Sound

The sound.... whoa. First off the announcers..It's so nice not being limited to "Boom" or "He'll feel that one in the morning". The decision to use actors was great. The same crew is back and hauntingly cover plays in detail.
You won't here repetitive banter over and over like Madden :-) Also there are NO glitches. Perfect synhronization in every way. THIS IS THE PERFECT FOOTBALL GAME.

Gameplay

The running game is THE BEST ever. I have been an EA sports fan my whole life but VC has the honors of best football game for this year definitely. I have Madden on PSX and even PC and both suck. Completely! Very disappointed. In every way NFL 2K1 outshines them. How they did the internet is brilliant. You can really specify location, you can choose what region (east- west- mid west). You then choose north or south.

So I chose South Eastern, and immediately found a game and it connected faster than my cable modem on Half Life Counter Strike! No kidding!! There is no freaking lag. Heck I played a guy in California and there was still no lag. They must have some voodoo magic or something. I don't know how they did it.

One other thing that's awesome, after plays you can push guys down and get penalties, heh heh.

And now AI with brains, linesman actually block for you. Yay!

Sound

I love when players talk sh_t and they talk a lot of it on this bad boy. I like the new player specific comments. I missed that from Madden. Last year, I could tell it was random. Color commentary is still the best in the biz. Get this game now! I need more people to beat, and now I don't even have to waste my gas money to do it! P.S. If someone from Visual Concepts reads this, please do NHL2K1, MLB2K2, Virtua Tennis 2, Golf2K1, and whatever else you want, cuz WE WILL BUY IT!!!

Gameplay

I can run! I can actually run! It has franchise mode! Although not quite as deep as Madden's, but remember Madden had a 3 year headstart and it's first franchise mode was not this good! Online play is sweet, although I'm hooked on my 128 bit franchise wet dream. Madden 2001 on PS2 will not be better simply because of lack of net play. If you are looking for a good game, challenge "vv420vv" (dat's me!). C'mon people, Dreamcast is $150 bucks and you get that back in 4-6 weeks. PS2 is $300. Take your rebate and buy a damn DVD player if that's what your gonna say. C'mon by the time PS2's online is ready it'll be too far behind to catch up to what we already have TODAY!!! This is a no brainer. Skip PS2, Game Cube, and wait for XBox for the next next-gen console.

Sound

Again, as with NFL2K, the sounds are perfect. With the added tweaks of turning up the player taunts and stadium music, Im gonna be bumpin this CD down the strip this weekend for all the fly honeys!

Gameplay

Running game is now offically 'good'. Huge gaps open up like the red sea parting. Passing game is improved in the sense that ive been making tricky plays that I wouldnt have pulled off in NFL2K (very hard). QB is sluggish, but you can give him speed bursts/leap/juke...all the moves a RB has so this offsets it, and actually makes more sense realistically.

I am actually very disapointed though in the tackling department. In NFL2K the hits were hard, earth shattering pops! In NFL2K1, the tacklers simply 'drape' themselves onto the ball carrier. Ive tested different tackle angles, distances from the tackles, and all with the same result. Another thing is the defensive linemen...hard as heck to get to the QB unless your coming far off the outside...and AGAIN, no power-hits...4 different attacks but no 'knock-em-off-theyre-feet-elbow attack'. Unfortuantely, the hitting was one of the cornerstones that made NFL2K a hit in my book, and im starting to think maybe ill play that until they get it right with NFL2K2, or perhaps ill get Madden 2001. Sound

The sound is perfect but it makes its little mistakes. But when you play a season and you are the visiting team and you are losing ah man it really gets loud. It sounds like the real thing. Snap counts are very long it also draws the team offsides. If you play this game hook it up to your stereo speakers and listen to how loud and realistic it gets. Players talk trash on third downs like they are anticipating on what you are going to do like they just selected the play for you. The crowd noise get so loud if I'm not at home that I can't even hear my snap count. The little mistakes that the game makes is miss judging what just happens, and the center snaps the ball when you didn't say hut. It could also miss count the snap count but, this stuff happens in every game even in Madden. Not every game is perfect and people really piss me off when they diss Sega about a game that is not totally perfect. But anyway the sound is still good.

Gameplay

The gameplay is extremely better than last year. The offensive linemen actually blocks so it makes it easier for your running game to develop without doing it on your own. The defensive linemen acctually have to work just to make a tackle or a sack. Better tackling is in the game, but they still have one of the most electrifying moves in sports entertaiment, "The Rock Bottom",. The defensive backs play extremely too damn well. If you play this game do not let their coverages fool you because they will pretend that you have them burnt then once you throw it that way they will either pick you off,tip the ball in the air for some else, knock it down, or knock you down once you lay a finger on the ball. Oh yeah the game plays the same way your team plays in the NFL so if your WRs & QB does not have a good chemistry then the defense will stop you almost every single time on third downs. Lets just put this way this game is more realistic to the NFL than the NFL.

Sound

They best thing I love about this game is all the trash talking the defense does (SEGA hit it big in this area). I mean when it's third and two the deffense lets you know that they're about to "bring on the pain." YEEAAHH! The Commentators are hilarious, you better believe they gonna talk as much trash as the defense does if you screw up! A+

Gameplay

The gameplay is top-notch. There is much improvement from last years running game, passing game, and overall defense. Remember (NFL2k) how Emmit Smith would get tackled about two seconds after he got tha rock? Not anymore! The speed burst and juke moves will leave any defender wishing why he didn't just stay at McDonalds flipping burgers for $6.15 an hour (no offense to those who do that for a proffession). Another improvement that I personally love is how on defense I can actually intercept the ball when the QB makes a cheesey throw (last year the QB would throw the ball and it would hit you dead square in the numbers and nothing would happen good job SEGA). Overall, the gameplay is "supatight". A+

Summary

This is the greatest fooball game ever created and easily the one the best games ever created. It had surprised me so much how this game has improved, the running was totally revamped, the passing is better the ball gets there pretty fast on a bullet and the lob cant be stopped. I played about 5 games straight yesterday and after every game i wanted more until i realized i had homework to do. The online portion of this game is really unmatched. I like to have my roster up to date so there is no more going through every team and taking out the people who are not supposed to be on a team all i have to is download the rosters off of the internet and it takes about what a couple of minutes instead of hours. The animations are great after every play you see guys pushing and shoving and talking trash like in real life. The throw back uniforms is a great touch this the first time i have ever seen this on football game superb! If you look hard enough you can see when a player scores it looks just like the person does in real life under the face mask. The bump and run coverage is also fantastic i could go on all day about how great this game so go out and by it for yourself and see you won't be dissapointed.

Summary

With the huge success of NFL2K last year, Dreamcasts not only flew off of shelves, but gamers were taken to another level of video game football, with smooth and detailed graphics, great sound, and excellent gameplay. NFL2K was not without its flaws, however, as the sub-standard running game was a target for many critics, as well as some minor slowdown and a few other minor glitches. When the inevitable sequel was announced, fans were quickly excited, but the best news was that the addition of online gaming was to become a reality. Gamers from all over the country would be able to play against each other in real time, and SegaNet, Sega's latency-retardant ISP, would be the backbone of the online experience.

NFL2K1 is finally available, SegaNet is operational, and I'm happy to report that online play does indeed work. For at least the next 6 weeks, this game will be the talk of the sports gaming community and newsgroups and message boards will teem with activity about online challenges, among other things. While NFL2K1 is quite impressive, it's still not perfect. Some speech bugs and another large disparity in difficulty keep this game from reaching a perfect score; however, it's easily the best sports game available for the Dreamcast console right now and is more than deserving of a purchase due to its tight gameplay and enormous replay value when you factor in online gameplay. Let's take a closer look at what could be Sega's biggest game of the year...

Sound

The sound in NFL2K1 is also improved from its predecessor, with new play-by-play and color commentary as well as more interaction by the PA announcer and a lot more player chatter. The two-man booth seems to be smarter and they offer more timely comments on the whole, singling out players on big plays and dissecting player performance. Suprisingly, the commentary does have a rather annoying glitch when it comes to calling injuries, as the play-by-play announcer tends to repeatedly talk about an injured player, even after he has been taken off of the field. If Tiki Barber gets injured on a play, the commentary shouldn't be talking about him being shaken up three or more playes afterwards, while he's not even on the field! This glitch isn't something that will necessarily make you not want to play the game, but it is surprising that such a glaring bug made it into the final version. Even with that glitch, the improved sound is easily noticeable and definitely enhances the NFL atmosphere of the game. The PA announcer is also much smarter in NFL2K1, announcing situations and specific play results including the player involved. The music is more of the same from last year, with some newer tracks mixed in. It would be neat to get some licensed music into the game rather than the generic stuff that's here already, but the music isn't as important as the rest of the sounds in the game.

Overall, NFL2K1 is quite impressive on its own, but when you throw in the online playability, the replay value is almost infinite and makes the game something very special. Until Madden 2001 arrives for PlayStation2 in October, NFL2K1 has the market practically cornered and it plays as good as it looks. This game is definitely a keeper, and if you don't own a Dreamcast, this game makes for one heck of an excuse to buy one.

Gameplay

One of NFL2K1's biggest strengths lies in its gameplay. Aside from the online capability (which I'll touch on a bit later), the game control engine is as tight as it's ever been, and with the maturation of the running game, NFL2K1 definitely becomes one of the most, if the the most overall, playable football games available. The running game now includes jukes and power moves, and running backs are now more difficult to take down. The passing game is as good as it was last year, and actually becomes more realistic as receivers have a higher tendency to drop passes, especially if they are thrown with a high rate of speed. This may become frustrating, especially on higher difficulty levels, but it is a part of the game. Defense is also as strong as last year's game and the AI (artificial intelligence) is smarter, as defensive players make better plays and pursue the quarterback better. There are a ton of gameplay options as well as many customization options for teams and players. You can create your own player, put him on a custom team, or just draft from the bottom up. Basically, NFL2K1 can be customized to any player's liking, and that's a definite plus. The biggest draw for NFL2K1 lies in its online capability, and for the most part, it is easily playable without too much distraction. Lag can be an issue, especially when playing on an outside ISP or playing against an opponent who's pretty far away from you. The games that I have played online experienced a bit of lag, but the lag was not consistent enough to ruin the online experience. As SegaNet's user base continues to expand, the lag issue will probably improve. Overall, the gameplay is at least as tight as it should be, if not a bit better than last year.

Sound

The sound was good enough last year and its actually better now. The commentating is even more personal involving the action on-field and to certain players and they all trash talk! I mean real trash talking to the player you're controlling! I love it!

Gameplay

To describe this in two words: little things. It's all the little things that make this game so great. You can actually run the ball now. Your good backs in this game will get their 100+ yards rushing unless you just plain suck. And watching them do so is like watching and playing a real game. Passing seems sped up a little since last year, but the same. Only passing difference I noticed is on wild passes, the receiver will catch it sometimes awkwardly with a chance of being hauled down more so than if he caught it in stride of the play. Like I said, the little things.

But gameplay is perfect. To sum it up, in rookie mode you have to be blind to lose a game but in all-pro you better have the wisdom and knowledge of a pro coach to win because they will make you pay. Online is the best. Have three other people in your house or three other people across the country it doesn't matter. I played some guy halfway across the country and it seemed more like my best friend sitting on my sofa next to me. Now if that isn't replayability I don't know what is! Haven't tried the "create player" or "GM mode" stuff yet but it's there too.

Summary

Well i must say that nfl 2k1 is the best football
game i have ever played. Its still has its minor flaws, but nothing that cant be fixed. Overall everything about this game is top notch. The presentation this year passes last year by 50 yds
and thats a lot to say. The menus are friendly and everything looks great. The game selection screen, the franchise mode. Its fabulous. Franchise mode is great. Everything seems right. Network play. well havent played since im in mexico. Something that really surprised me is how realistic the game is. The penalties seem to be in place. Now the computer actually does ecroachment and offsides, when did that happen before? The flow of the game makes you feel in a game. Players act like there real counterparts. The teams play they do in real life, this is the best part of this game. BUY IT! The best got better. Score 9.5 out of 10.0

Sound

Sound is absolutly great. Commentary is fun, eventhough it sometimes says things that are of mark. But otherwise the best comentary in a videogame. Music is actually good. I am a muscician and i think the music in the game is fun to listen and gives a good groove to the game. It makes you fell as though you are watching an actual fox telecast. Great! Another thing i liked, is the crowd. Finally it reacts to penaltys and to great plays. And they actually boo. Incredible. Score 9.0 out of 10.0

Gameplay

Gameplay is awesome. The running and passing game seem a little bit faster than before. Running was the main problem last year. Nfl2k1 is 100 times better. Running is a thing of beauty. The holes open up naturally, if you have a fast running back, your best bet is on the outside. Using Jerome Bettis? Right by the middle is your game. Passing is basically the same as last year, the only difference is that you have 3 speeds on the throw, and that makes it a lot more realistic. It does work. Defense is good, but i still get a little confused sometimes in what i have to do. But ill get used to it. Overall Great. Not better than Madden, just Different. A lot of what gameday should have been. Score 9.5 out of 10.0

Sound

Fantastic! The best commentary ever. VC really stepped up on this. The comments are actual intelligent and well timed. If you are having a bad game, you can be sure that the commentators are going to tell you with great detail. I was also impressed with the
crowd sounds. If the visiting team commits a penalty, you can be sure that the crowd is going to respond enthusiastically.

Gameplay

The game play is pretty much like your standard setup for a football game. Being a former GameDay freak, I was able to pick up NFL 2K and start playing very easily and the same can be said for this one. The most obvious change is the running game. It is faster, a lot smoother and seems easier to run. This is good, but can be frustrating when you are on defense. :) Also I like the fact that game has more potential for 'big plays'. It adds a lot to the excitement factor of the game.

I also like the AI. It seems tougher than last year, which is an improvement. Another factor is that the game is more balanced. I was playing the computer when they had a 50 yd pass play called back because they were holding in the backfield. That shows more realism. Really, like the computer can get a 50 yd play on my Chiefs defense (start the laughing...now :) ).

The game itself is more deep than last year. With the addition of the franchise mode, it adds a lot more playability to the game. Now only if Sega would add a training mode that had something to do with bowling like they seem to do for all the DC games (refer to Crazy Taxi and Virtua Tennis)

Summary

One word to catagorize those people who bought a PS2 just to play Madden...Morons! If you paid over $250 for a system that is a year away from internet play and is charging extra for a ethernet/modem then yes, you are a moron. This game will quite easily become one of the top ten games this year if not of all time and the systme is now $149. How many years have we been forced to run local leagues because EA simply lacked the vision to give us what we wanted. Well my fellow grid iron monsters the wait is over. EA has fumbled once to often and Sega has picked up the ball and is streaking for the end zone. Want to know if you've got what it takes to beat the best? Think you have the killer offensive or defensive custom play that will dominate the cyber field? Enough talking buddy...now it's time to see what you're made of...it's time to play NFL2k1

Sound

The 12th man is active and really gets behind their team and with surround sound it sounds like your actually on the field under the center. The fact that you now have online playing is enough of a reason to buy this sim. I've played several games against several opponants from various states and not once did I notice any lag between the systems. Seganet's servers are the real deal. I use my ISP to log in and had no trouble what so ever. I know Sega is now offering 50 free hours on Seganet just for buying the game and a free Dreamcast keyboard if you sign up with Seganet. So why are you still reading this review. Get your butt down to your local retailer and get online for some grid iron and if you happen to be my next opponent prepare for the frustration of a ball controlled offense and a swarming defense.

Gameplay

Last years game was a lot of fun but this years version is addicting. Everyone knows the running game has been dramatically improved and that was evident on my first running play when Tyrone Wheatley followed Jon Ritchie between the tackles and rumbled for 68 yards. Maximum passing has also been fine tuned and leading a receiver is much easier and more effective this year. Timing your throws is crucial to making completions now. I do not like the fact that receivers drop perfectly thrown balls when they are wide open, I guess it's the AI's way of making up for blown coverage. There's several new moves for the defense as well and the defensive line now opens holes for blitzing LB's with is a must for pass rushing. The comentary is sharp and fresh, not as many repeated lines
