Summary

Do you remember 16-bit? I'm sure some of you do. Before the PS2/Gamecube/X-box, and before the PS2/Saturn/N64, there was the original system war: SNES vs. Sega Genesis. Some may argue that long before this the Master System and the NES qualified as a System War, but unfortunately, Sega did not have anything more than a cult following at that time. No, 16-bit was when the first true system war was raging. While both systems were fantastic, and both sides had their hardcore fans, most will agree that in the end, the SNES undoubtedly won. To this day, many argue that the SNES is still the greatest console of all time.

Now, the GBA has been released, and many are touting it as a handheld SNES. Sure it has less buttons than the SNES controller, but basically it matches up. So is the GBA a handheld version of "the greatest system of all time"? The answer, is no. The Gameboy Advance is much, much more.

Graphically, it compares right nicely with its 16-bit cousin. Everything animates about as well, and even on such a small screen, it works better than you'd likely ever imagine in the graphics department. But graphics weren't the reason the SNES had so many fans.

The SNES had fans because it had a huge selection of games. There were a few mediocre, and some downright bad games in there, but for there were also lots of fantastic games too. There were RPG's, there were platformers, there were shooters, there were adventure games... Literally something for everyone on that golden little system.

The real question is: Will the GBA be getting this kind of game selection? The big thing that pushed Nintendo to push out such great games was the fact that Sega's Genesis was proving to be some stern competition. Genesis had great games of its own, covering just as many genres, and to maintain its fanbase Nintendo was forced to innovate, and was forced to create the greatest games they could. Without the competition in the handheld department, can we really expect great things from the GBA?

You bet. Nintendo may not have any handheld competition, but they do on the console front, with their Gamecube system currently locked in competition with Sony's PS2, and Microsoft's X-box. To bring in as much money as possible, they've got to win gamers on the handheld front as well, and they're doing just that by bringing back some of their classics, such as Metroid, Mario Kart, and Zelda. On top of that, they're getting new Castlevania games which hope to expand upon the gameplay presented in the PS1's Symphony of the Night.

But that isn't all folks. Now that Sega is out of the console wars, where are their games going? The answer is that they're producing games for all of the systems, including the GBA. We're getting some classic Sega games here as well, including Revenge of Shinobi, Sonic, and others.

Those who call the Gameboy Advance a handheld SNES, as big of a compliment as that is, aren't doing it justice. This is a handheld version of the first, and greatest system war. This is the SNES, the Genesis, and everything that those two systems and their competition embodied. The GBA is quickly turning into a classic gamer's paradise. Get one. You will not regret it.

Summary

I bought this thing when it first came out. I was stoked about the 32-bit ARM CPU, the same type they used in the high-end PDAs of the day. Upon attepting to play it, however... I realized it didn't work. The games played, but the squinting hurt my eyes, and tilting it to keeping the glare off hurt my hands. I would have given it an awful rating a year ago, however I installed an AFTERBURNER backlight kit. I botched the installation, so there are glare lines where the kit was forced it and visible dust particles... but now I can USE it... imagine that. I also snapped on a faceplate with bigger buttons and a joystick. It is truly a joy to play now, and has eliminated every instance of public boredom... I even play it when I'm stuck in traffic. All scores given is for the MODDED version - anyone buying one should go to ebay and find one with a backlight. Otherwise don't bother.

Summary

If you're wondering why my GameBoy Advance was only $60 instead of the usual $70, it's because I bought a used unit. This is definitely a worthwhile purchase. The game selection is great with the current catalog chock full of "must have!" titles, and the unit itself is solidly constructed and intelligently designed. It fits in your hand like a console game controller and all the buttons are execellently placed so that your fingers naturally find them. However, the GBA does have a serious flaw: the screen is rather dark. I'm at a loss to explain why Nintendo chose to not include some kind of manual contrast control or, better yet, an honest to goodness backlight, but as it is, you need fairly strong light to really be able to appreciate the high-resolution color LCD screen. While there are many after-market lights on store shelves, most of them fall into the "junk" category, with a few rising to merely adequate. While the Afterburner internal backlight kit offers the best performance, it is also the most expensive to purchase and the most difficult to install. The dark screen isn't a product killer, but it is frustrating. I gave the GBA an overall score of 5 because it is still an excellent portable gaming system despite the disappointing display.

Sound

Yes, even the sound for gameboyadvanced is very good! games like Tony Hawk 2/3 and Golden Sun have music that never gets tiring, even for a game boy music. sound effects are clear and music is great, even some games have speech, wich is crystal clear through that quarter sized speaker. but even for a quarter size speaker, at full blast everyone in the house will hear what youre playing! mostly sound depends on the game, but the possibilities are extremely large

Gameplay

game play really depends on the game youre playing, but the controls are simple , and with the new shoulder L and R buttons, games become more indepth and controlled. the GBA is backwords compattable so will play all of your old games! so even if you cant buy the new games now, get a GBA cuase its worth the cash. plus with those of you getting a gamecube, it will act as an extra controller/screen/who knows, its possibly endless. the buttons are easy to hit, and the new shape and size is very confortable all people

Summary

~==THE LOOK==~
The Game Boy Advance no longer uses the original style of the black and white and/or the color Game Boy. It has become more like Sega Game Gear or the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Nintendo is also constantly releasing new colors too.
~==THE FEEL==~
It's pretty small, but most gamers can get used to that.
~==THE HARDWARE==~
The technogial achievements for the new Game Boy are many. Graphics are an obvious one, most of the visual presentation on game are about the equivelent to the Super Nintendo. The only problem is you can't play in the dark, because it's not backlit. If play it under a bright houselight, it will cause screen glare. But, I hear a new accesorie for the Game Boy Advance is a little something called an "Afterburner" lighting kit. All I can say about the sound is, it rocks. It can even play voiceovers! Although it still seems that the music is pure MIDI
~==THE VERDICT==~
Good

Summary

The Gameboy Advance is an excellent handheld.
It's a small handheld, so bigger hands might have a harder time playing, youmight get cramps, but that hasn't been really a problem for me. 2 of my other friends has a GBA too, I'm really Impressed with it, with good games, quality Nintendo games, High-tech & Flashy Graphics (It's the little Engine that could; the "Lil Powerhouse") I recieved this game last Christmas, with Mario Kart & Super Mario Advance. I also got Harvest Moon 3 (for GBC) & The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC) I can play them on my GBA too; Since It's backwards capability. I also own Baseball Advance & Puyo Pop. All are Excellent games,a nd I plan to continue my growing library with the GBA's excellent games. There is many more I want to get (Medal of Honor: Underground, Tactics Ogre, Golden Sun, Wario Land 4, etc;)

Sound

The sound on most games are excellent, what the GBA can do in sound is really good, with only one speaker. It does sound a little tin though with speakers on though, but a little better with them on, becasue you can hear it all full force with them on. Although, some of the sounds can get a little repetitive because It's small and some of the sounds seem from yesteryear. But, It is Excellent, such as in Mario Kart, It's Excellent, good as it can get, most of the sounds & music from the tracks are great, where you might just end up humming along with them.

All in All, the GBA has very good sound. No real flaw, because sound doesn't really make the gameplay, it just helps it along quite well. =)

Very Smooth! =)

Gameplay

Gameplay is like having a SNES in the palm of your hand, excellent gameplay. The Buttons layout is good, and it's good that there is two shoulder buttons added. There is a D-pad, two (a-b) buttons, two shoulder buttons, & the start & select buttons. There is 6 buttons total, and the D-pad. The D-pad is small, but very functional, someone with big thumbs though, could probably cover the entire D-pad. It's easy to use though, not TOO small, and it doesn't destract really at all. The Shoulder buttons are good for added gameplay features for the next-gen GBA, but they aren't very "clicky" It seems like thay don't go down much, not giving you that "clicky" connect feeling. Still, they are of good use. The other to primary (a-b) buttons are nothing new at all, but are still great. Though while playing a game like Mario Kart on the GBA, It's sort of hard to accelerate & then angle your hand to push on the Shoudler buttons, making it a tad uncomfortable, nothing majore at all though, I am just nit-pciking in the slightest, the GBA is a little small, but very functional, and doesn't really have any real *major* flaws.

Very Smooth. =)
