Summary

I was really looking forward to playing F1 world, especially since i had my MC2 steeering wheel. After hours and hours of playing, i'm now convinced that this game is half what it could have been. The opponents take the corners like they are on rails, they mercilessly ram you at every turn, and go 40mph slower than you in the straightaways, so they become unavoidable obstacles. Great graphics and sound of course, but the control could have been better. It takes so much time to find a usable setup for the race that you want to stop playing before the Qualifs are over.If you do find a setup that lets you corner at a reasonable speed, you'll still find that it's impossible to brake efficiently. You either crash into the guy in front of you, or you get hit and spin out. That's probably because your opponents stop on a dime in some corners or take the turn without slowing down. Don't even think about playing with the flags ON, you'll get blackflagged on the first lap every time. The only thing that keeps me trying is the against the clock option, which is fine, because there's nobody to hit you all the time.

Summary

I bought my Dreamcast the day it came out on 9-9-99, and I must say it is the best system I have ever owned. I own a PS2 as well, and I love it. But while PS2 may be the system that ends up surpassing the Dreamcast as far as "awesomeness" goes, for now the Dreamcast is still number one.

Why, you ask? Just look at all the AWESOME GAMES for the system! I have yet to play one Dreamcast game that I can honestly say was really bad (and I've played a lot). I will recommend games by genre in the GAMEPLAY section of this review.

I also feel that I should say that there is nothing wrong with the standard Dreamcast controller. Sure, it could have used more buttons, but overall it is very good and most importantly it is comfortable.

Overall, if you don't have a Dreamcast yet, PLEASE do yourself a favor and buy one NOW! You would not want to miss out on the best system ever made so far.

Summary

Oh my god this is the best console ever made. In this review I will be talking alot about SEga the company so bear with me. Sega is a great gaming company that gets alot of crap about their systems which are really the best systems ever made. With the Genesis they gave us some of the best games like the Sonic trilogy that has lived on for more than a decade. With the Game Gear they gave us the best handheld ever made the in my opinion surpasses the GBA by far with a game library out of this world. Then there was the Saturn that gave us that fighting gem Virtua Fighter. Then they finally got a great hand dealt to them with the Dreamcast the little white machine that worked it's way into all of our hearts. And only now after it's death do gamers realize how dear it was to all of our hearts. Hell, in my opinion the Dreamcast should get the Posthumous award (award for great achievement after death) for the year 2002!!!!!

Summary

This gaming console is the best one ever made it surpasses PS2 by far. I did a review a while back but it is under the name Tim. I had to do another because this is such a great system there is much more to say. I recently got the SUPER NINTENDO emulator I downloaded from dcemulation.com to work and that just gives me more reason to keep it. Now I can play the great library of games for Dreamcast and the great library for Game Boy, SNES, Genesis, and NES. If you have the hard drive space for all the files you have to download I would download one or all of these emulators or download all the files you need for the DIVX MOVIE PLAYER!!! So you see who needs the $300 PS2 when you have a great library of games and a DIVX (so what if it's not DVD) player. It's still only $50 bucks to watch great movies on your Dreamcast.

Summary

The Dreamcast is as the name itself implies--> its a >>dream Playstation. I was planing on buying the PS2 but being.. (cough, cough) ..poor and stuff i decided to buy the dreamcast which now was $50. Yep...Yep... The >>best<< system on this planet now sits in my room!!!. I was surprised to see the incredibly well desinged and literaly best looking system out there unlike... (cough,cough)... the X-Box. The graphics are awsome and the prices of the games now a day make me want to jump with joy. The games supply me with pure happiness, its incredible. Ive seen and played the PS2 and i am also surprised of what it can do, but there is only a little difference involved. Who knows what the Dreamcast's true potential really was/is but the fact is if you want a system in which has good graphics, variety of games to choose from, and will entertain you to the fullest, you should really get the Sega Dreamcast. If you were/are thinking of buying a PS2 but don't have $300, just buy a Dreamcast and a cheap DVD player. No big deal!!!. I will truly miss Sega's efforts to make a system we could all enjoy and will hope for a possible come back in the future. Untill then, here i come PS2!!!!

Summary

After the news of the Dreamcast's demise, I am left with the feeling that I have lost a very close friend. I have played for countless hours on this system, and I still think its unprecedented gameplay and graphics rival anything out there on PS2, X-Box, or Gamecube.
Although recently, it was announced that the DC may indeed be coming back early this year, I have yet to see them being restocked in stores. But all this doesn't matter, and shouldn't stop you from buying a Dreamcast, for there has never been a system that has had this great of a balance between sheer power, beauty, and graphics. Trust me, if you are going to buy a 128-bit console, this should be the one that you buy, because graphics are great, and so is gameplay, and gameplay is what matters.
The games that the Dreamcast has out right now will probably be the only ones you will see, unless the system DOES come back to life, for years to come. Let's take a look at some of the games for the DC, shall we?

Crazy Taxi: Race through the streets of a city that looks all too much like San Francisco to pick up and drop off the coolest cast of passengers you'll ever see. With a great cast of characters, solid gameplay, and vibrant, eye-melting graphics, this is the game for anyone who loved the arcade game, for this game has much more. The sequel is good, but nothing in the eyes of its father.

DOA2: Dead or Alive 2, wonderfully endowed beautiful girls bouncing and jiggling as they battle each other in what I believe to be the most realistic, and second best fighter on the Dreamcast. This installment lets you catch your enemy's moves and counter your enemy's throws, and is a wonderfully beautiful game, although disappointing in the secrets area.

Soul Caliber: The best fighting game on the Dc, period. Beautiful graphics and solid gameplay make this the most beautiful fighting game EVER!!!
DOA3 on the X-Box went blind when it stared at Soul Caliber's radiating beauty.

All Sports Games Except for Waterskiing and Baseball: The NBA2K series is the most beautiful and most fun basketball series out there, and no game on any other system can compete with these graphics. The solid gameplay and improvements make 2K2 a good choice.
The NFL2K series is a treasure, too. While not quite as pretty to look at as any Madden games on PS2, it is onbly noticeable in some areas. This series more than makes up for this in its Madden killing gameplay and commentary, thank God for Sega Sports.
The same thing for NBA2K2 goes for the NHL and Tennis games, too, but not for World Series Baseball, whose many flaws have deemed it unworthy of a 2K2 title.

All Resident Evil games, especially Code:Veronica:
Enough said, this series looks better than on any system right now. These games need no introduction.

Sonic adventure and House of the Dead:
We all know that these games are great. The true love of DC owners everywhere. The graphics are better than most games on the Gamecube right now, and the gameply is fast and furious in both of the SA's and HOTD2

Shenmue: The most realistic go anywhere, do anything game ever. The stunning garaphica and huge cast of characters make this the most realistic game ever made. You have to go to the store and even get a job later on in the game. As all of the other games mentioned here, a must have for DC owners anywhere.

Seaman: Interact and TALK to a virtual fish that you raise from birth. It may not sound fun, but it is. I love it. Seaman is the funniest game you will ever play.

The three role-playing games that the system is known for are Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, and Phantasy Star Online. While the former two have better gameplay and storylines than any FF game out there, PSO sacrificed storyline for online play, which is incredibly great. Oh yeah, and between all of these games graphics, and Grandia 2's spell effects, FFXI better be very good if it wants to reclaim its tiltle as a good RPG.

Quake III: Arena, and Unreal Tournament: You can't have one without the other, they're great for online play, multiplayer, and single player. Both work great with a controller and both kill the PC versions. Quake 3 has better graphics while Unreal Tournament has better gameplay.

Soldier of Fortune: The goriest game ever, not for kids or the squeemish. 26 hit zones on eack enemy and realistic hit detail often leaves enemies on the ground squirming and screaming with thier guts in a pile on top of them or beside them. Great gameplay and graphics, but look out for the one-to-two minute laoding times for each stage.

These are a small sample of what the DC has to offer so buy one for $50 and see which games you like.

Sound

Perfect, with the best sound capabiliteis on any system so far, the DC can hold 64 sound at once! It also supports surround sound, and it sounds as good as a stereo when you play a CD on it. Sound on this system rocks, and even the all powerful X-box hasn't beaten it in this category yet.

Gameplay

The DC is a great console for gameplay. Its controller rivals anything I've ever seen on any console, even murdering the PS controllers in comfort. I don't say these things to try to save a dying system, these words are truth. The VMU was the best idea ever, but I fear we may never see another one on any systems again.
Gameplay is where games shine, not graphics, and all DC games seem as though they were carefully inspected before being released. If you are one of those people who prefer graphics over gameplay, that's fine, but you won't be disappointed with the DC in that area either.
The above is a list of my favorite DC games, more than any good games on anything but the PS1, and possibly just a little more, but no less.

Summary

Whats left for the Dreamcast system? I can tell you its still kicking, and if you havent grabbed one yet, you missed out, unless you get lucky and sega produces some more in Feb/March. I hope my review helps you out, Ill tell you why I think the Dreamcast is not only the best buy now, but the best console purchase youll ever make.
Here are the top eight reasons to purchase a Dreamcast, starting at number 8.

8)Accessories.
Lots of cool toys for the Dreamcast, yet some will be hard to find now.
There is different light guns, problem is that I think there is only 4 games to use the gun with. The Jumpack works great, even the second party hardware, and they are cheap, about $15 dollars, about $8 in the USA.
Quite a few Dreamcast games are 4 player, the 4 slots needed for them are already built in the system.
The fishing rod is great fun, once again I think there is only 4 games to use it with though.
The dance pad is rare, but you might find it, theres a few fun dance games to play.
The VGA adapter is a must have for graphic fans that want to play the Dreamcast on thier computer monitor, if you think the graphics are good on your TV, just wait untill you see them with graphic enhancers just as the GE-force card.
VMU unit is the best one ever made, it can hold mini games to play and looks like a mini gameboy. The sceen on the VMU unit also has a dislplay while playing games, good idea for games like football when you dont want your friend to know what play you are choosing. The VMU unit is about $18 or about $8 in the USA.
The keyboard and mouse are nice to have if you plan to use your Dreamcast for internet surfing, or you are used to playing games on your computer.

7)Third party software and Emulation.
Lots of emulators for Dreamcast were popping up a year ago, I only found two of them to work perfect, rest were ok, they either had no sound, or just ran slow. The two that work well are NesterDC and SMEG. NesterDC runs Nintendo Entertainment System Roms, SMEG runs the Sega Master System roms. You can get about 300 to 600 roms on the disk with the emulator, they run great, sound great and have an easy to use interface. This is a great thing to have if you an old school gamer. There is also quite a few old arcade machines ported over for Dreamcast, youll find them for download all over the internet. The Neo Geo emulator, Super Nintendo and Genesis emulator are still in the works, and experiance problems like the ones I just listed.
Bleemcast, yes you can play playstation games on your dreamcast, but only three. Bleem got shut down so grab the Bleemcast disks while you can. Graphics are greatly improved on the Dreamcast, problem is you need a deginated VMU for the PSX games, but its still worth it. The three games are Gran Turismo 2, Metal Gear Solid and Tenken.

6)Internet Browser & Online Play.
I'm on a cable connection, the Dreamcast needs a dialup internet account in order to use the internet. Ive never tried sega.net so I used one of those free local internet providers. The Dreamcast was quite fast for a 56k modem that didnt have the pages pre-cached. The only downside is that the browser does not like Flash. It was designed for Flash 2.0, and the standard is now 5.0 It takes forever to load even a small .swf file.
Hey, you can play games online with you friends to if you can all get internet accounts! Or if you rich, just go to sega.net and pay for thier services. Depending on where you live, you may be able to get it.
I found that surfing the internet was easier with the controller than I thought, might be a bit hard in the chat rooms without a keyboard though.

5)Dolby Surround sound and a CD player.
You can play your cd's, cant say much for the screen saver, but still a nice option.
Sound on the dreamcast hooked up to a surround sound system is just awsome!

4)Downloading and burning games.
The Dreamcast game trading and downloading scene isnt as hot as it once was, but its still alive. Groups such as Echelon and Holligans rip dreamcast games, equip them with a boot file, rar pack them then release them free to the world. Dreamcast owners can download these games from ftp servers, and some other various ways. Games are then burned with Padus Diskjuggler (in most cases) once the game is downloaded and unpacked. Most games are about 200 MB to 800 MB in size, if you dont have a decent internet connection, at least cable or faster, then this isnt an option for you.
Another way is game trades, Ill warn you now, dont purchase backups from Warez sites! You wont get the games. Groups such as Echelon released these games for free so everyone could enjoy them, dont support people who try to sell somthing they were given.
As Dreamcast gameshelves become empty, and they already are, this may be the only option left to get games from this system. You can burn store bought copies of the games, they are GD-roms. You can however, make copies of the downloaded ripped versions of the Dreamcast games.
A warning about burned games, somtimes when they are ripped the files are put into alphabetical order, this isnt the order that the original copy had, your dreamcast will take longer to find the files it needs to load. This means more wear and tear on your system, and longer load times.

3)Cheap games from a massive Library.
Dreamcast has somwhere near 300 games released in Canada/USA, and more in Europe, and who knows how many if you count the Japanese imports. Videogamereview.com only has about half of the releases on this site, I hope they put them all *hint*hint* Games now sell for about $15 to $30 dollars new, and about $3 to $10 used. I purchased most of my used games from giant movie/game rental stores when the liquidated them from the shelves to make room for the new systems. Game type selection is average, check down below under gameplay, Ill explain what type of gamer will enjoy this system. Most of the games you purchase will be money well spent, youll enjoy them, and spend hours playing them. There isnt very many bad games for this system, check out the reviews here on this site before you buy.

2)Graphics as compared to the other new systems.
The new systems only have thier first gen. game titles out, you wont notice a major difference between the Dreamcast graphics as compared to the Xbox. Yes, the Xbox will have a better frame rate, but the only people that will notice any difference at all are hardcore game junkies, or graphic artists, even then, its barely noticable. This will change as the Xbox along with the other new systems realize and use the potential of thier machines for graphic processing, but as for now, trust me, you wont see a difference.
If you compare the prices and graphics of the two older consoles, the Playstation one and the Nintendo 64. Dreamcast blows those two systems out of the water!! The PSOne retails for about $130, the N64 about $120. PSOne has a great game selection and it is a good game system, the N64 is the biggest piece of junk ever made and has no where near the size of game library as the Dreamcast.

1)The price as difference compared to other systems.
This is the big difference, the Dreamcast in my country went for about $70, about $50 in the U.S The Gamecube is going for about $300, PS2 is $450, and the Xbox is $650. The Dreamcast system alone is cheaper than purchasing just one game for one of those three systems, so why not buy one for this reason alone?

I hope your finding this usefull, and I havent lost you yet in my review.

Sound

Recommending more games by type.
First Person: Quake 3, Unreal Tournament.

Sim:Iron Aces, Aerowings 2, Railroad Tycoon.

Fishing: Marine Fishing, Reel fishing wild, Sega Bass fishing 1 and 2.

3rd Person: MDK2, Virtual ON, Heavy Metal Geomatrix, Alien Front Online.

Childrens: Kao Kangaroo, Pen Pen Tri. 102 Dalmations.

RPG:Armada, Grandia 2, Silver, Skies of Arcadia, EGG, Draconus, Phantasy Star, Record of Lodoss War.

Light Gun Shooters:House of the Dead 2, Conf Mission, Death Crimson.

Dance: Space Channel 5.

Strategy:Conflict Zone

LAST WORD
Go get a Dreamcast unless your filthy rich and you can buy a huge library of expensive games on a rip of system like the Xbox.

Gameplay

What time of gamers would I suggest this game to, and who I wouldent suggest it to.

Fighting game fans, racing game fans sports fans, arcade game fans and adventure game fans will love this system. The Library is packed with these types of games.

Childrens games, first person shooters, third person shooters 2d shooters light gun shooters, dance club puzzle gamers and sim style gamers will find this systems library ok, but the selection isnt as great as the above.

Strategy and Role Playing gamers may be dissapointed with the Dreamcast Library, there is only a few games you can get of those types.

Summary

I'm 30 years old, and have NEVER owned a SEGA machine in my life up to this point. I was mad at how they always seemed to bash Nintendo, and how they always seemed to sell out their own customers for a quick buck (32x???). Flash forward and I'm STILL hating SEGA because now theyre trying to mess with my beloved PS1... I hated the Dreamcast (stupid name!) and waited for it to fold so I could get my PS2 and laugh. Flash forward again, and I buy a PS2 on launch day... 3 months later, the games still suck and I feel like I've been ripped off. Yes, now we're getting great PS2 games, but back then it was a vast wasteland...

so I'm in Software Etc. one day and decide to buy a used DC because the games are so cheap & there is a large, well reviewed library waiting for me.
To cut a long story short, I've never regretted buying my DC for a second. Stores are liquidating games left and right, used stores charge usually less than $15 (and some less than $10) for first class games like Shenmue, Sonic, House of the Dead 2, Soul Caliber, Space Channel 5, Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, etc etc etc. Its scary... but you can buy an entire DC system NEW + Crazy Taxi for only $5 more than buying the PS2 or GameCude versions! How can you not give this system a try?

Bottom line-- I've played my DC this year more than my PS1 and PS2 combined.

one other note: If you want the ability to use back-up images of DC games or the Bleem! software to play GT2 or MGS or any non GD-Rom type disc, you're going to need to find a unit made before October 2000. Most of the new systems on sale now have been "upgraded" and won't allow these to be used anymore.

Sound

I dont really know all that much about the number of channels or all that stuff, but the sound is certainly good, or at least good enough to produce some excellent music during gameplay. I have no complaints.

Gameplay

Gameplay is usually very tight-- if theres one thing Sega knows, its arcade style twitch gaming. All of their first party games are great, for the most part. I was at first really annoyed by their weird controller, but i've gotten used to it... another solution is to buy one of the MadCatz pads, which work just as well and offer a controller for people with bigger hands.

I'm not a big online gamer, but one of the benefits definitely IS playing games online right out of the box... you might not find many people out there playing Chu Chu Rocket on a given night, but the Quake 3 servers always seemed to be filled. Like I said, I don't use it that much, but its good to have the option. If Sony and Microsoft are only going to support broadband gaming when they ever roll out their online plans, then I'm afraid they'll have to do it without me.

Sound

Like most people say, the Gamecube and Dreamcast both have very good sound, 64 channels, and PS2 with 48, X Box beats them both though with 5.1. But I myself could care less, as long as there is good, clean music and not that gritty cartridge sound that the more recently N64 had.

Gameplay

Off the top of my head there are probably about 30 to 40 superior games that were released on Dreamcast, some of them coming from SEGA themselves. In the Sports category their games were superior to the competition, screw EA, I'm glad they didn't like SEGA's system b/c SEGA's in house team kicked their asses! The gameplay on all of their games was also unbeatable. The controller was great, the VMU was a cool idea although my batterries ran down too quick for me, and the best part of it was that you could jump on line and play someone else on a lot of different games. I know I can say my roommate and I played many hours into the morning of NFL 2K1 and I can't even express my love for internet play, it is excellent!
