Sound

at first listen, sound seems pretty sub-par as well. Some might think that the main theme song gets repetitive, but the song makes you feel like your stuck in a Charlie Brown cartoon, and you can record and replay variations and additions, and basicly create your own themes song.

Gameplay

'The game uses the GC's internal clock to synchronize the time of day and year with the real world. This means that if you don't play the game for a month or so, that same amount of time will have passed in the game's world when you come back.' This is the truly addictive element of the game. Like Ico, in certain respects, Animal Crossing is built around patience. You run errands for friends, write letters, catch fish, pay off your morgage, build relationships with the other town people, and fix up and decorate your home. No combat, just insect catching and the occassional bee sting.

Sound

The sound is decent. It's customizable. If you have a GBA and a GBA/GCN Link Cable, and an E-Reader, you cna make your own "Town Theme Music". This music WILL get stuck in your head, seeing as how it is played everytime you talk to someone, or every hour on the hour!! The background music is catchy, I found myself swaying to the tropical theme.... Overall, the sound is actually pretty good!

Gameplay

The gameplay is very smooth. With fluid transitions and a nice amount of interactivity between your environment such as trees, rocks, etc.. Nintendo has also blesses us with the ability to speed up dialogs (yay). Errands, Fishing, Insect Hunting, Artifact Searching, Bill Paying, and Interior Decorating are all on your "To-Do" List. This game uses the GCN's internal clock, which should relate to real time (if you set it properly). Animal Crossing uses this time when you play the game. Ex. If it is night in real life, it will be night in the game. Pretty cool. Also, if someone else you know is playing the game, they can pop their Memory Card in Slot 2, and you can hop on the train, and go to their town! On another note, no two towns are the same! Usually when I give game reviews, I give a number from 1-5 about how frustrating this game is, 1 being not, and 5 being really aggrivating. I give this game a 2.

Sound

Besides the fact that you can make your own tunes (albeit short), the in-game music is well done and not nearly as annoying as other GameCube titles (SUPER MONKEY BALL!). It's not loud, it's not obnoxious. It's kind of just there, and what's there isn't so bad.

Gameplay

The objective of Animal Crossing is to collect, find, and sell stuff. Why this may not seem very interesting, ask anyone who has ever played "Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind" what their favorite part of the game is... item finding! Also you must pay off your house and furnish it with all the cool gadgetery you find, as well as run errands for the townspeople, and hunt down treasures. The addition of a real-time clock means that the game WILL be different each and every time you play it. There's just so much stuff here (items, tasks, and more items), it will take a long time to get bored with this game.

Sound

More the interesting, you can hear, all kinds of different insects, you can hear the ocean, rain, Oids (wierd fire hidrant thing-ys), stomach growl, animals neighbors jibber in their own language, doors close/open, trains, make you own town theme song, collect house theme songs every Saturday night, Event-specific music (the BGM changes every hour or during special events), excellent menu SFX....

Gameplay

Simple. You can fish, collect rare items, gamble with your turnips, do landscaping with trees and flowers, participate in events, remodel you house, play classic NES games, decorate your living space, sell, buy, talk to animals, pick on animals, write letters to animals, run around, catch insects, follow Balloons with gifts in the air, Shake trees, run from bees, Design T-shirts, watch your neighbors trade stuff or grip at each other, ride a train to another villiage, make a face on a cat that has no face, catch a snail on a flower in the rain, get bit by a masquito around sunset time, donate you prized catches to a local night owl, receive mail....

Sound

I would have to say nice. Not fantastic, but nice. You can get alot of different tunes. Listening to K.K. Slider sing is really cool. The guy who brings you to the GBA island sings really funny songs too. The tunes are good but the quality isnt really great. You can make your own tune for the town that will sound every hour on the hour (16 note maximum) Do you get the idea yet that EVERYTHING is customizable?! For the most part I like the music. Nothing gets boring when the songs change every hour.

Gameplay

This is the game. Sound is OK and graphics are just above tolerable. Nothing else matters once you get hooked though. The kiddie image should not stop you from at least trying this game. Simple mundane tasks such as catching insects and running errands become so much more fun in the world of Animal Crossing. Everything is just SO ADDICTIVE. I can't drive home that point anymore. I play this game at least two hours a day and I never get tired of it. With the real time clock making it 8:00pm when its actually 8:00pm in the real world adds the best dimension to the game. Special holidays and events occur the day they are suppose to i.e. Halloween falls on October 31, the same day as Halloween in the real world so you better cut back on the treat or treating and spend some more time prancing around in customs with your rabbit neighbor. Just get this game. The only way you could possibly hate this game is if you are completely closed minded or if you have a job at night and sleep during the day, not so much to do at night, but some people are still awake. TRY THIS GAME FOR YOUR OWN SAKE. Don't blame me when you lose your job and family because you play this game nonstop.

Sound

Well, the sound is pretty cool.... for a Gameboy Advance. This is MIDI at its most basic. The sound cues are pretty cool, but it take a trained ear to distinguish between a cricket and a bell cricket. It's not much to write home about. The GC is capable of so much more.

When a game plays this well, the sound doesn't matter.

Gameplay

Animal Crossing is an acquired taste. You cannot go in with the same mentality that you'd take toward something like Mario. There is no ending to this game. There is no winning. To describe this as a cross between the Sims, Pokemon, & Harvest Moon would do Animal Crossing an injustice. It's life, only more fun. Live it the way you choose.

Even the lamest sounding tasks are fun in Animal Crossing. Pay your mortgage. Pay for house renovations. Suck up to neighbors for gifts or advice. Collect stuff. Write letters. Visit tropical islands engage in special events. This game will fit your style of play. Be the nicest, most accomodating person on the planet if you want to. No need to be completely nice either. It is possible to anger the townies, if you're so inclined.

From start to finish, this game is addictive. You'll want to do things for others. You'll want to attend the special events. You'll want to do so many things that would otherwise seem boring? Why? Personality. This game exudes it.

Sound

The music turns into white noise, but isn't bad to begin with. Sound effects are pretty minimal, but all the little touches (bees buzzing, crickets chirping, etc.) make the game work. Why can't we turn the music volume down without turning the FX down too? Making your own town 'soundbite' is a neat idea. Mine plays "O Canada..." right now. :)

I wish the characters spoke for real instead of pseudo-gibberish. They actually talk in English, but it's layered and garbled. WHy did the garble it? I would have liked voices, even if it was synthesized. Only other minor compaint is that you can't skip thru convos even faster, but the B button does speed it up.

Gameplay

Elegant and astounding! It's a fun version of life. There are many ways to get money, and once you have money you can work on a bigger house, and buy all sorts of things. It may not seem like it should be fun, but running errands, decorating your house (in thousands of different ways), making your own clothing and logos, treasure hunting, gardening, are all a blast.

On top of that there are holidays to celebrate, and all kinds of special events hidden in the game. I've read probably 50 articles on this game, and yet today, my first full day of playing, I had an event no one else has ever mentioned. ON MY FIRST DAY! :)

I don't even have a butterly net or fishing rod yet, nor have I got my letter from Farway Museum, but when I do, I have TONS more to do on top of what I can already do on the first day.

And I still haven't visited any new towns, or had new villagers, or traded any stuff.

Two minor complaints: I wish there was a way to trade with the other human players. You can give them something in the mail, and ask for something in return, but it's up to them. Also, I wish I could give gifts to the computer characters without mailing them. I guess getting mail from them in return kind of makes up for it though.

This could be the best family game ever made -- with one condition. This game is best played by each family member for maybe 30-45 minutes a day while no one else is around. Much of the fun of this game is in the surprised you leave for one another. If you watch another player play, a lot of surprises will be ruined. WHy a good family game then? Because it's awesome to get into the game and see what has changed in town after others have played.

This game is delightful. Probably will end up playing this game more than any other, long-term. SO much variety. (And di you know you can exchange items with people across the country using specially created codes?) I think you should try this. It's takes video games into a peaceful, imaginative, and friendly setting, without be dull and bland.

Sound

Pretty much "In-your-ear-out-the-other" stuff, but the voices are a riot! It's like a throwback to the teacher on the Peanuts cartoons! Very good stuff!

Gameplay

Basically, you own a house, have a job, and take care of mundane (but really, really fun) things around you. So you are controlling a miniature version of life. Things happen around you according to the built-in internal clock of your Gamecube: seasons change, people start to miss you, certain events happen.

The people in the game are all likable. Doing chores for them is a great experience. This is the bulk of what I've been doing as of late (seeing as how I don't have a shovel, fishing rod, or an NES yet). In fact, I got into an interesting argument with my brother while playing. I was getting an item for Bob, the neighborhood kitty, and my brother called for me:

Chris: "Bob, you're gonna be late for class!"

Me: "NO!!! Bob needs his glass case!!!"

Chris: "Why are you addressing yourself in the third person?"

Like I said, this game will make you do crazy things like that.

Sound

I dont like the sound either...very anoying beeping voice language spoken by the towns folk. This can be turned off but then all ya hear is....uh...background music....wich isnt really anygood I might add!

Gameplay

Uh...err:(. So far I gave been picking up shells, delivering boring items to a few chessy charectors, (and basicly wondering why this thing costs $50). You gotta deliver items, collect shells, design clothes (yay), it is all very slow and unexciting! Everything I have been asked to do by the town folks has been boring and I cant wait to get it over with to maybe see something entertaing....but I keep being disapointed.

You can...uh...make little tunes and ugly clothing designs for a couple hours!.....?

You can get classic nes games....but I have spent 5 years of my life playing all those games to death...Ive played them all hundreds of times and plus I have an NES....you can get emulators off the internet...so if you have a PC...this feature means nothing!

Summary

I will admit that I was skeptical. Afterall, I am 32 years old, and I have been playing video games for eons it seems. When I first started playing this game, my initial thoughts were, "uh oh". It looked like a kiddie game and I instantly thought I had just wasted $50. But don't let those kiddie graphics fool you. What it boils down to is this: I patiently gave the game a chance. On one hand, I am very glad I did because I find Animal Crossing to be one of the funnest games I have ever played. On the other hand, I am frustrated that I patiently gave this game a chance. This is simply because it is so addicting that I am now spending most of my time playing the sucker. All I can say is this: Buy the game, and give it a chance. You will be glad you did because it is a game that never ends!

Sound

The sound in this game is fine and dandy. There are countless songs in this game which change every hour. This way you won't have to hear the same old song over and over. Pretty cool. The animals with whom you interact have an odd yet humorous type of speech. Listening to them is funny, but it can drive one insane if he listens to it too much. HA! All in all, the sound fits the game perfectly. There is no need for big, fancy musical scores in a game like this.

Gameplay

The gameplay for this game is unlike any other. It is a communication game. It is an item search game. These two characteristics are what keeps me going back to the power button of my Gamecube.

The trading system is just icing on the cake. How powerful is this characteristic? Well, it is powerful enough to make a 32 year old man go online at various messages boards to beg others for fruit. How sad is that? HAHA!

There are so many things in this game which can be done: Trading, fishing, insect collecting, fossil collecting, Art collecting, furniture collecting, tree-planting, house decorating....the list goes on and on.

I gave Gameplay a score of 5 only because there wasn't an option to give it a score of 6. So there!
