Summary Happy 10th birthday Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It looks like Nintendo redesigned the Super NES into a handheld and renamed it gameboy advance. I amazed after all these year the Super NES live on athough it getting smaller and smallerand pretty soon it will be gone for good. Me and my freinds nicknamed it "Super NES Pocket" becuase of game like Mario World and Zelda: Link to the past. "The 16 bitter still proves it still got some gusto. Sound It's look like they shrunk that SPC700 PCM Wavetable MIDI chip in the Super NES to fit in the Gameboy advance. The SPC700 "samples"intruments (MIDI), voices and Bleeps and bloops that sound better than than old NES/Gameboy. Athough it sounds distored through the little biult in speaker so headphone make it clear and you get pure bass. A few games "sample" bleep and bloop that sound NES/Gameboy qaulity but those are lazy game devolpers. This is an 8 bit sound system producing 16 bit MIDI sound overall. But at least they ditched the old 4 bit producing 8 bit bleeps and bloops. (Rectangle, triangle noise waves and low qaulity DPCM) Gameplay It's like a Super N controller with a screen in the middle but they ran out of room for X and Y buttons but still has L and R.Would you like to Comment? Summary The Game Boy Advance isa graet idea idea by Nintendo. This is the first Game Boy unit i have owned so I can't say about the earlier units other than than this is the best handheld game so far. It has good graphics & the games aren't so expensive either. It really comes in handy because you can take it with you anywhere & never get bored. Not Playstation-quality graphics but very impressive.Sound OK, but could be louder. It depends of course on the game itself. Some games have louder sound than others.Gameplay Cannot comment on this since it varies on the type of game you play on the unit.Would you like to Comment? Summary Do you remember 16-bit? I'm sure some of you do. Before the PS2/Gamecube/X-box, and before the PS2/Saturn/N64, there was the original system war: SNES vs. Sega Genesis. Some may argue that long before this the Master System and the NES qualified as a System War, but unfortunately, Sega did not have anything more than a cult following at that time. No, 16-bit was when the first true system war was raging. While both systems were fantastic, and both sides had their hardcore fans, most will agree that in the end, the SNES undoubtedly won. To this day, many argue that the SNES is still the greatest console of all time. Now, the GBA has been released, and many are touting it as a handheld SNES. Sure it has less buttons than the SNES controller, but basically it matches up. So is the GBA a handheld version of "the greatest system of all time"? The answer, is no. The Gameboy Advance is much, much more. Graphically, it compares right nicely with its 16-bit cousin. Everything animates about as well, and even on such a small screen, it works better than you'd likely ever imagine in the graphics department. But graphics weren't the reason the SNES had so many fans. The SNES had fans because it had a huge selection of games. There were a few mediocre, and some downright bad games in there, but for there were also lots of fantastic games too. There were RPG's, there were platformers, there were shooters, there were adventure games... Literally something for everyone on that golden little system. The real question is: Will the GBA be getting this kind of game selection? The big thing that pushed Nintendo to push out such great games was the fact that Sega's Genesis was proving to be some stern competition. Genesis had great games of its own, covering just as many genres, and to maintain its fanbase Nintendo was forced to innovate, and was forced to create the greatest games they could. Without the competition in the handheld department, can we really expect great things from the GBA? You bet. Nintendo may not have any handheld competition, but they do on the console front, with their Gamecube system currently locked in competition with Sony's PS2, and Microsoft's X-box. To bring in as much money as possible, they've got to win gamers on the handheld front as well, and they're doing just that by bringing back some of their classics, such as Metroid, Mario Kart, and Zelda. On top of that, they're getting new Castlevania games which hope to expand upon the gameplay presented in the PS1's Symphony of the Night. But that isn't all folks. Now that Sega is out of the console wars, where are their games going? The answer is that they're producing games for all of the systems, including the GBA. We're getting some classic Sega games here as well, including Revenge of Shinobi, Sonic, and others. Those who call the Gameboy Advance a handheld SNES, as big of a compliment as that is, aren't doing it justice. This is a handheld version of the first, and greatest system war. This is the SNES, the Genesis, and everything that those two systems and their competition embodied. The GBA is quickly turning into a classic gamer's paradise. Get one. You will not regret it. Sound This is probably the GBA's only real downfall. The handheld can't possibly recreate the sound of the 16-bit consoles from just one tiny speaker, especially when it is so badly placed that the lower part of my thumb often covers it. Still though, the sound isn't terrible, and nobody should play a game for its sound anyway.Gameplay This should be judged on the individual games, but considering the selection of games that are coming to the system, you can expect superb gameplay to be the norm.Would you like to Comment? Summary Now about £60 is a handheld console that has thousands of colours and much better graphics. This is the Gameboy Advance. The best handheld out! If you still got the out of fashion Gamboy color then leave it on your bed and go out a buy the advance as it is alot more powerful and has more games! Rating: %98Sound The sound hasn't improved from the other gameboys. Like i said before it is the games that makes the sound. Agh. You can in fact make the volume louder than before!Gameplay All the games have use of the new feature, the R and L shoulder pads! You will use them alot in the new games. Unfortunately it hasn't yet come to the X ad Y buttons. But that doesn't matter right now. Let's look into the graphics.Would you like to Comment? Summary It looks like nintendo did it again. First theyreborn the NES as gameboy color and now the Super NES is reborn as Gameboy advance. (EVERYBODY THE SUPER NES IS BACK AND SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT IN YOUR POCKET!!!!) It is 32-bit but don't leap for joy becuase it won't give 3D like playstation. It has a crappy 32-bit processor which only is capable puting out 16-bit graphics like Super NES. CPU: 32-bit ARM(RISC) Multiple backgrounds,2X mode7 ,Super FX polygonal grphics (Not playstation qaulity) Sound: 2 Direct sound PCM digital generaters multiple channels plus the old FM PSG sound. I betcha in a few years from now they will make a gameboy capilble of playing N64 games. Sound It is a major upgrade than the old gameboy. It is digital almost CD-qaulity just like super NES.The Super NES had an Sony SPC700 PCM proccessor but gameboy advance has a different but simuler PCM proccesser. This means you'll get instrumental like sound and clear voices. Some lazy game producers still use the old gameboy beepy sound system. It can't produce cd qaulity surround sound but its almost there. Gameplay It has the Left and right buttons like SuperNES but lacks X and Y. Games control better with the two new buttons Would you like to Comment? Summary It retails about $70 right now. Pretty good price, but still a little high, considering you can buy a PS1 for only $50.The games are definetly too expensive. $20 is the cheapest. Most sell for $30. Sound The sound is great. It features one small, but loud speaker.Gameplay One of the main faults of the unit is its lack of ergonomic design. I find my fingers getting cramped up after a short time playing the unit. It can be related to the original NES controllers- flat, square. This is probably the biggest fault of this unit.Features a D-pad, A and B buttons on the right side, and L and R buttons on the top. The unit itself is really small. It can fit in probably any pocket. Very handy for taking along any kind of trip. Also, the cartriges are about half the size of original GB cartriges. Thus, you can bring along a lot of them. About 15 hours of gameplay with two AA batteries. Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. I though it would another system with flat, 2-D graphics. After playing it, if you asked me if that was the case I would say, Hell no. The graphics are tremendous, the new buttons are excellent and overall it is a great system. Five stars!Sound The sound ain't much better than the GBC. However most games have superior sound than previous games, which gives it a better overall sound. All in all the sound isn't that much improved.Gameplay There are two new buttons, the R button and the L button. Both are utilized in most games ad are very helpful. It can get a bit complicated with the start and select buttons placed differently, but you get used to it.Would you like to Comment? Summary I bought this thing when it first came out. I was stoked about the 32-bit ARM CPU, the same type they used in the high-end PDAs of the day. Upon attepting to play it, however... I realized it didn't work. The games played, but the squinting hurt my eyes, and tilting it to keeping the glare off hurt my hands. I would have given it an awful rating a year ago, however I installed an AFTERBURNER backlight kit. I botched the installation, so there are glare lines where the kit was forced it and visible dust particles... but now I can USE it... imagine that. I also snapped on a faceplate with bigger buttons and a joystick. It is truly a joy to play now, and has eliminated every instance of public boredom... I even play it when I'm stuck in traffic. All scores given is for the MODDED version - anyone buying one should go to ebay and find one with a backlight. Otherwise don't bother.Sound Little tiny speaker. Not much else to say, although I have heard some good voice samples in some games, as an example - Doom came complete with all of the music and sound effects it had on the PC.Gameplay Even though the GBA is capable of 3D graphics, most games are still mostly if not totally 2D. I have playing the hell out of Advance Wars, I dare say the most engrossing turn-based strategy game I've ever played. I also enjoy the near PC-perfect doom and 'Ecks vs Sever'. Less than year out the GBA has an impressive library of great games, and its backwards compatible with GB and GBColor.. there really is no comparison with any other portable.Would you like to Comment? Summary All that I can say is that this has to be the best handheld system EVER! The first time I picked it up was when I was playing a frinds GBA and I was instantly jealus. I was playing Tony Hawk 2 on it and that was simply amazing! All that I had at the time was a GBC so I instantly sold that and brought a GBA. If you do not have one as yet...GO BUY ONE!!!Sound The sound blew me away the first time I switched it on! The sound quality is great and thrashes any other handheld system avalible! On games like Mario Kart Super Circut the sound is wonderfull and this is why I intend to buy this game. I love my gameboy and it stays safe in my room away from dangers like my elder brother who is eager to play it.Gameplay The gameplay on the system is great and with a stack of games already out and more to come it beats X-Box or Playstation 2 any day. The button placement on the little thing is great and very easy for small kid's. Even my dad can play it with his fat stubby fingers! The L and the R buttons are a great addition to the system and improves games by 100%! I 'am so glad that I own one and I feel sorry for anyone who does not.Would you like to Comment? Summary If you're wondering why my GameBoy Advance was only $60 instead of the usual $70, it's because I bought a used unit. This is definitely a worthwhile purchase. The game selection is great with the current catalog chock full of "must have!" titles, and the unit itself is solidly constructed and intelligently designed. It fits in your hand like a console game controller and all the buttons are execellently placed so that your fingers naturally find them. However, the GBA does have a serious flaw: the screen is rather dark. I'm at a loss to explain why Nintendo chose to not include some kind of manual contrast control or, better yet, an honest to goodness backlight, but as it is, you need fairly strong light to really be able to appreciate the high-resolution color LCD screen. While there are many after-market lights on store shelves, most of them fall into the "junk" category, with a few rising to merely adequate. While the Afterburner internal backlight kit offers the best performance, it is also the most expensive to purchase and the most difficult to install. The dark screen isn't a product killer, but it is frustrating. I gave the GBA an overall score of 5 because it is still an excellent portable gaming system despite the disappointing display.Sound The sound is a bit thin due to the tiny speaker, but it is clean for the most part. Some games will ocassionally drive it too hard causing minor distortion. The sound capabilities are also more than bleeps and blips with some games offering digitized voices. All in all, despite the anemic sound output, the sound quality is good.Gameplay The current game selection is excellent, and many of the ported titles play exactly like their big brother counterparts.Would you like to Comment? It is perfect to occupy yourself while on roadtrips, in a waiting room, or just at home. There are many exciting games that have already been produced for this system, creating even more incentives to buying it. The Gameboy Advance is well worth the investment.Sound The sound is pretty good. The only limits it has is it could be just a little louder. As far as the quality of the sound, it is almost as if I'm playing my N64. The sound quality is excellent.Gameplay There are many fun and exciting games that will entrance one for hours at a time. There's so many games you can play and since you can play GBC&GB games its even better. I like the way it fits just right. With a wider screen I can see better. What else is cool about it is I can use it on my friends Game Cube as an additional screen and controler. I recomend this to every one who wants a Gameboy with awsome graphics.Sound Sound is good it can get loud. For example Golden Sun has great music. I love sound effects for the moves you get on golden sun like Meteor. I have a couple more games like Spider-Man wich also has great sound.Gameplay Gamplay differs from what types of games you have. The controls are good and there simple just like a regular GBC or GB. It has the basic a and b buttons. Start and select with two additional buttons that are the L and R buttons. You should always read the instruction book for your game because the controls are different for each game.Would you like to Comment? Summary ~==THE LOOK==~The Game Boy Advance no longer uses the original style of the black and white and/or the color Game Boy. It has become more like Sega Game Gear or the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Nintendo is also constantly releasing new colors too. ~==THE FEEL==~ It's pretty small, but most gamers can get used to that. ~==THE HARDWARE==~ The technogial achievements for the new Game Boy are many. Graphics are an obvious one, most of the visual presentation on game are about the equivelent to the Super Nintendo. The only problem is you can't play in the dark, because it's not backlit. If play it under a bright houselight, it will cause screen glare. But, I hear a new accesorie for the Game Boy Advance is a little something called an "Afterburner" lighting kit. All I can say about the sound is, it rocks. It can even play voiceovers! Although it still seems that the music is pure MIDI ~==THE VERDICT==~ Good Sound see abiveGameplay see aboveWould you like to Comment? Summary Well...with all due respect, we need to take a really good look at the gameboy advance. i have to give the trophy to nintendo here, guys. just the thought of a 32-BIT handheld...think about it...32...bit...hand...held...thats pretty freakin awsome guys! the GBA fits perfectly in your hands, and it fits easily into your pocket for traveling. nintendo has never EVER let us down on systems, or handhelds. they just keep coming up with amazing stuff that you just wanna purchase all the time. personally, i favor the ps2 big time. but seriously, theres a big appreciation that has to be said, and made. nintendo's in the lead in the competition, and i highly respect them for making one of the best handhelds in the world! keep up the good work nintendo.Sound the sound could be better, yet it is WAY improved since the GBC. sound isnt the greatest features in the GBA, but for a handheld, its the best improved sound coming out of one.Gameplay the gameplay for the GBA is really good. and i mean REALLY good. there is a lot of good titles out there, and unlike other handheld games, the GBA games will keep you playing them for hours and hours. RPG's on this handheld will defintely have its advantages! gameplay is way to good for just a handheld! :)Would you like to Comment? Summary The Gameboy Advance is an excellent handheld. It's a small handheld, so bigger hands might have a harder time playing, youmight get cramps, but that hasn't been really a problem for me. 2 of my other friends has a GBA too, I'm really Impressed with it, with good games, quality Nintendo games, High-tech & Flashy Graphics (It's the little Engine that could; the "Lil Powerhouse") I recieved this game last Christmas, with Mario Kart & Super Mario Advance. I also got Harvest Moon 3 (for GBC) & The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC) I can play them on my GBA too; Since It's backwards capability. I also own Baseball Advance & Puyo Pop. All are Excellent games,a nd I plan to continue my growing library with the GBA's excellent games. There is many more I want to get (Medal of Honor: Underground, Tactics Ogre, Golden Sun, Wario Land 4, etc;) Sound The sound on most games are excellent, what the GBA can do in sound is really good, with only one speaker. It does sound a little tin though with speakers on though, but a little better with them on, becasue you can hear it all full force with them on. Although, some of the sounds can get a little repetitive because It's small and some of the sounds seem from yesteryear. But, It is Excellent, such as in Mario Kart, It's Excellent, good as it can get, most of the sounds & music from the tracks are great, where you might just end up humming along with them. All in All, the GBA has very good sound. No real flaw, because sound doesn't really make the gameplay, it just helps it along quite well. =) Very Smooth! =) Gameplay Gameplay is like having a SNES in the palm of your hand, excellent gameplay. The Buttons layout is good, and it's good that there is two shoulder buttons added. There is a D-pad, two (a-b) buttons, two shoulder buttons, & the start & select buttons. There is 6 buttons total, and the D-pad. The D-pad is small, but very functional, someone with big thumbs though, could probably cover the entire D-pad. It's easy to use though, not TOO small, and it doesn't destract really at all. The Shoulder buttons are good for added gameplay features for the next-gen GBA, but they aren't very "clicky" It seems like thay don't go down much, not giving you that "clicky" connect feeling. Still, they are of good use. The other to primary (a-b) buttons are nothing new at all, but are still great. Though while playing a game like Mario Kart on the GBA, It's sort of hard to accelerate & then angle your hand to push on the Shoudler buttons, making it a tad uncomfortable, nothing majore at all though, I am just nit-pciking in the slightest, the GBA is a little small, but very functional, and doesn't really have any real *major* flaws.Very Smooth. =) Would you like to Comment? It's design is very ergonomic - it's comfortable to hold and play, it feels natural. The screen is larger than the previous gameboy's, which is great. The whole gameboy is also much thinner and easier to hold. The addition of the shoulder 'L' and 'R' buttons allows for more varied gameplay and entertainment. The contrast/brightness is set in stone, it can't be adjusted (which is a good thing in my opinion) as with Nintendo's previous gameboy's.If you liked the Super Nintendo, and you like RPG's and old school games, then ABSOLUTELY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET A GAMEBOY ADVANCE, YOU WILL LOVE IT. Sound The sound is great, but it has it's limitations. It certainly doesn't match the quality of the consoles.Gameplay There are already some great RPG's available on this system, "Golden Sun" and "Breath of Fire" just to name a few. You'll visit towns and have interactive conversations with people, manage your spells and summons in your select subscreens, conquer dungeons and fight monsters, and explore all sorts of lands, all the things you love in an RPG.There are so many re-makes of old classics from the Nes and Super Nes available for this system.
