Summary

I was just looking around this site and decided to read the reviews on the Dreamcast. Some of these people don't know what they are talking about. THE SEGA DREAMCAST IS THE BEST SYSTEM ON THE MARKET. True, there are not many games out yet, but the few that are out include some very good ones. NFL 2K is amazing. Soul Calibur is amazing. Sonic is overrated. Ready to Rumble is excellent. I also rented one of the flight sim games, and while not very realistic, it was a very fun game to play. Plus, the number of games for the system is going to double or triple by the end of the year, and some of the titles look extremely well worth the money.

Now, don"t get me wrong. The Dreamcast does have it"s faults....it could use a faster modem, it does need more games, it would be nice to be able to play online right now, and a dvd player would be sweet. I already own a dvd player, and personally, appreciate the reduced cost for not having it in there. I like the idea of having it as an add-on. Those who need it can get it, those who don"t, get to save some money.

For $200, or cheaper on the internet, you can't get a better system. A computer with the same power would cost at least $1500. Sony's and Nintendo's current offerings don't even compare. And for all the people saying that the Playstation 2 is better.....its not out yet, so you cannot possibly know this. When the time comes, I will more than likely go out and buy the Playstation 2 and the Nintendo Dolphin. However, we won't see those guys for at least six months....probably a year, and by that time Sega will have a very strong foothold. The Dreamcast has sold 750,000 consoles in the U.S. alone, and that is more than anybody has ever done with a new system release. Game developers are noticing, and we gamers will benefit greatly in the next few months.

Once again, nothing can touch the Dreamcast. If you can afford it, buy it. If you can only afford to own one of the new systems, then wait until they are all out, and buy the one that suits you the most. Don't think that just because Sony did so well with the original Playstation, that they will stay on top with the Playstation 2. This industry is very consumer driven, and right now, its anybody's game (no pun intended).

Sound

Look you can play you music cds on it that has to count for something. All the time put in to the system you would think that they would put the best sound system in it that they could.

This has nothing to do with the sound but to all the people that gave the dreamcast a bad reviews I strongly urge you to give up you hate and give the dreamcast the review it really deserves.

Gameplay

The game play is the best for almost all the games. How can you say that any of the game for the dreamcast are bad because the good people at dreamcast have had so long to work on ever issue with the games these game have been tested so much. If you say that the games or the system is a bad one them you must have some personal issues with sega mabye it because you have been burt by sega before and your not giving sega a real chance.

Summary

Excellent system. Although it is in its early stages, the Dreamcast has a lot of potential. Overall it has great graphics and has a fast processor. The controller sucks, it really makes my wrist hurt after a while.

As to whether it will be as good as the ps2, who knows? There is a lot of hype surrounding it, but how many of us have actually played the PS2 to really be able to boast that it is better? The Dreamcast is a great system and I would recommend it to anyone. I bought a Dreamcast and I am also going to buy a Playstation 2 console as well (when the price comes down from $400). Even though the PS2 will be more powerful, that doesn't mean that the Dreamcast isn't an excellent system. The Nintendo 64 is more powerful than the Playstation, but who has better games? Furthermore, I don't pledge allegiance to any company, they aren't paying me any money to endorse their product. Just because I own system doesn't mean I can't save up and buy another.

Sound

Great sound. Of course it varies from game to, but the Dreamcast has an excellent sound card. Just as good as any other systems out there. What would you expect from a CD based system. My only complaint about the Dreamcast in this area is when you want to play a music CD. There aren't enough CD player controls on it. It just has backwards search, forward search, play, stop, pause, and repeat(even though their is no way to program the CD as to which songs you want to loop). You can't fast forward to another part of the same song, you can only move to the next. That is my only complaint, but really, if you to listen to music, why would you not use your stereo anyway. The Dreamcast is meant to play games.

Gameplay

Honestly, gameplay doesn't really apply to a console itself. It only applies to the games. Their are some excellent games out their for the Dreamcast. Soul Calibur, NFL 2K, NBA 2K, NBA showtime, Sega Rally 2, and Ready 2 Rumble just to name a few. These all, in my opinion, deserve 5 stars. But their are some crappy games or games that had a lot of potential but just didn't cut it because they were rushed... Slave Zero. That is to be expected. When people talk about the Dreamcast, they automatically make reference the PS2. Don't expect every game to be the greatest game of all time. After all, not every game on the Playstation is exactly what I would call great game..monster rancher. The playstation has been out for about 4 years now and they have a large library of games. Only about 20% of all the games are great games. Don't forget guys, the Dreamcast just came out in September and this is only November. There are gonna be some killer games, just give it a chance. The people who hate Sega are always gonna hate Sega and give harsh reviews. I am being as unbiased as possible. Hey when the PS2 comes out, you better believe I will be in line for one, but I will probably pick up a few games for my Dreamcast as well.

Sound

The big jump in sound seemed to occur from the switch in media format from cartridge to CD-Rom. Dreamcast games feature great sound, but so do most PSX games. Not as much of a difference in this category, but no complaints here.

Gameplay

Sonic is the most amazing platformer I have ever seen or played. Furiously fast, smooth animation and some mindbending levels like the Casino Stage, which I am convinced was programmed by someone on LSD. I'm not a big 3d-fighting fan, but Soul Calibur is the most beautiful game I've ever seen. Backgrounds are incredibly clear and detailed, and the game itself is deep. Great gameplay, and probably the best game ever to impress your friends with. NBA2k and NFL2k are my favorite two titles. I'm a big sports game fan, and Sega has always been on top of this genre ever since the Genesis. Anyways to make a long story short, the graphics and gameplay in NBA2k & NFL2k are so far ahead of anything ever released on any other system, including the PC, that you won't be able to go back to anything else.

Summary

For all you Playstation 2 Fanatics out there, keep in mind of this, the only reason why everyone cracks on a Dreamcast is because of the Saturn, but.... the reason why PSX and N64 blew it away, is because they were more technologically advanced. PSX2 and Dolphin are actually no more graphical or faster in any way than the Dreamcast. Also not the fact that by the time PSX2 and for that matter Dolphin come out, Dreamcast will have about 150 games, it already has 52 titles and only about 10 of those are not that great, (thats damn good odds) by the time PSX2 comes out it will have about 150. Think of it. Dreamcast kicks ass. Sega has most unique games and Best third party support, plus they got Quake III, Halflife, and other CPU ports of the games coming, and NAMCO has signed on officially as well. Plus a entire army of other third party support. Just wait till Resident Evil: CODE VERONICA comes out. Its gonna whip the hell out of your little 32bit RE3 for playstation. Look at sports, NFL2k, NBA2k, NBA Showtime, NBA LIVE 2000, NFL Blitz, NHL2k, they all rock.

Summary

This system is good pakage overall. The price is good for release at $200 as compared to $300 when the PSX was first released. The number of games for release is also good, Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Hydro Thunder, NFL 2K, Tokyo Extreme Racer, Monaco Grand Prix. Compared to the hype that the PSX stirred up on it"s release, the DC system didn"t have as much, yet still managed to do better as far as sales are concerned. Like many, I give this system four stars, because there will always be something better. However, more powerful does not mean better, N64 for example, more powerful, but wrong target audience. Time will tell, but for now, and the next year to come, I can rest assured that I will have the best system available, while the rest of the world waits on promises from the Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft.

Sound

CD quality. Hooked it up to my home theatre, and I'm in gaming bliss. Nice to hear your competitors on your left or right side behind you.

Gameplay

Two words, Soul Calibur. How much more game play do you need? I like the fact that the characters are all so diverse and take differing amounts of damage. If a fast character takes off the same damage as everyone else, who do you think is gonna win? The guard impact, and repel systems also add depth to the game. Let's not forget about the attack cancels. As for the other games I have owned, Tokyo Extreme Racer falls below my expectations, but then again, it was not intended as a pure racing game. Sega Rally on the other hand is pretty good and chanllenging. What about the unique HydroThunder? First of it's kind as far as I know. Wanna talk realism? Play Monaco Grand Prix. I can go on, but i don't have any more room, buy the system, buy the games and judge for yourself.

Summary

best machine for this time and thats for sure .played almost 4 years on my greystation and realy
wanted to get something new , when I saw House of the Dead 2 I was completly shocked , this machine is capable of doing 100% ports over from the Arcade so I bought a brandnew Dreamcast , the loading time is so fast you won`t even notice that you were playing a cd game , the graphics are so real that I realy feel sad when I shot that little fellow who was screaming for help , that tells me enough : this is the system for now !! and only for $200 Dollars , whith great games coming in the the future this is a real stayer for a long period.
sorry but the Playstation has got his time , now its time for SEGA.
stop telling with : the Playstation has more then
1000 games this system is already 4 years old and if you will only pick out the
real good titles there will be only a couple of games left who are realy worth buying , and that counts for every system thats available , I had a lot of fun with Mario ,Zelda and the Tekken serie`s so every system has there ups and downs .

one more word to Phillipe from Belgium : how can you tell by saying : you will forget the Dreamcast if you will see the Playstation 2 at work , did you see it working ?,
well your from Belgium that tells me enough ....

Summary

With a recent string of failures in the home console market, Sega has pinned its hopes on a little white box called Dreamcast. My fellow gamers, big things DO come is small packages; the Dreamcast has indeed put Sega back on the map, delivering presently unparalleled graphics and some truly remarkable games.

This system offers four controller ports for multi-player gaming and also offers an on-board 56k modem for World Wide Web access (with the proper Internet Service Provider), and comes packaged with one controller, an AV cable, an AC power cord, a demo disc containing such titles such Sonic Adventure and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, and a web browser disc provided by Planet Web, the same company that brought Saturn gamers their NetLink technology.

As for the games, there are several jaw-dropping titles from both first and third parties that really showcase the Dreamcast"s talents:

1) Soul Calibur: Namco"s near-flawless translation of the Soul Edge arcade (Soul Blade for PSX) machine sequel.

2) NFL 2K: Visual Concepts delivers the ultimate Sunday afternoon experience to be had anytime.

3) Sonic Adventure: Everyone"s favorite hedgehog is back and better than ever, delivering eye-popping visuals and a superb platform/adventure experience.

4) Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Imagine NFL Blitz in a boxing ring, and you have R2R, which comes complete with over-the-top combos and arcade-like graphics, making you wonder if you"ve ever seen the arcade game somewhere (you haven"t).

Summed up, the Dreamcast is the closest to the arcade that we have come so far for the home marketplace. As Sega is a major player in the arcade marketplace, don"t be too surprised to see many more arcade translations in the future. One such title that could be Sega"s next big title is Crazy Taxi, which even at its early stages looks even better than arcade-perfect.

So, why only four stars, especially with all of this heaping praise? Well, there are several factors involved. First of all, there still isn"t a large software base for the system. The flow of new Dreamcast titles has slowed to a trickle, even with the holiday season in full swing. The available titles are good for the most part, but there are some definite clunkers out there (Expendable and Incoming, to name a few) as well as some titles that seem incomplete or rushed (Hydro Thunder, NBA Showtime, King of Fighters 99).

Secondly, the Dreamcast"s online gaming potential (or capability, for that matter) has not yet been realized. Thoughts of being able to beat the pants off of someone 3000 miles away in a game of Soul Calibur are wonderful, but at this point, just imagination. Yes, the 56k modem and Planet Web"s browser software are functional, but they are nowhere near where gamers expected them to be when the system launched. The ability to download new game features onto a Visual Memory Unit (VMU) is definitely a plus, however.

Lastly, the system is still young and has room for improvement, such as better quality (and quantity) of software. Sega"s "little console that could" is definitely capable of a five-star rating, but that must be earned by meeting or exceeding the system"s potential, something that Sony"s juggernaut, the aging PlayStation, has done many times over.

Sound

Of course, utilizing a CD medium enables the Dreamcast to pump out some serious audio firepower to accompany is on-screen eye candy. Games such as NBA Showtime, NFL 2K, Soul Calibur, and Sonic Adventure really showcase the Dreamcast's sonic prowess. Try running the NFL 2K demo and then calling a family member... don't be surprised if they ask you which football game you're watching and what channel it's on.

The Dreamcast is indeed a system of potential... some of it has been realized and some has not. In order for Sega's console to keep up when PlayStation 2 is released next fall, Sega has to rectify the absence of online gaming quickly and also move to shore up some of the weaknesses in its overall Dreamcast library. Like many other gamers, I really hope that this time, Sega delivers on its promises... I believe that it just might.

Gameplay

The games available for the system cover quite a few genres, such as arcade translations, sports, and racing games; however, there are some truly gaping holes in the Dreamcast's library at this point. Role-playing games and adventure games are either non-existent or very close to it. The planning of software releases seems a bit haphazard. Games such as Castlevania: Resurrection and Resident Evil: Code Veronica should have been higher priorities, although this is not entirely Sega's fault. This problem hurts the system's overall rating nonetheless.

On the bright side, as mentioned above, some of the currently available titles are truly stellar and have driven sales and impressions of the Dreamcast unit sky-high. Killer apps like Soul Calibur and NFL 2K truly prove that the Dreamcast is for real, and future titles such as Crazy Taxi, NHL 2K, and Street Fighter Alpha 3 will improve the system's standing in this category.
