Summary

This all-round multimedia package will not disappoint you. The only major fault I found was the price, but you can't judge a machine by it's cost, only by how it performs. And it's performance is superb. Admittedly the DVD playback is not as good as a solo purpose DVD player, but it's way better than the VHS most people are used to. The same goes for music playback, although this largely depends of course on the system you hook ur PSX2 into.
The actual machine itself, as a physical entity, makes a very suitable addition to the "electrical furniture." And the black/blue colour scheme, while great, is bound to be changed into a myriad of coloured options, like the N64 and PSX before. It's just that kind of machine, the kind that will appear in public places a lot, in many different outfits.

Sound

As I said before, this largely depends upon the output system you have the PSX2 plugged into. For me there are no quarms regarding sound. Equally, I cannot say it's as good as my stereo, cos it only goes through my TV.

Gameplay

Primarily designed for games, but encompassing most of modern day multimedia, the PSX2 is an all round machine. This doesn't detract so heavily from it's gameplay as general reviews might have you think. After owning a Dreamcast since the day it came out, and playing about 70% of the games that have been produced for it, I can safely say the PSX2 is slightly ahead of the DC on most things. What seals it superiority games-wise is not the new titles tho, it's the vast array of old PSX titles, that can now be run in hi-res mode. This was a master-stroke by Sony, and one which could save them from the negative hype caused by over-hype in the first place!

Sound

There's not much to discuss about sound. In-game sound is fine; I can't tell if multiple sounds are mixed or not unless I'm playing, but I do think the quality itself is higher. The main benefit of the PS2 for sound is that Dolby Digital and DTS are possible, even if only in FMV and with an external decoder. But there's no complaints here; it'd just be nice if the sound was more comparable to a good PC card's.

Well, it is in a way: in the temple stage for Tekken, there's an audio reverb effect applied. I'd chalk that up more to the increased CPU strength, but nevertheless it sounds more like an SB Live - a good thing.

Gameplay

The launch titles for the North American PS2 seem to be much more consistently well-done than those of the Dreamcast and Japanese PS2 launches. The DC had a few very notable titles - but after those the quality seemed to drop off more noticeably. The Japanese PS2 launch didn't have much more going for it than Ridge Racer V and Kessen, which is just shameful (however good those two games might be, they're just two).

Compare that to the PS2 launch in the West: we've got SSX, Madden, Dynasty Warriors 2, DOA 2 Hardcore... there are few bombs, and even the games carried over from Japan tend to have tweaks. If Tekken had any problems, I can't see them!

You won't regret picking up a PS2 for the games at all, as far as I can tell.

Sound

the soung is like the sound of any old system... I have nothing against the sound so I'll give it a perfect score too!

Gameplay

the gameplay, many people in this website talk about the controller so i'll start on that. the controller looks beautiful, absolutely beautiful, it's a shiny black version of the original playstation controller. the analog stick is better than ever and it works very well, the buttons are soooo responsive! while playing Marvel vs. Capcom(original PSX game), I found out how much better and more sensitive the controller is than the second one. on the psx, when someone is shooting a fire ball at me and it's right in front of me,if i wasn't blocking already, it would hit me. but if this were to happen on the psx2, i would be able to block(it's that sensitive, the buttons will respond to your touch in a split second). greaaaaat!

Summary

Ah! The playstation 2 is here! Its sleek black covering makes it look like a low end VCR, but inside its bubbling with what Sony calls the "emotion" engine. In fact, its so powerful it can launch a rocket.(seriously!) Heck it can play crap-ass old plastation games, DVDS, and CDS right out the box. Unfortunately, it can't play "next generation" games. Who cares how many polygons a system can push? I care about games!Sony claimed that this was the console that was supposedly supposed to revolutionize not only gaming but the entire entertainment industry. Pretty strong words for a company whose only title at launch is fantavision- a lame firecracker game that could have been made on the atari coleco. And wait till you see "super" gameday! Trust me--you ain't seen nothin yet. Even though the launch games are all lacking without the back of 3rd party devolpment, SOny would have one big goose egg in Fantavision. Can you say lackluster? Right now I watching the MATRIX instead of playing DREAMCAST ONLINE! You know the funny thing is that I am a die hard sony supporter and right until launch I told my buddies that the playstation 2 will blow the dreamcast out of the water. I couldn't have been more wrong! The playstation 2 is monumental disappointment and fails miserably to live up to the hype. And the emotion engine sony promised--it works great! You should have seen the tears pouring down my face when I realized the best games on the playstation 2 are games that came out on the playstation one. While most of the games by NAMCO and ELECTRONIC ARTS(notice I didn't say sony and the other half-assed companies) offer nice clean graphics, the games all seem to be old games wrapped up in beutiful graphics and repackaged. MAdden plays exactly like madden on the playstation except now it's a great deal slower with a #@$%load of detail! There is no "NEW" gameplay! The sad thing that amidst all the hype we fail to realize one company is actually leading a revolution by taking gameplay to new heights. They never rely on other companies to make good games on their system. It's SEGA! Have you guys tried out Quake III arena? Man Sega really cares about FUN, QUALITY, AND US--THE GAMERS. TOO BAD WE DON't CARE!In a perfect world, sony should be looking over its shoulder not Sega. TRUST ME ONLINE GAMING IS THE FUTURE OF GAMING! Nothing on the playstation 2 looks better than the dreamcast and all of the launch games leave a sour taste in your mouth, even SSX with its horrendous slow-down. Don't even get me started on the slow-assed madden game! (puke) Some people say look at EA's madden and compare it to Visual Concepts Nfl 2k1 and you'll realize the raw power of the playstation 2. The sad reality is that we shouldn't even make these comparisons because the playstation 2 is ten times more powerful than the dreamcast. But you know what, the two games are comparable! How the hell did that happen? Simple-- whereas Sony concentrates on maintaining a monopoly on the enertainment industry Sega is hiring workers with sheer dedication to gaming and gamers. They actually care about you--not how fat your wallet is! Just look at Sega's triple AAA lineup Sonic Adventure, Virtua Tennis, SEGA RALLY, RESIDENT EVIL CODE:VERONICA, SOUL CALIBUR, CRAZY TAXI, ECCO, and VIRTUA FIGHTER. Most of these games are $20 and by SEGA. Betwen now and December they'll have: TONY HAWK2, QUAKE III ARENA, NFL 2k1, NBA 2k1, JET GRIND RADIO, METROPOLIS STREET RACER, UNREAL TOURNAMENT ONLINE!!!, SKIES OF ARCADIA, AND SHEN MUE. On playstion 2, you got 2 good games: SSX and MADDEN(though this is sort of a disappointment!) Now which would you choose: A system that's got the best fighting game in Soul calibur, best survival horror game in Resident Evil, one of the role-playing games in Skies of Arcadia, the best racing game in Metropolis Street Racer, the best sports games in NFL 2k1 and NBA and the best console FPS shooter in Quake III with on-line play , the most original games in Shen Mue and JEt GRind Radio, or a system that can play your best DVD. The playstation 2 may have 10X the power, but the dreamcast has 10X better games. Not buying a dreamcast is like commiting suicide. If SEGA can't survive by sheer quality of their games, then we should be ashamed as GAMERS. Don't settle for the hype! I'm gonna go out and buy a DREAMCAST, you should too! Hopefully I'll see you on-line and not just sitting at home watching your favorite DVD!

Summary

This system sucks! Loof at Ridge Racer V compare to Sega's GT. Look at Sega's online NFL2k1 compare to Sony's Madden. The Dreamcast has Bleem on the way and will play PS1 games making them 2 times better than what they look on the PS2.

The only good thing about the PS2 is the DVD player.I will buy a Dreamcast and watch movies on the PS2.The PS2 does not even have a modem like the Dremcast does.

EA will soon leave Sony for the XBOX and so will square which means no Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid for Sony. The PS2 memory card is very dissapointing compare to Sega's Visual Memory card. The VMU let's you play games and delete games with the little t.v. it has and also allows you to connect 2 VMU's and transfer files.PS2's memory card has nothing like this infact is the same as the PS1 memory card except it has more memory blocks.

Do not do the same mistake as i did, buy either XBOX when it comes out or a Sega Dreamcast, but save yourself those $300 and get a DC for only $150 and a VMU and a extra controller and a game or maybe even two games with what the hypestation costs at $300. Or you can get a DC for free if you sign up to Sega.net for internet gameplay.
Is a matter of fact i will get a refund and get all this for myself.

Sound

It got Dolby and dts (whatever that is), no other system do that. The old playstation sound was good, this is 1000 times better.

Gameplay

PS2=gameplay. With over 100 games to be released next year, total third party suport, and broadband gaming all on the horizon, the PS2 is a symbol of future. Unlike the powerless arcade game only dreamcast, the PS2 is capable of good graphics, sound, and can play DVD movies. And we know exactly what games are coming next year. For reamcast, can you name the games coming out next year on more than one hand? Course not. But what is important is the games. Unlike every other console in history, this launch doesn't suck. Me and my bros have had a great time playing games like Madden 2001. Phattest game ever. Weve also been enjoyin that new Tekken game. I couldnt get a memory card, and that sucks!! I told tha b**** in the store that they better get mo' cards in. SSX is fun but I hate snowboarding its just a fake sport for rich white boys. You want a system that has a future, loads a power, and tight games, get a PS2. If you want a poorly selling powerless system with stupid games, and none will come out after next january, get a dreamcast.

Summary

The playstation does not suck. But it's not going to give you virtual reality either. I work for Electronic arts and we got in 2 playstation 2's today. It can push more polys than the average computer, but you have to understand that a tv is like 60 year old technology, and it's never going to look as good as you want until HDTV is widespread. No anti-aliasing was a big mistake on Sony's part but the poly count, ablility to play old games and DVD player makes up for this. I think the price is too high right now and not enough games to say "YES! the PS2 is the best gaming system ever" but in a few months, the price will drop, metal gear solid 2 will come out along with a bunch of other killer games and the PS2 will dominate until the X-box kicks it's ass. Look at the first games for the PS1 compaired to later PS1 games, BIG DIFFERENCE! It's only been out for 1 day, don't knock it yet.

Sound

Also fantastic, sound is crisp and clear and voices are reprsented without any scratchy feedback. Easily the best sound on any system i have seen yet.

Gameplay

Gameplay on the unit is fantastic if you consider being able to play rehashed games with better graphic's great. If not you may want to wait to see what the next few months have to offer for the PS2 because i don't think the system will be able to survive with these types of games constantly coming out and offering nothing to the consumer in the way of innovation and creativity. While the games may look amazing(yes the graphics are the reason this system won't be tossed to the side) the lack of variety is obviously lost its way here on the systems launch at least because i see only a few select games keeping me playing. The experience is however immersive and does warrant the attention of many people who come looking for the next best thing. I also feel that with some of the new Dreamcast titles looming in the future that it will not be the only thing i will play and if sony was shooting for that effect, they missed by alot. DVD is a nice add-on and will what sells the system to a majority of the people i have spoken to but the games should be what sells this system not a feature that is there just because it's convienent. Overall i feel the PS2 has alot to prove to me before i will even admit that it was my money or the hype that is being tossed arund for it. I am sure with the new and innovative games coming out it will be an investment worth my time and if not, then it will meet the same trade-in demise as my other playstation did when it comes time to purchase gamecube or x-box.
