Summary

One of the best system since atari 2600 c-64 nes snes game gear genesis 32x n64 game boy pocket and color and psx. The graphics is truely amazing what they can do to make the characters look so realand the cars look so real. And the 24x speed max cd-rom is at its best and i like it when you can speed up the ps1 game and smooth out the polygon textures on the ps1 games. And unlike xbox from microsoft you cant play dvd out of its box without an attachment but with ps2 you can play dvd w/o an attachment. And the polygon teture is at a screaming rate of 70 million polygon textures per second ahile x box is only 20 million per seconds. That is why ps2 is better than xbox or the gcn. A 5/5 rateing if you ask me the ps2 rocks over some leading competitors. While some video game companys always tries to top over the sony ps2 and they cant and nintendo and microsoft just lower there prices and while the sony ps2 is still at 200 bucks. see nintendo just lower theirs gamecube to 129.99 while x box just lower theirs to 149.99 sp the ps2 is way better than xbox or the gcn. And you cant beat that price of the ps2 of 199.99 so live long the sony playstation 2 let the gaming battle beging...........hahahahahahahahahaha.....................So there is noway that gcn and xbox will top over the ps2 noway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The ps2 will beat gcn and xbox.............................Yessssssssssssssssssssssss the ps2 will live on and the ps2 is the number one system of all times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary

People who give this system (or a game, for that matter) a 1 and say things like "it suxx" are idiots. Why are you morons clogging these forums when people want to read thoughtful reviews and get a numerical score based on that? Go back to 3rd grade, diptwits.

There are certainly systems that deserve a 1 or a 2, but for real reasons. Like the Atari Jaguar. It had no games. Things like Sega Saturn would probably deserve a 3 for the same reason, decent hardware, no games.

But PS2 getting a 1? Don't be a retard. PS2 has one of the biggest game libraries ever, very good hardware, and good extra features. Personally, it gets a 5 from me because i've had the most fun with it out of any consoles I've owned - which are from the beginning: Atari 2600, Coleco (emulator) NES, SNES (emulator), Genesis (emulator), PSX, Dreamcast, PS2. This also includes an Apple 2 and a PC, for good measure.

I agree with the reviewers below who say that PS2 is durable, too. The only people I know who've had problems are people who mod-chip their consoles, or idiot 5-year olds who try to stick a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in the expansion slot. If you treat it right, it will last nearly forever (mine's been going nonstop since launch). Grow up, people!

Summary

Simply said, this system is very nice with very nice titles...I did enjoy this, until...it broke down, not once, not twice, but 3 times...What would happen? Well you put the game in, and the game comes out scratches, and ruined..OR The system simply does not play the game...You see, the system breaks down...and you think the "great guys" at Sony would gladly fix up the PS2...well think again...Sony would only look at it, to see whats wrong, if you paid them $60...add another $30-40 for repairs..and it costed around $100 to get this thing fixed..It comes back, good as gold..with a great 2 month warranty..ALright! Well..guess what happens next...2 months come and go..Within a week of the warranty expiring..it breaks again, simply would not play the games...End up sending it to Sony again, another $100 down the drain..Comes back, good as gold again, another 2 month warranty..comes and go...breaks down again!..This time, I said.."screw this, im getting me a Xbox"..Have had the box for over 6 months now, no problems..Love it, and trust me..the games are not that bad..In fact, there are some pretty good titles out there now (Halo, of course, Splinter Cell, Dead to Rights, Hitman 2, Ghost Recon, ect. ect.)...Although, yes, i do wish I could get Vice City..

Summary

The last two reviewers really hit the nail on the head. System specs besides, PS2 is just flat out the winner in terms of what system to buy today, if you can only get one. This is my advice for parents buying for kids, or latecomers to this gen of hardware.

X-box does indeed look like a system with attractive potential, and Gamecube has those juicy first party titles. But PS2 has a combination of factors that put it over the top. It plays DVD's out of the box; it has a huge selection of new, exclusive and discount games; and has many many more good third party titles both now and on the horizon.

The DVD is what really sells me. I've had 30 various PS2 games (currently 13, since I've sold some of them), and they're a lot of fun. But I've also used the PS2 as my primary DVD player. I paid $300 at launch for just this reason. Now that it's $200 with discount titles, it's an even better deal. It really is a complete 'entertainment' system.

My system has been very durable and reliable. I have experienced none of the problems anybody cites below, and like I said, mine's been in constant use since Oct. 2000. I think people who have problems mistreat their hardware. It's just like a stereo receiver, CD player or a computer - you have to be gentle with it!

I too am considering getting an X-Box in the future, but sorry Micro$oft, I'm waiting till it's $100. That will probably be next summer. The current bundle pack is very tempting, but not for $200. There just aren't enough great games in the pipe that can't also be had on PS2. If I suddenly get a well paying job, or happen across a bag of cash on the street, I'll get the X-Box bundle. But there's just no compelling reason to get it now. The same goes for the Cube - a few great first party titles, but not much else besides ports and shovelware.

As far as the future goes, I would guess PS2 has another two to three full years of top notch first and third party development for it. Then we'll be seeing PS3, which already has to be a favorite for the next generation, given PS2's performance in the market. I feel comfortable sinking some money into PS2 games, knowing that they;ll be compatible with the next system, as well. I really hope backward compatibility becomes the standard for every company - it really is a big selling point and confidence booster. (and there's really no reason not to have it, since all three consoles are now running on optical media and PC components)

Sound

Plays DVD's flawlessly. With a 5.1 channel setup and an optical cable, PS2 stands toe to toe with a dedicated DVD player.

What more can you say? If it plays DVD's well, certainly the games sound good, too.

Great system, good games, winner of the current generation, by far. History will look kindly on PS2, I think.

Gameplay

PS2 has a great mix of exclusives, (like Grand Theft Auto), strong first party software (like Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, Ico), and nearly total third party support (every sports game imaginable, tons of RPG's, the most Japanese software by far).

PS2 also has a growing library of $20 Greatest Hits titles, which include many of the above.

Having played video games since Atari 2600, I think I can say that PS2 can claim a good number of 'classics' in its library. This is something that Nintendo used to be able to wipe the floor with other consoles on, but not so much any more. It seems like Nintendo is reduced to their own first party stuff, basically one great title every six months or so. PS2 has Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry, Gran Turismo 3, Virtua Fighter 4, Final Fantasy X, Ico, SSX, Grand Theft Auto 3 and VC, Ace Combat 4, and more. (This is without considering sports games like Madden, Tony Hawk, etc.) Any of these games hold up with the 'greats' of Nintendo lore.

PS2 supports broadband and dialup online play. I think this is better than the X-Box aproach, which is broadband only. There are millions of families out there who don't have broadband access in their areas (I know the feeling, my apartment doesn't have it, either), and they're just screwed for X-Box online play as a result. and sorry M$, but people aren't going to be getting broadband in droves for another 3 or 4 years, at best. This is well past the current generation of systems. I also think that making the modem an optional purchase is better, too. It allows people who don't care about online play (like myself) to just forget about it.

The PS2 controller is also the best of the bunch, by far. Both the X-Box and GC d-pads are aparently desinged by mental patients. The mold of the dual shock fits any hand well, whether small or large. The analog sticks are a great feeling rubber, which is easy on the thumbs (unlike the dreamcast!). The rumble feature and anlog buttons are perfect, as well. It just doesn't get any better. If you're a sports gamer especially, but also an action, racing or fighting fan, the Dual Shock is just the perfect controller to have.

Summary

Bottom Line...this is one of the greatest systems of all time. I have owned (in order) the Atari 2600, Colecovision, the NES, the Sega Genesis, the Turbografix16, Sega CD, Super NES, Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, and now the Sony Playstation 2. I plan on buying an X-Box sometime next year because I think it is a more than worthy system and certainly the PS2's main competitor. But all you XBOX people who think that the XBOX will win the war between XBOX and PS2 (sorry GC fans) are dead wrong and here's why. The most intelligent way to determine which system has won is to compare worldwide sales, and the XBOX will never catch the PS2 on overall sales. It's as simple as that, and the PS2 has already won. This means more video gamers play the PS2 than the XBOX. The PS2 has such a lead that it cannot be caught, and Microsoft will be hard pressed to continually lose millions of dollars supporting their system (they do have to answer to their stockholders in these hard economic times). As far as the XBOX being better...well it does have more features, and like I said I will buy one sometime in the near future. But this is to be expected of a newer system and potential alone does not make a system better. Games make a system better and nobody can argue that PS2 doesn't have the better games. By the time XBOX is hitting it's stride PS3 will be coming out and that will end the XBOX's run.
Overall I didn't want to get into the politics of the situation but I feel compelled after reading all these ridiculous letters. Read my review of XBOX and you will find all 5's for it as well, as it is a great system too. Stop bashing the PS2! It is a great system and history will prove that point. In the end, the scoreboard will show at least 20 million more units sold than XBOX or Gamecube, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

Sound

Play a game like Medal of Honor or Ace Combat 4 and tell me that the sound sucks on PS2. Please. Again, judge a system within the context of when it was released, and what it has achieved...not by the new boy on the block. The sound is superb on PS2, and has been superb in video game systems since the use of the cd format. People who are looking for reasons to bash the PS2 usually end up on graphics and sound. Bottom line...newer systems have better graphics and sound. If that is the basis of your argument then I expect all of you to abandon the XBOX when something new comes along. Shame on you! Enjoy video games, and don't make it a personal thing. If you think I've made it personal realize this...I have already said I like the XBOX and that I will buy one. To me that is not someone who plays favorites. I simply cannot stand looking at some of the reviews on this website without throwing in my two cents. If you want to bash the PS2 look at the facts, and then realize that it has already proven itself WORLDWIDE as a spectacular system. Any true hardcore gamer who spends huge amounts of money on games should own this system. Just like they should own an XBOX. Don't bash this system...it will win the war overall. There is no argument there.

Gameplay

The gameplay on PS2 rocks! As far as the controller being "old", that just makes it more familiar for us hardcore gamers. I personally like the dualshock controller and have never felt that the controller has taken away from the gameplay experience. I cannot say the same thing for the other systems. Also...the games on PS2 play so well and flow so smooth, and that is what gaming is all about. Playing games like Tekken Tag or Gran Turismo 3 or GTA3 are what PS2 gaming is all about. Name one flight game on another "next generation" system that compares to Ace Combat 4. Can't do it can you? How about the sheer number of exclusive games on the PS2. This system is worth every penny I invested in it. Who wants to play a rehash of Metal Gear on another system after you've already spent hours playing it on the PS2. Same thing for Metal of Honor. Bottom line....Sony has it figured out, and PS2 still delivers quality games in the final years of it's run. Just take a look at current (nov 02) game sales in any magazine and you will realize that the PS2 is beotch slapping the XBOX and the GC in software sales. Will XBOX do that to PS3 after it has been out for a year? I don't think so.

Summary

I've read some pretty interesting reviews below. As for all the people who say their machines break down - what have you people been doing with them? Propping up the game couch leg with them? I've had mine since launch and haven't had even one problem. Sometimes I take it to a friend or relative's house, packing it up in its original box. Never had any issues. The only thing close to a technical issue is the 1 in 100 dvd's or so that has a minor playback glitch. But Xbox suffers from those problems, too.

Bottom line is you can't get as many good games for a good price as you can with PS2. Xbox has potential, although it seems like some Japanese companies are abandoning it. Nintendo will live or di the way it always has, by its own first party software. But PS2 has both unmatched 3rd party support and a great current library that is just now being discounted.

Sound

Equal to other consoles. With a DTS receiver, you can use PS2 as the center of a good 5.1 channel setup for DVD's. Attack of the Clones sounds great running on my PS2 with my Sony receiver. DVD visuals are as good as X-box, and on a normal TV, as good as any standalone DVD player. Maybe once I get some sort of widescreen HDTV, I'll notice a difference. But for what I'm using, PS2 is a good combo unit.

Gameplay

Here's what I'm talking about. I can list the games I really want to play on the other systems with one hand full of fingers. PS2, that question can only be answered by a conversation. Xbox has Halo, DOA3, Shenmue2... umm.... anybody help me out here? I'm drawing a blank. Gamecube has Metroid, maybe Mario (that franchise is getting a bit tired), Zelda (we're still waiting)... wait a minute... that sounds like exactly the same games they have on every system!

PS2: Grand Theft Auto 3 and VC, Devil May Cry 1 and 2, Virtua Fighter 4, Final Fantasy x, x-2, and soon 11 and 12, Ace Combat 4, Tekken 4, the best versions of Tony Hawk and SSX, Gran Turismo 3, Twisted Metal Black, Jak & Daxter, Ico, etc. etc. etc. There are just too many to list. I'd go over the limit trying.

May of these games are exclusive, a good number are being sold as greatest hits for $20!

PS2 just has so many more available games, and a lot of good ones on the horizon. Many more than XB or GC can claim to be looking forward to. Add to that the fact that Whenever PS3 is released, it will be backward compatible with PS2. So the real classics will always live on, and make that machine a great gaming investment just like PS2 had PS1 games.
