Sound

Sound: I like the sound. A lot of games sound is not a huge issue. In this game, sound can get you killed if you make too much of it. The fire and surroundings all make the appropriate sound if manipulated in any way. Bushes that I ran by, made a very distinct bush sound when hit, nice touch. All this adds to the realism that you are indeed Sam Fisher, and you are indeed up to your neck in some deep BS.

The eventual comparison to Metal Gear Solid naturally folows this. While I have not played through this entire game yet, I've played enough to be pretty confident when I say I believe it will be better. The graphics are superior, and the realism seems a notch higher, but that could be debated. If you liked Metal Gear Solid, then you should certaintly like this game and go purchase it right now. If you didn't like it, then 1) You are a weird person and 2) you may not like this game. Which, to me, seems like a hard game to not like.

On first impression, I'd rate this game a 9.7 on the scale of 1-10.

Gameplay

and....insane. Can jump off walls to spring to ledges to climb up them. Not a big deal, right? Tons of gams have this. Yeah, but he looks VERY realistic doing it, does it with normal human agility, looks how it would if a person of said physical skills did it in real life. Small glitch: Game tells me to jump onto a wall above a pool. Except there is no water in th ditch, thus it's not a pool. Probably rushed to complete he game, didn't bother with something as minor, hopefully they didn't do this too much.

When landing from a higher jump, he lands harder due to the impact, and is crouched a bit from landing. Very cool.... and if you fall too far, he dies. From about 30 feet or higher seems to be how high.

Controls are pretty tight. Camera has been solid so far as well. You have complete camera control with the right analog stick, so it's hard to get a bad angle. The night vision looks VERY cool.

Ok onto covert ops training...

You have to pick open a door. It's not hard, but you'll try it, not figure it out, and have to go back and read the box that gives you clues. Read it slowly, then try again. (did I mention how cool the night Vision mode looks?

This follows with a test on interrogating someone for information. Follow behind people, grab them, make them talk, then KO them.

Few more tests follow, nothing too hard. Finish it up by crossing a room silently. You can be heard, and relitavely easy if not careful. Game also hits save spots fairly frequently (after doing anything fairly significant it seems), another plus.

Sound

Just like the shadows, sound is hyper realistic. Even if you're in deepest darkest shadow, press that analog stick a little too far and you make enough noise to raise suspicion...

What do you do?

Why, duck behind a curtain (swaying and deforming in perfect real-life simulation), wack on thermal vision (one of the more glorious and USEful graphical treats to be seen), and shoot that guard in the head, watching his body heat dissapate over a couple of minutes.

Pick up the body, stagger into a dark corner and drop it (so as not to set alarms off), hear a noise, swivel round (gun crosshair swinging around realistally and dramatically), shoot the light out, wack on nightvision, take the next guard out, jump up, grab onto a pipe and monkey-bar your way over any other guards investigating the noise.

Pure. Goodness.

Gameplay

It has everything. Super cool and incredibly replayable gameplay, perfectly balanced weapons, ultra cool gadgets (how amazing is it to rappell of a side of a building).

Recreate your favourite moments from every Bond/Mission Impossible/random espionage thriller you have ever seen.

Not only that, but do every mission in the game in at least 6 different ways.

How is this possible? Insanely intuitive controls. (That third person camera is second to none). Huge range of options. (Possible to go through almost all the game without using a single bullet). Deeply immersive, realistic graphics.

Summary

Few of us have not yet heard of Sam Fisher, or at least Splinter Cell, the game in which he plays the lead role. Web sites and magazines alike have hyped this game to the point where I nearly burst just waiting for it. Whenever a game receives this much attention, the outcome is almost always aweful when it actually hits the shelves because there is no way that any game could live up to the wild expectations of us gamers.

Well, folks, Splinter Cell lives up to it all.

Yesterday I was delighted to see the Fedex lady at my door with a small box. I though to myself, "No way.. I didn't expect you until tomorrow!" After signing for the package and shredding the box in a few fluid movements, I recovered the Splinter Cell jewelcase and began working against the celephane wrapper with the desperation matched only by a smoker deprived of nicotine.

In an instant I had the game loaded up into my xbox and the title screen flashed up on the set. A warm fuzzy feeling tickled through me as I watched the intro movie that featured Sam Fisher in all his ASSKICKIN' glory.

At this point I couldn't handle it anymore, so I started up a game and began to play...
************************************************
Splinter Cell (SC) casts you as Sam Fisher, an ex-NavySeal now working for a top secret government agency known as the Third Echelon. Fisher is a seasoned vet who's seen his share of action and his experience is invaluable to the Third Echelon as they send him through missions of covert espionage in hopes to gaining critical information pertaining to terrorism and possible war.

The story line is well written and plays out in real time as you play through the missions. Between certain levels, you'll see the standard CGI sequences that also help clue you in on what is going on.

In SC, be prepared to take full advantage of shadows and the stealthful abilities of Sam Fisher to avoid enemy detection. You need all the help you can get when you realize that you've been dropped in the middle of a hostile area where everyone's sporting AK-47's and they have a nasty chip on their shoulders when it comes to American spies.

SC features excellent gameplay without any defects or serious issues to sidetrack your attention from a wonderful experience. Take my word for it, this is what Xbox owners have been waiting for.

*I just want to say that I've never given a game straight 5's before. Splinter Cell has earned that score by truly wowing me.

Sound

The sound effects of SC are just as good as the rest of the game. As soon as you throw your first bottle against a wall and here it burst, you'll agree that these guys did a great job putting audio effects in.
*********************************************
I've found the voice acting in SC to be quite good. On several occasions, you'll stumble upon a conversation in progress and some will probably make you laugh. Most of the voices I've heard have pretty bad russian accents, but at some point you really have to just have fun with a game. Had the developers wanted to split hairs enough to make russian accents authentic, then why not just make russians speak in russian? Then you wouldn't even be able to understand what they're saying and you'd end up missing out on all the cool scripted sequences that are sometimes quite humorous.
Sam's Voice was done by the guy that starred in Starship Troopers as the teacher/platoon leader. His voice sports the perfect combination of tough guy, nonchalant bad-ass, and hero.
*********************************************
SC's musical score is mostly made up of orchistrated numbers that fit the theme quite nicely. If you've ever played rainbow six, rogue spear, or ghost recon, you'll recognize the sound of this music from any of those titles. It manages to be patriotic and somber at the same time.

Gameplay

Moving Sam about is quite easy. The controls of this game are set up in such a fashion that anyone could pick it up and in a matter of minutes be comfortable enought to sneak about and take down badguys.

Sam is able to do a little bit of everything to help him achieve his goals. he can sneak, jump, roll, duck, hug walls and shoot around corners, climb ladders/pipes/fences, hang off ledges and shimmy, pick locks, rappel, line-zip, use badguys as human shields, and much, much more. What's a spy without really cool gadgets, too? Well, Sam Fisher has gadgets a-plenty including lockpicks, doorcams (allows you to look under the crack of a door to the other side), medkits, nightvision and thermal vision goggles, a trusty palm piolot, sticky cams (cameras that can be shot onto a wall), laser microphones, and other stuff that I don't want to give away.
*************************************************
Enemy AI has been done quite convincingly. If you are detected but not identified, the enemy will approach where he last saw you and call out "Who's there" "identify yourself" or whatever. If you successfully hide while he's looking for you he'll dismiss it, saying something like "Must have been a shadow..."
If you enter a room and shut off the lights, the enemies will shout "who did that!?" and then rush over to turn them back on again. Enemies can detect you by both sight and sound so you have to stay quiet as well as stay hidden to really be sneaky.
************************************************
Game objectives are given out at the beginning of each mission and dynamically change or are updated through the mission in realtime while you're playing. This makes the storyline move along nicely while you're in the middle of playing the game.

Sound

Now i dont have a great sound system but i can say one thing, anything that you shoot or rub against sounds like you actually touched it. I have caught myself looking around the room sometimes when stuff happens. Enough of this, im loosing valuable game time.

P.S.
If you dont have an x-box go get one, if you have a P.S.2 trade it in and all your games to get this, x-box has MGS now so you no longer need a playstation 2.

Gameplay

Gameplay is unparrallel to other games that are out now. I cant see how you can give this game anything less then a perfect 10. You can complete missions alot of different ways, and still come back for more. The controls are on point and everything reacts the way it would in the real world. You can either use your mini camera to see whats in the room your about to enter, crack the door open a little to get a peek, or if you make it far enough in the game you can shoot out little sticky cameras to survey the hall/room. Im going to stop rambling on about it and tell you again to go grab this game as soon as possible.

Sound

The sound is simply out of this world. No problems here at all. The sound of Sam’s footsteps are consistent with how fast you move him. The surfaces walked upon are mimicked perfectly. If you have a surround sound system, you will be looking over your shoulder. It’s just that good.

Gameplay

The controls are very smooth and if you are used to the Halo movement, you will have no problem. UBI put a lot of love and care into this package and it shows. The game atmosphere is really puts you there. You will literally spend minutes crouched in the shadows trying to figure out how to get past guards, or from one place to another without being seen or setting off an alarm. I absolutely love it, but if you don’t have the patience for this type of thing then this game is not for you. You can’t go in blazing guns away. There is some gun play, but stealth is the key here. Some say the replay value is limited, but not for me. I replayed one section within the second mission three times just to finish it a variety of ways. Plus the promise of downloadable levels on XBOX Live is really something to look forward to.

Sound

Get a 5.1 digital reciever. I could drone on and on about how the sound is great from a t.v.-but I do not know-I only play the games as they were meant to be heard. This game far surpasses any preconcieved notions of what "stellar sound" can be. The crystal method sountrack is phenomonal, the real-time ambient sound effects are fantastic. You really appreciate your investment (5.1) if you have it.

Gameplay

Ridiculous. I went on and on about hitman 2, but splinter cell surpasses that. Addicting, precision based gameplay. Where MGS2 really failed is the want to come back and re-try a mediocre game with good graphics. This game is stupendously a thrill to play. You are only given a list of objectives (which differ dramatically from mission to mission) and it is up to you to get them accomplished. You're imagination can run-wild-seriously. Try picking up any of the hundreds of objects in the game-chucking it down a hallway-while the SUPER SMART AI investigates- you sneak by-using real shadows that really conceal you. Paired with intuitive controls, fluid-FLUID animation, and an almost exploratory-like way to play the game, and you have the winner of the game of the year in your hands. Taking out terrorists is a breeze, but interrogating them is even funner. (ha ha-watch them wince in fear!!-woo hoo!)

Summary

First of all, I would like to let out my disgust towards gamespot.com for giving this game a score of 8.6 out of 10. Come on now. They had the nerve to give Metal Gear Solid 2 for the Xbox and PS2 a higher rating than Splinter Cell. This game kills MGS2 in every single way possible. And I hear people are saying how you can't compare the two because they are totally different games. Hmmmmm, well I guess the fact that MGS2 TRIES to be a stealth game while SC IS a stealth game make the two totally different. I think most of these people have been fanboys of the MGS series for too long now and don't want to accept the fact that an Xbox game out-done them. And if you think that I'm just a hater of the MGS series then you're wrong. I loved the first one that came out for the PSOne but haven't played the second one till it came out on the Xbox. But after playing the demo for SC during the same time I rented MGS2, I couldn't stand playing MGS. I ended up playing the demo more than the game that I was so eagre to play ever since it came out on the PS2.

Sound

The sound of glass shattering, the voice acting, the sound of the wooden floors as you walk across it.... everything about the sound is perfect. Almost a little too realistic if you ask me.

Gameplay

Now the reason why I barely touched MGS2 after playing SC is because of the over-all feel of the game. There's way more of a realistic feel and look to SC. The COMPLETE control of the camera angle, the various amount of moves (i.e. splits between a hallway, moving while shooting your gun, crouching while walking, etc.), and the large amount of gadgets make SC the greatest stealth game to date. And unlike MGS2, it wasn't plagued by numerous movies in between the actual gameplay. Video games are meant to be played and NOT to watched. It also felt like MGS2 had too much of an arcade feel to it. I don't mind arcade-ish type games but when we're talking about spy games, I think the arcade style should not apply. I'm not saying that MGS2 should be an arcade game, but when compared to SC, it sure feels like one. I guess it's the arial camera angle and the fact that it's more of an action game that make MGS2 feel this way.

Summary

This one caught me by surprise. I mean, I have heard about it but after seeing some reviews I had to try it.. So I went out and bought the game. I dont usually buy single player games, I rent them until I beat them and thats it. Well, I rented Metal gear 2 a few days ago and now I may as well bring it back 3 days early because when you have game as great as Splinter Cell, it makes Metal gear seem boring. Im a huge fan of this type of game, and Ive played all the good ones, this is by far the best yet. I see alot of straight 5s in alot of the reviews, and I can totally understand why, but the game does have a few flaws. Overall, this game is WELL worth the $50, highly recommended. One thing that would be cool if they could add it in the future for download is a cooperative mode for 2 or more xboxs. Anyway, this game rocks

Sound

I have crappy speakers and no surround sound so I cant get the full experience, but everything seems to be great, the enemies talk alot and the weapons and ambient sounds are great. Im gonna have to give sound a 5, mainly because Im willing to bet that this game is much better with surround sound and boomin speaks. The xbox always seems to have killer sound.

Gameplay

The very first thing I noticed when I started this game up is the awesome control, very tight and responsive. The camera works great, rarely is there a time when you get frustrated with camera angles.

The gadgets and weapons in this game are perfect, so many ways to take down the enemy, and being sneaky is great fun. I think the AI is the best Ive seen, but they arent perfect. Sometimes they will walk right up to you without even seeing you. I suggest setting the display brightness down until you cannot see Sam in a dark shadow, then you will now for sure when you are invisible.

This game is a masterpiece and I can say that after only playing about half the game and totally ignoring the story and cutscenes, I just want to keep playing, screw the cutscenes, this game is too fun!

I gonna have to give this game a 5 here, even though theres some minor flaws it cannot even come close to out weighing the good, theres lots and lots of good here, buy it, play it, have fun.
