Summary

Dreamcast is what got me into the gaming world, if it wasent for DC I wouldnt be playing games. Its probably the most fun system I have ever played. Unfortunatly I bought it late 2001. The only regret I have is not buying it at launch.

Sound

Sound is like any other you'll hear on any other system. I dont have any problems with the DC's sound.

Gameplay

Depends on the games, but mostly all games on the Dreamcast are good. Especailly Sonic and Resident Evil. Gameplay should NOT be a problem for the DC. The DC has good quality gameplay.

Summary

The Sega Dreamcast was introduced in Japan I belive around early 1999, that's around the time I placed an order to have one shipped from overseas w/five games; House of the dead 2, Virtua fighter 3, Sonic adventure, Sega rally, Tokyo Highway battle, and Power stone. Initially I was amazed at the graphical leap sega had over Playstation & N64, after using the system for a few months I realized that besides the obvious graphical and audio upgrade there wasn't much of a diffrence as far as gameplay was concerned, don't get me wrong the Sega Dreamcast was and still is a fine console with many quality titles and a pretty extensive and varied game library. The addition of online play later in its life added something new and innovative to the console market, although not widely used, and the ability to play top sega arcade titles (sometimes the best arcade games around) at home was a great advantage. At its inital launch Dreamcast did very well in terms of sales (better than sony did w/the playstation release; Sega pushed over $97 million in sales..the first day!!) and just the overall marketing push by Sega to promote the system, it launched with over 17 games, and was sold out in most chains prior to launch. Many early adopters of the system praised it for introducing the masses to the next generation in consoles but at the same time there were alot of hold outs..people still clinging on to their Playstations weary of sega's prior console history. Sega just months after the NorthAmerican release was faced w/ Sony's inevitable counter move..PS2. As soon as info about Playstation 2 leaked out into the mainstream Dreamcast sales started to dip. At this time Sega started doing what they did best release even more quality software for the Dreamcast, titles like Soul Caliber,Dead or alive 2 and sega's very own 2K sports series aswell as significant third party support helped maintain the Dreamcast afloat for sometime but many jumped from Playstation to PS2 and completely wrote of sega's 128 bit effort as inferior. A real shame, I would watch kids buy Playstations at Circuit city for $99.00 (prior to the Ps2 launch) and completely ignore all the Dreamcasts on the shelves; a real testament as to how poorly consumers seemed to be informed about how great Dreamcast really was. I'm not partial to sega in some reguards I do admit Sony's superiority w/ Ps2 in terms of computing and processing power but it just seemed to me like Dreamcast graphics where cleaner, at some point I had Dead or Alive 2 on both Dreamcast and Ps2 and did a side by side comparison of the two, both games were identical, except for one thing the Ps2 version seemed to have more jaggies and lower res textures on some of the backrounds...perplexing. All in all Dreamcast is a great value for the money (you can find one for no more than $30.00 at some places ; games are hard to come by though)even with games no longer being produced the variety of software left behind is extensive and varied and you will swear some games look as good (if not better) than Ps2.

Sound

Sound veried from game to game.

Gameplay

Gameplay I belive varies by software titles not consoles...if I was to comment on gameplay in terms of all Dreamcast software I would have to say it is varied.

Summary

Sad. This one word sums up Sega's last, ill-fated attempt at the console market. Again, in typical fashion, Sega had to be first on the block with the new technology, and again, this killed them. The Genesis had the SNES, the Saturn had the Playstation, and the Dreamcast had the PS2, XBOX, and Gamecube. Time has proven again and again that a consumer gaming market can not support more than 3 systems. The weakest always falls out. The many Sega failures such as the Master System, Saturn and Dreamcast are almost always due to a few things. 1. Being of lesser technology. The Genesis was in almost all ways inferior to the SNES. The SNES had a much larger color pallet and a better (much better) sound chip. This allowed for better looking, better sounding games. The Saturn was also inferior to the PS1. The Dreamcast, although a 128 bit system is simply not up to par with it's competitors, the XBOX, PS2 and GC simply blow it away. 2. Lack of support. Sega had dropped, and often suddenly (except the Genesis) all it consoles. Lack of must have titles coupled with down right crummy titles and arcade repeats killed this system. 3. Te Sega "jack of all trades" approach. Sega wants their systems to do everything and anything. This approach gets away from the real task, PLAYING GAMES. Anyone remember the Sega CD? How about the 32X? You get the point, if I want to surf the net I'll use my computer. These things add up, and it finally killed the Dreamcast.

Sound

The Sound is ok. Effects and play back are normal but the DC does tend to make more sounds than the PS2.

All in all the Dreamcast is a great system that should not have gone out of bussiness. If you want a good system but you only have $60.00 get the Dreamcast. I you have over $150.00 then go out and get the Gamecube.

PS - The Dreamcast always lives on in my mind.

Gameplay

The Sega Dreamcast is a great system. The gameplay is Good but could be better. You can play Music Cd's and CDR's. There memory cards are the best out there. It's a VMU. You can actully download mini games to the VMU. Such as Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Now lets talk about the games. There games are okay! I hate House Of the Dead 2, Sega GT, Illbleed, and Dino Crisis. The games I like are in Categories listed below.

Action Games - Virtua Cop 2, and DOA 2

Adventure Games - Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Frogger 2, and OOGA BOOGA

Sports Games - NHL 2k2, NFL 2k, Championship Surfer, and Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 and 2

Racing Games - Crazy Taxi 1 and 2, Demolition Racer No Exit, Wild Metal, GTA 2, and Super Runabout San Fran Edition.

Sound

The sound is crisp and clear and is capable of 3d effects like echo, chorus, and some sound muffling. Its like listening to a game running on a Sound Blaster live sound card.

Gameplay

This system has a good plethoria of game titles. Most of what I have played are arcade titles like Spawn, Powerstone2, and other capcom fighting games and all of them are perfect ports of the coin-op version. Fun factor is the purpose of console games and Dreamcast hits the spot when it comes to giving you this perk. Armed with a 56k modem, multiplay on console is now a reality. (although I haven't tested multiplayer games here I expect to have some lag issues.) The controller is somehow ergonomically designed for people with small hands since it will give cramps on people with large hands. With an analog directional controller and two analog triggers, playing on racing titles is a blast. But playing it on 6 button fighting games is awkward (It has a digital directional controller but buttons are hard to press since it has only 6 buttons... 4 on the thumb pressing side and two on top) It has four controller sockets in which will make a good party entertainment (especially on Powerstone2).

Summary

I would have bought DC sooner had I known how great it is! What a tremednous system for $30! I can't believe that this system was not supported by more gamers. I was one of the ones that was sucked in by Sony - I got the PSX and was going to wait for PS2, but got out of gaming before PS2 came to be and I missed the DC ship! Last week I was in EB and about to purchase 2 PO Xbox games when I noticed the flier for 29.99 DC! I rushed over to the DC shelf, picked up HOD2 and Wacky Races and A VMU, went to the counter and asked for a DC. Rushed home, hooked it up and was shocked!! Great gameplay, graphics and sound. I would have to say this think gives PS2 a run for it's money. Then I noticed that this thing had a modem-built in!! I have ordered the webbrowser cd and I can't wait to play online! I hope people still play this thing!! I wish Sega had not dropped out of the hardware market, things would be interresting with Sega, Sony, MS and Nintendo battling it out.

Summary

I always thought of gaming consols as child's play. Yes, I owned a Sega Genesis back in the day, but returned it. I thought I was "too old" for it. I was 24. I'm 34 years old now, and after 10 years the Sega Dreamcast is the first gaming console I ever truly owned. Sega made what I believe to be a machine that does one thing and does it with such grace and style that no other gaming console today can match. The Sega Dreamcast is a work of art. Something that has truly been lost in the gaming industry.

While many may say the Sega Dreamcast was doomed to failure, this is simply not the case. The system demanded a lot of it's developers. It was the only 128-but system on the market at the time. Developers were learning how to write for a completely new architecture. The Sega Dreamcast title library showcases some that showed what the system was designed to do, while others showed how older games, relying on older technology could be improved upon by the Dreamcast's advanced processing powered. The system is truly the Crown Jewel of systems. It dared to be different and like many before it, laid the foundation for others to follow. This is one gaming console that should be owned by anyone who enjoys playing games.

Sound

I was told that the Sega Dreamcast would support Dolby Digital sound or Dolby 5.1, so as long as the title support it. Overall, the Sega Dreamcast sound system is excellent. Like all hardware and software combination you need the right equipment. The Sega Dreamcast was designed to deliver magnificent sound. Hearing Phantasy Star Online with my standard TV speakers was great. However, hooking the Dreamcast up to my ALTEC Lansing powered speaker system with powered sub-woofer was incredible. I felt the thuds as my feet clomped on the floors of the forest. The echoes of explosions reverted within the caverns as I defeated enemies in the Ruins and Caves. Playing "Shenmue II (UK Import)", the people of China seemed to be all around me as the voices were literally thrown all over the room. Having the proper system of speakers can make the difference between a squeak and "Sonic" Boom. The Sega Dreamcast's sound system delivers what Sega intended, and Sega intended this system to be hooked up to a powered amp or powered speakers with sub woofer. Trust me - great sound only comes from great gear -- the Sega Dreamcast is only one part of that gear.

The most remarkable game play feature of the system was of course hands down the ability to play online with multiple people from all over the world. It, as far as I know, let players not only play online with others, but share game content as well. Not just get online and shoot each other, but cooperate, exchange items, and even characters. One could even play games downloaded from the web on your Visual Memory card. A first (and only) for a game console. This is one system that could literately do everything gamers wanted, and did it well. At the time, the Dreamcast boast the largest online gaming library. Today's "Next Gen" Johnny Come Latelies are, well, still playing "catch up".

Summary

I ended up getting my dreamcast by way of bootlegging and im glad i did. from the moment i first started playing the system i thought it was pretty amazing. i remember playing 2k1 and then i remember how boring it became after only 10 td passes in the first game. i like a game where you actually have to develop your own strategy not a game where all you have to do is pass it to jerry rice for a 40 yd td pass. when you finish a football game the score should be more along the lines of actual nfl scores. right away i threw my dreamcast in the closet for about 2 hours complaining to my boy down the street that i wanna ps2 and he told me that he couldnt get them yet so i went to my local blockbuster and rented some games and when i go to play them my dc starts making this really loud noise and from that point on i no longer accept bootlegs. now i have a x box ps2 and gamecube and a dust noisy dreamcast up in the closet.

Summary

Every once in a while, there comes a truly great system. Unfortunately, if there IS a really great system, you have to ram it down people's throaghts to get it recognized. Such was the case of the Dreamcast. Like it's predeccessor, the Saturn, the ill-fated Dreamcast was truly a soldier of honor who was killed amongst the bombs of under-publicity and bullets of "Superior" consoles on the battlefield of gaming. The crisp visuals, eardrum-ecstasy sounds and the awesome game linup somewhere got lost, and a truly wonderful sytem died, taking Sega with it. And of all the things to do, they ransacked its grave. All the franchises went to other systems, and it was lost forever.

My purpose is to keep the memory alive, to keep the great days of Sega fresh in our heads. Where has Evolution gone? Where is Skies of Arcadia? Who took Shenmue? Many a game decided to bust out of the corpse of the console and make their ways to the gaming giants. People completely forget how it was, and how much entertainment it brought us.

So read on, and observe the candlelight vigil. God bless you, Dreamcast, you will be missed.

Sound

The sound was as lovely as the Sirens themselves. Well, not really. It just projecdted it well, but the soundtrack to each game was a blessing. From Punk with THPS, to beatiful orchestrated Skies of Arcadia, to Techno in any dance game, it was all gold. There isn't much to say here.

So everyone, all I ask is to pull away from your PS2, GC and XBOX, and remeber the good old days of the Dreamcast.

Gameplay

The gameplay of this console was something to remember. The sharp lineup of games always gave us a thing to do. Every genre had at least one must-buy game on the thing, and we liked it. When that little white box was witched on, it took me on a time warp. To the time where Sega was in its infancy, and developed the Genesis, a true gaming console with the potential to grow. And grow it did. Shooting out games like Sword of Vermilion, Revenge of Shinobi, and Sonic. All these games rushed back into my memories. All these games attributed to the Dreamcast, with their excellent gameplay and design. So Sega took this collection of games and brought it into a greater system. They waited, studied other consoles, and took every element and put it all into this little box in front of me.

As you may expect, the games are good.

Every aspect of it was perfect. The challenge, the stories, everything was flawless. It's ahrd to forget those days.

Summary

The only shortcoming to befall the Dreamcast, is the fact that I bought it for $200, when now you can probably get it and 50 games by trading in one Atari 2600 game. Other than that, the system was excellent and I was sad to see it go. The DC had some of the best games out there, and that's what makes or breaks a system, which is why I was surprised to see it fail. I believe it was the failure of the Sega CD, 32x and Saturn which led to the DC's demise. This was unfortunate, because Sega had some kick ass software, but I can't blame people for being put off by Sega's reputation.

Even those Sega bashers out there still cannot deny the superior software for the DC. Resident Evil:CV, Crazy Taxi, the NBA and NFL2k series, Shenmue, Sonic 1 & 2, etc. The games were and still are some of the best out there, period.

Overall, the DC is money well spent, especially since you can purchase a new one for $50 or less. Don't get me wrong, I still love my PS2, and I want a Cube desperately (RE anyone?) but the DC has an exceptional library of software that cannot be overlooked.

Summary

I think that if you buy a Dreamcast, it'll make you forget about the newer systems. I have the Dreamcast, two controllers, a VMU, Ulitimate Fighting Championship, Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, NBA 2K1, NFL 2K1, NBA Showtime, Virtua Tennis, Mat Hoffmans's Pro BMX, EGG, Jet Grind Radio, Quake 3, Sega GT, and I ordered Marvel VS Capcom 2. I play the system almost every day.I have some of the good games, but the Dreamcast library of good games is HUGE! There are all the great fighting games, such as: UFC, Soul Calibur, KOF 99, KOF Evolution, Guilty Gear X, all the Capcom games. If you're into racing there's Sega GT, Test Drive Le Mans, SF Rush 2049, Test Drive 6 and so on. There aren't that many RPG's that i'm aware of, but the ones I do know of are good, like Grandia 2, PSO, Skies of Arcadia, and Record of Lodoss War. And just about all the Sega sports games are the best. And there's still even more good games! And to think that the Dreamcast was selling for a mere $50. That's the price of a game! The only reason the Dreamcast died is because those spoiled little Pokemon loving kids had to buy into the PS2 hype, and it took a year to get some pretty good games, while the Dreamcast had definitive games at it's launch. But I must admit that GTA 3 is pretty sweet!
