound is great, as good as any other system. The sound just depends on the game that you are playing at the time.Gameplay The thing i like about the PS2 is the controller!!! it is the same one from the PSone. There was no learning a new controller for this system it was great. I put in my game and it felt like the PSone with much better graphics. Im not saying that all games have great gameplay for the PS2, but alot do, same goes for all other gaming systems out there.Would you like to Comment? Summary Its well known I'm primarily a PC and X-box owner, but I know enough about the PS2, and know enough freinds that own them, to feel a review is appropriate. I also feel I've logged enough gamepad-time on the PS2 to be able to give the system a decent, un-biased review. I don't work for Sony, or Microsoft, or Nintendo, so why on earth would I want to be biased towards any particular system? The X-box is often the brunt of a lot of anti-Microsoft feeling. As a musician and a computer enthusiast, I have more than equal amounts of contempt for both multi-national coporations. For that reason I reckon the Gamecube wins the console race hands down on sheer political correctness. Despite any critisism I, or any other review, might level at the PS2, its sales figures do, indeed, speak for themselves. Despite dwindling performance and impressive competition, the PS2 has been pulled out of the fire time and time again by well marketed software franchises and gimmicks. Most recently by the party and kids freindly eye-toy and by the thinly veiled eroticism of the Final Fantasy ladies. Perhaps its a result of their experiences in the music industry, but Sony is the master of the clever marketing ploy.. its always been much better at selling consumer electronics than actually making them competetive. The word 'playsation' has almost come to mean 'games console' in the english language.. unfortunately for nintendo and microsoft you just can beat that kind of market domination. Im sure that subsequent generation of consoles will all be dominated by technologically weak sony products for years to come as well.Sound Theres not a lot to say about the sound.. Again, its pretty much left in the dust by every other gaming platform on the market. A huge percentage of us still plug our consoles soundcard straight into the TV though, so as long as reproduction is clear and in stereo, there isn't too much to complain about.Gameplay As a houshold gadget, the PS2 looked great when it came out.. sleek and futuristic and smaller than your VCR. Time hasn't been good to the Sony box though, and its no looking a bit tacky and old-hat as a design. Great if your into that black 80's retro thing though. The construction of the hardware has really stood the test of time. Most PS2 owners I know have rarely needed to spend money on maintenance of their consoles, other than the occasional new controller (usually after having smashed the old one repeatedly againsed the wall whilst playing Tombraider). A possible edge over the Gamecube and Xbox is the PS2's innate ability to play DVD's out of the box (the Xbox requires you spend about 15 bucks on a DVD 'kit', and the GC just cant do it, period). Unfortunately DVD playback is a bit shabby compared with even the cheapest dedicated DVD player, its a good feature though, and handy for those wanting to kill two birds in one stone. Backward compatability with the PS1 is pretty much a moot point these days. I don't know anyone who would DREAM of shoving thier old PS1 games into their PS2, especially when they can simply be traded in for a discount at the local game store. The PS1 was a previous generation console.. the games do look pretty dated and the most popular have been 'replaced' by better looking, better playing sequels or clones for the PS2. An excellent example of this is the Tekken and Virtua Fighter series. Possibly the best selling point of the PS2 is the sheer quantity of titles available for it. Theres so much variety its truly mind boggling, but beware gentle gamer, the PS2's repertoir is soiled by many utterly disasterous games. That said, theres some really good, playable titles out there (TS2, Gladius etc..) too that are well programmed, contain original, interesting gameplay and generally stand out well from the mountain of dross. If your on a budget, the low cost of many older PS2 games might seem to point you in that direction. Unfortunately the necessity of buying expensive memory cartridges for your PS2 game data may well niggle when you could be spending the money on more games instead. Visiting freinds who own PS2's often results in having to tip-toe around numerous memory cardridges strew all over the living room floor. Worse still is the invonvenience of having to locate the right cartridge for the right game, and the ugly mess of the cartridge itself, jutting out from your games console like an expensive diving board, totally ruining the appearence of the system. On a more positive note.. the PS2 is the home of all the big franchises: Metal gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Gran-Tourismo and GTA are all nearly household names thanks chiefly to their excellent quality. Although most of these are now being ported onto the other consoles, its obvious that there is never going to be a final fantasy or Tombraider game on the Xbox (knowing my luck, there will probably be one on the shelves by the time you read this). Most devolpers are now seeing the financial sense of including the Xbox, the PS2s chief contender, in their release platforms. With even rockstar finally playing ball with the excellent GTA3 double pack. The cynic in me firmly believes this is partly due to a number of high quality GTA-a-like titles being released on Xbox and Cube last year. Mostly though, the best the other consoles can do in many cases is to simply produce suerior products. The Xbox's project Gotham series effectively out Gran Tourismo's Gran Tourismo. Dead or Alive III and Tao Feng replace Tekken and Mortal Combat all too easily. The recent Indiana Jones game even gave PS2 stalwart Tombraider a run for its money. With the exclusivity of PS2 games dwindling, and the limitations of the platform limiting what can be done in the future. It does start to look bleak for Sonys machine. The other consoles can simply overpower the weakling PS2 with sheer gaming muscle, and at no extra cost!! Enter the PS2's saviour however, in the unlikely form of add-on gadjets and party games like the eye-toy dance mat, and linux operating system!. These curiosities require much less power than an actual game, and are apparently selling in thier millions.. go figure! The future of the PS2? The 'non gamers game console'.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary Note that the price is in Aus dollars. The thing is a Lukewarm Mtv machine. It's like the Linkin Park of Consoles. Alot of double digit IQ Automatons think it's the accomadator ofall forebearance of greatness, when taken from a laterally conscious assessment, the machine does little that is special. It plays PS1 games? who cares, thats a rosy tinted gimmick. It plays DVD? who cares, nowi have paid for 7 DVD units to lay around the house. SONY is ultimately hypocritical in their mediocrity, because at the launch of PS1, they were ferocious with their condemnation of NINTENDO as being uncreative and stale (citing: "Heck, even the games are using all the same characters"), yet SONY releases a console at a grotesque price bracket, with the stellar selection of Ridge Racer 5, and Madden 200-whatever, and the only redemption Fantavision (but hardly a killer-ap) releases a machine that is heinous to code, and after protracted effort delivers results that are sub, a far friendlier effort on other machines. Has exactly the same Controller mold, hell they even call it Playstation "2", and SONY (namely Ken Kutaragi) have the gall to accuse NINTENDO of milkage (which they are anything but guilty of, at their own expense), Takes 12/18 months to establish a "release flow" of software. Spends all of it's build up hyping and hyping (and then Hyping) all of the miraculous revolutions that will take place on this AMAZING new machine. Then what arrives? mostly sub Dreamcast aesthetics with a potentially improved poly count ifthe developer was an Ivy Leaguer, a patheticdirge of Roaming beat em ups, and stale piece of crap shooters without a whiff of innovation, mostly just games which could be executed the same way on Dreamcast or Playstation 1 even. Where is the emotion? where is the revolution? boom fizzle. It didn't happen.Sound The one region it can keep up with. There are scrutable advantages between the machines (mostly in favour of XBOX), but the layman ear wouldn't find any detectable descrepency between them. At this stage its a moot point?Gameplay The same control pad, the same endless barrage of uselessly retreaded formulaes that were garbage in the first place, with the occasional blip of interest (Ico is hardly revolutionary, but atleast it's fresh). What this machine needs now is more poor running FPS', more roaming beat 'em ups, and damn it, how about a car racing game already. Oh geee, how about shockingly origional Final Fantasy game. I can't believe it. It'sno factor of Bias, that Square started to suck to me, after they left Nintendo. Square the horse is dead, cut the thing up, chew and swallow already. Oh wait, people are dumb, my bad, keep mackin them. It's mild redemption with the odd advancement like MGS2 scores it added marks for gameplay.Would you like to Comment? Summary I cant believe that people would give this machine such a poor review..In that case every system should receive a piss review. Each system has its strenghts, and hit has its weakness.Look the playstation2 is backwards compatible for the ps1...There are still games i play for ps1 ala Final Fantasy 7..mtv generator...cause sometimes u want to go back just like i still play duck hunt on nintendo..There is the dvd player and no u dont need a memory card if u have the newer version of the playstation.I have about 25 game saves on my memory card plus ps1 saves(yes u can save ps1 just not load them up ..u have to copy.)The playstation2 does have digital optical out..it supports progressive scan..there is not a feature that it really doesnt support..it plays allll cdr cdrw(xbox doesnt trust me i have one.i tried to ripp to the hard drive and no luv.)But its not without flaw i mean whats wrong with sony having such limited memory and the system only can draw one texture layer per pass ...shh xbox does 4 gamecube does 8.Basicaly what thats sayin is things like skin and grass all that looks like one thing(flat). But lets be real..Playstation2 does have the majority in game titles..thats without question...Grand turismo 3 and 4, grand theft 3 and vice city, devil may cry and in the near future some great titles..what does xbox has besides motogp2 and K O T O R im not bashing cuz i have all three but lets be serious playstation2 is still the most used gamesystem in my living room. I go to the videogame store and when i look for something to purchase of course PLAYSTATION222!! has the better variarty...With the upcoming ff11 the hardrive the xpandalbility will be sick...and i hope that those stop bashing the playstation2 and enjoy the ability that it has cuz the other game systems has its flaws also..(shh some games on the dreamcast looks as good as gamecube and xbox).Sound aboveGameplay aboveWould you like to Comment? Summary When I got the system i expected it to be amazing but it turined out to be horrible the loading time was so long I took naps the graphics weren't nearly as good as xbox and weren't as good as gamecubes.I hated the system so much after a month I gave to a friend.Sound The sound of the ps2 was was very bad I eventually had to buy huge speakers just to hear a game and even then it was bad. I think commadore 64 had a sound which was 10 times better than playstations. It's just very very sad I hated it.Gameplay The gameplay was bad very bad it made my hands ache after like 4 minutes and after like an hour I couldn't feel my hands in some games the gameplay was so bad that when I tried to move a character my hands ached so much that I would sometimes drop the controller. Overall ps2 has the worst gameplay of all system (even atari).Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary IF YOU'RE AN PS2 FAN DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW!This is the second best video game system out so far.Alot of so-so games are out for this system and the best one is grand theft auto vice city which makes the ps2 a big hit (really, one game makes it great!). Also what makes it second best to the xbox is the whole DVD thing. To play a DVD on xbox you need to buy the controller first because my friends have xbox and I know. But for ps2 you dont need to buy a DVD controller you use your ps2 controller to control the dvd movie and DVD options.Cool right? Not really, because you have to buy a memory card with a PS2 so the price equals out right? Wrong, with a PS2 you have to keep buying memory cards because they keep filling up! Plus Xbox doesn't even have a reset button.Thats pathetic. Instead they put 4 controller ports and a hard drive built in, much better! In my opinion I would get a ps2 instead of xbox because ps2 can play more than xbox like ps2 and ps1 (so it's like 2 video game systems in one system along with a dvd player and cd player into one system),xbox needs the dvd remote control,ps2 has more and better games out,and mostlty xbox's controllers are too BIG.It's like they're designed for adult hands or something. But I'm just a kid who can't handle BIG things in my hands. Perhaps if I really knew what I was talking about this review would make sense! Sound Sound depends on what game you're playing. But all games have great sound. Here is another aspect XBOX got it right, in game dobly digital 5.1 all the time. PS2 is dolby pro logic only, boooo. Gameplay XBOX games are the best because there are so many good games out there. PS2 is the only system that can play previous games from it's other system, but I traded my old PS1 games in because they were old and boring anyways. Oh yeah I forgot gamecube can play gameboy advance games. But to play GBA games on Gamecube you need to buy this special cartridge or something like that (duh!). You can't play it right away when you get the system so (would-would) have to wait till you get out and buy it.If playing playstation 2 games arent good enough for you then you can still play playstation 1 games on it too so and you wont miss a thing.Or play music on it or watch DVD's. The graphics are very good, not as good as the box but very close in almost all games. The games are also great with titles like SOCOM, GTA, Stuntman, and so many more.Sound Sound is great. It does exactly what games systems are supposed to do: to enable mutiple hours of fun for whoever is playing. It does this by providing a staggering number of games on the shelves, and by supplying the gamer with sufficiently updated graphics from the PS1. The system of course plays cds and dvds etc... which is always useful. But dont hype the dvd capability too much. The avid dvd watchers among us will agree that the picture quality does leave something to be desired, HOWEVER the system deals well with the picture and allows the added option of dvd watching. i doubt everyone listens to cds on the system as the process is a tad tiresome, and the sound quality from stand alone music systems is far better than the T.V's sound. But there is of course the option if you want it.It think that people sometimes try and make the system sound better by repeating that it can play cds and dvds AS WELL. Well have a think about what the games are stored on -- Cds and Dvds -- so big wow! So in summary the PS2 does mwhat it is supposed to. It plays games of a higher technical and graphical level than its predecessors and have the added capability of dvd and cd playback. I can some the system up in this following statement but be warned this statement will go down in history as being undeniably true: 'The PS2 is rough round the edges, but pretty awsome'. I like that. Sound Sound is pretty good of the PS2. Realistic crowd noises and engine rev noises. A gun sounds like a gun. Big Deal. This is true of most systems. The PS2 does not shine as the jewel in the PS2's crown, neither does graphics. Gameplay is what is important and the PS2 has stacks of this.Gameplay I played Metal Gear Solid 2 a couple of times while i had the system as well as Colin Mcrae Rally 3 and Madden 2003 and others. The gameplay is great. i had a really fun time. People often seem to expect too much from the system. they say that the gameplay is rubbish. i disagree. usually this is due to microsoft favouritism and the same applies from those sony-lovers who seem to claim wildely that the ps2 is by far the better and offer no explanation as to why. The gameplay is going to be very similar on all systems because, at the end of the day, they are all designed to play computer games. FULL STOP (PERIOD for you Americans). the gameplay does vary from game to game but the games i played all were of a high standard and were MOST IMPORTANTLY FUN. those whiney people who cry about the controller being uncomfortable i would like to tell them to grow up and to stop finding petit excuses to put down a perfectly good controller which has served the playstation from the dawn of the PSX's life.
